              (  former torture victim or not, Vida does't exactly appreciate it when                  people touch things that belong to her. a hand reaches out & takes                  hold of the hand that sets down the bitten apple,    applying  JUST                  enough pressure to almost snap a bone.   she doesn't do anything,                  though. it just happens to seriously hurt a person  LIKE  A  BITCH.  )

                 had she known the Agent would be there, Vida would have stopped                  what she was doing & waited until he had left. her palm fell back to                  the table she sat in, letting the apple she'd been revolving around it                   fall back down with a flick of her wrist;  &  here she'd wanted some                  peace while she ate her breakfast.

                 a smile; sickly sweet & full of malice grazes her lips. well aware that                  she would frighten the other but unaware of any reason why it would                  have been a bad idea. fingers carefully tuck a strand of electric blue                   behind her ear before Vida speaks for the first time.

                  “I— Don’t think I know you….”

                  “Great. Makes two of us. Who the heck are you?"

     [ She understands. She really does.        They both had taken advantage of        Jude. And not just himself either.        But unwavering loyalty to them both        and how he would wait for them to        come back from their Ops. Not just        that, but his pureness as well. He        had been the purest thing left in this        godforsaken world. Now he was gone.        Nothing left of him but his compass.        Even that has been tainted, ruined.        It was nothing but junk metal now. But        with it there, resting warm against the        beat of her heart, it was something more.

       It was him; watching over her, protecting        her, warming her, reminder her that she        was still alive and that she wasn’t a        machine. The dull thump, thump, thump of        her heart radiating through the mutated metal        was his soft reminder that she was allowed        to break down. She was only human after all.        She could remember the first time he had told        her that. Three months had passed since her        joining of the League and he had found her one        night, while everyone was eating dinner, sobbing        on her bunk. Of course, when she seen him,        she locked her emotions down and scolded him        for being there. He didn’t leave, even when she        asked him to. He just sat beside her, took her        hand and whispered, “You’re only human, Roo.” ]

            “It’s okay to not be okay, Vida.                    And it’s okay to be angry.                            It wasn’t fair.                               But.. but life’s not fair.”

    [ That was a hard lesson she had to learn.        But it was one of the best. There was nothing        she could do about it. Life isn’t fair. It’s cruel        and mean and it’ll tear you to pieces at times.        But there were times where it wasn’t so bad.        Like those little intimate moments she and        Liam shared in Black Betty. And the times        when Jude was able to sit the team down to        play War or Go-Fish. It’s those things that made        the hellish part of life so bearable. It was the        reason why people moved on. To see the better        parts of life. ]

"— He’s safe now.                          No one can hurt him where he is.                                 ….It’s his turn to protect us.”

      “No, no it's not.          It's not his turn to do anything because----              Because that's all he ever did. Protect us.”

                                [ She couldn't count how many times the                                  boy had opened up to her about one thing                                 or another. How many times she'd snapped                                 at him and sent him out of the room, not even                                  bothering to look up as the door shut itself                                 right in front of his face. Jude had protected                                 her in a way that no one else had. He'd taught                                 her that it was fine to be angry at the world,                                 because he'd always be on the other side of                                 that door waiting for her to act like she was                                 okay for another day. He'd never seen her cry,                                 but Vida knew that he could tell when she had                                   because he'd always always offer up some                                  especially violent story that made her laugh                                 all the same.

                                Vida could never repay Jude for his kindness.                                 when she'd needed it the most. In a way, he'd                                 been the only family she'd had in a long time.                                 He and Cate. They'd treated her like she really                                 mattered, and she'd never had the decency to .                                 return the favor when she could have. ]

           “You know what's worse?              Knowing that if only I'd turned and looked behind me...              Maybe... maybe I could have done something.”

                               [ When it came down to it, she'd only thought                                it had been a simple mistake she'd made.                                Vid had been the closest to him, she had                                the best chance of getting to him. But she                                 hadn't once considered that Jude might                                 not have been right behind her like she'd                                thought. ] 

          “I was supposed to be protecting him.”

                              [ And she'd failed. She'd failed him. ]

     ”—Green is the color of change. I find it suits me.

         “Here I thought it was just the color of puke.”

               ”Blue. The color of... something or other.”

      [ It killed her, made it hard for her to         breathe knowing that Jude’s death         was on her. His blood stained her         hands. She was Leader and she         told him to follow her. And she left         him. Now he was down there,         trapped in the dark all by himself.          Sweet, loving, innocent little Jude.         He didn’t deserve such a death as         the one he got. It was just too wrong. 

        Her fingers curl tightly around the         broken compass in the palm of         her hand, the tears brimming in         her eyes brushed away with her         free hand. She was not to cry. Not         right now. She had to focus, make         sure everyone who made it to the         surface were okay. Slipping the         chain supporting the compass         around her neck, Ruby pushed         herself off of the embankment         and started towards the first person        she had seen. Which had been Vida. ]

            “— I’m sorry.”

       [ She didn’t know why it had taken          her that long to say something.          Maybe it was because she could stop          staring at the blood in the other girl’s          hair. It sickens her because most of          the blood that they all were covered in          was the blood of children. Kids, like          them, all dead. Like Jude. Their final          moments all spent in panic and in pain.          It wasn’t fair. This wasn’t how it was          supposed to happen. No one should          have died. Especially not the children.

Her movements are slow as she goes          to sit beside Vida. Her body was still          aching from the hike through the tunnel. ]

                  “Are.. are you okay?”

                “Being sorry never did anything for anyone.”

                             [ It's easy for her to be angry at Ruby.                                 Anger is familiar to her, not the deep                                 sorrow you'd expect her to feel. It's so                                 unfair that she can't help but laugh at                                 the question she's asked. It's cold and                                 it's bitter and she can't help but think                                 about the times this laugh had been in                                 response to something Jude had said.                                 Judith. Jude. He had been so... so... him.] 

                "I knew the second they went in----"

                             [ And yet just like Ruby, she had hoped.                                Neither should have bothered, not in the                                cruel world they lived in where death was it.                                They'd been lucky, she tried to reason.                                At least it wasn't them, right? ] 

                “I'm fine. Perfect, actually.”

                             [ So fine that any second now she'd be                                sick to her damn stomach. Clancy should                                have been the one to die. He was trapped there,                                Jude should have had a chance, he had one.                                He should have lived. ]

      ❝I know—— I know she needs me.            I just don’t know how to do this right now.                 She has you. And Cole. Cate. I… can’t help.❞

                            “None of us mean anything.                              The only one who did is gone now."

      ❝Yeah, guess you’re right.             Look. I can’t——I won’t stay.                 Ruby’s… I just can’t. Okay?❞

                            “Coward. Asshole. Idiot.                               You can't just leave her now.                              Not when she needs you most.”

      ❝She’s looking for Cate.             And I’m surprised you didn’t join her.                 Actually — I came to say goodbye.❞

                            “Cate's a big girl, she'll get here herself.                               Wait. You're leaving?                                How the heck are you getting out of the city?”

                "You're blocking my light."

                             [ She's shaking, fingers                                 furiously running through                                 her hair in an attempt to                                 get rid of the dirt and                                 debris. Vida's fingers run                                 through strands clumped                                 together with blood and she                                 can't be sure if it's her own                                 ----or if it's someone else's. ] 

                "I'm not going to warn you again. Move."

                             [ For the first time, she feels                                like she can't breath. Vida                                just needs to hit someone. ] 

                "Ruby, I'm not kidding ------ move."

                ”Oh doll….” Lynn tapped Vida’s cheek with her index finger gently. “That was exactly the point.” She turned back towards the target and threw a knife that was on a table beside her, hitting just outside the center of the target.

                       ”Okay….. I’ll let you actually ask the question this time. What do you want Vida?”

         And just like that, there was a scowl on her lips. She was outspoken, and if Lynn didn't want to hear what she had to say well that was too damn bad. Vida smiled at the other with as much sweetness as the girl could allow herself to show, arms clasping behind her back as she watched the other throw the knife. Impressive, but she could have done better.

                           ”I was just wondering-- actually, I forgot. Thanks for that.”
