Project 4 Installation

Title: “I am____.”

Artist Statement:

Emotions have a way of completley consuming the body and mind. In this piece I reflected on what certain emotions meant to me and how I experienced them with my sense and not only my mind. When you think of an emotion like happiness or sadness; memories are evoked and are drawn out from hiding. I want to emphasize the fragility of our own emotions and also how fleeting they can be. The streamers hide messages that I have heard before feeling the emotions they are embodied of. Our feelings can be both transparent and ellusive. Emotion is a cycle, for to say you are happy you had to have been sad. This piece is an acceptance of emotion; encouraging the viewer to spend time with their feelings and experience them to the fullest.

Concept Statement

Title: Rain of Emotion

I will have three seperate pillars of streamers suspended from the ceiling that will represent three different emotions, anger, sadness and happiness. Red colors represent anger, blue and violet tones represent sadness and yellow and oranges will represent happiness. I will also use essential oils like lavender and cirtus oil onto the streamers to evoke the sense of smell. The smell will be associated with the emotion. The streamers will be dense and I will encourage people to walk through them and “experience” each emotion.

Reading 5

Nostalgia associated with smell is a powerful thing. Tolaas’s work seems like a form of performance art applied to a sort of installation art. Her nose is the instrument and based on the scents she can discover she attempts to recreate them. While her art is not visual it reveals “the smells of a city or your neighbor provides stories and background that can’t necessarily be seen.” If visuals are absent can something still be called “art”?

Project 3 Performance Art

Can Knot is a physical representation of the attempt to solve a tangled mess of problems. One must be within the right head space and mindset to even begin untangling a mess. As I progressed with this piece I found myself tense and apprehensive at the task set in front of me. Frustration built up but this was diffused as the cords began to break free of one another. Our own personal struggles may seem daunting and impossibly long but patience and perseverance will always lead you towards a solution.

Exercise 3 Yoko Ono

The buildup of courage before executing these performances was the most daunting for me. However as I progressed through the three exercises I realized that no one outwardly questioned my actions. Some people walked past me without a care while more noticeably people that were stagnant and with seemingly nothing to do looked at me curiously. Although I was nervous about this exercise there was something enjoyable about performing in a public space. I chose to execute my exercise withing a crowded shopping mall which allowed for both space and a large audience. I do think that it will take some more warming up to being more comfortable publicly before I can do so again.

Reading 3

Performance art is a medium that is universally interpreted not only by the artist but by the audience as well. A performance has endless possibilities in terms of how it is presented, perceived and receipted by the artist and the public. The following quote resonated this idea to me the most:  “ Each performer makes his or her own definition of performance in the very manner and process of execution, so that each work becomes an entirely unexpected combination of events.” The unexpected nature of performance art and how abrupt it can be can sometimes be interpreted positively but negatively as well. Is a rise for emotion a contributing factor to the “success” of performance art?

Reading 2

Is time always easily indicated within a piece of art or is it based on the viewers interperation? Time withinn art is an element that is always existant whether intended or as simple as a snapshot. The subject matter and connect all existed at a certain point in time and fall into the time category regardless. However, how literal or vauge the message is relayed to the viewer is up to interpretation and the artists intention as well. In this sense “artists decide whether to make their work a narritve” through the use of time

PROJECT 1: JUXTAPOSING TWO MOMENTS IN TIME

“Connected Fate” I wanted to combine two emotional events in my life, one being very sad and the other being happy and something that has brought me joy. Recently I have had to let go of my childhood dog who has been with me for 13 years. I was deeply saddened by this event and it made me reflect on the happy years I’d spent with her despite my grief. In contrast, this past year I was able to open up my world by finding a new group of friends and a reason to be more social. My circle of friends began a campaign group which meets weekly in order to progress and gave us opportunities to come together. Fate plays a big role in the game, not knowing what will come next and imagining the many possible outcomes. The yarn represents not only the never-ending possibilities but also the guiding red string of fate that will always connect and guide me back to my beloved dog.

“Different Views” I chose to juxtapose the ongoing struggles of separated families along the US Mexico border and the ease of American tourism and currency exchange in Mexico. Thousands of children have been separated from their parents along the border, yet thousands of American tourists travel to Mexico without care and empathy for these struggles. Due to the controversy surrounding the US Mexico border and the changes in presidency in the US, the Mexican peso is steadily declining in value and worth. Personally, I work at a foreign currency exchange and send off American tourists with pockets full of pesos to their dream vacation. While children peer over the wall with hopes of returning to their parents, tourists look past it all and only focus on their enjoyment. My main goal was to point out the irony of tourism in Mexico and lack of respect overall towards natives who are presently suffering.

Project 1 Concept Statement

For my first collage, I have chosen to juxtapose the passing of my childhood dog, Sugar, and when I began participating in roleplay gaming with friends at the start of 2018. I want to juxtapose these two events because one is very sad and still heartbreaking but the other allowed me to be more social and gave me a chance to make my friend group bigger. I have always been more reserved so being able to gather with friends just to have fun is something that makes me very happy. It gave me something to look forward to every week. My dog Sugar’s existence in my life was always something I was so grateful for and I cherished her but we discovered she had cancer in October 2018. I want to take these two contrasting emotions of happiness and sadness in my life to deepen their significance in my life and how they have shaped me as a person.  My second collage will focus on the event in my life of staring a new job at a foreign currency exchange and the ongoing hardships of border control. I want to express the irony of Americans vacationing in Mexico and easily trading out their money in order to visit and cross the border while many immigrants struggle and remain separated from their families.

Without Mickey in each photo the focus shifts to the people surrounding him. The attention is aimed at the empty space where Mickey once was . Since the majority of the backgrounds with Mickey take place in similar locations it emphasizes how important his presence is in each picture. The visual context of the location, that being Disneyland support Mickey alot. Many of the people and children shown are posing with cheery expressions that help indicate to the viewer that they are happy beside a beloved character. I do believe that this is stronger as a series because Mickey is seen with many types of people in different situations however the main location is still clear to the viewer. I was glad to find an older souvenir photo in black of white of the same setup, Mickey smiling next to a companion.

Re: The Function of the Studio

As someone who stands on the line between having both a traditional studio and digital studio, understanding the initial divide between these two worlds was insightful. I think that as an artist creating the sort of environment and space where you can be creative is difficult. Eventhough we may believe that we are the ones who understand ourselves the most, that is not always the case. Developments in technology have made it easier to create art in digital forms and to also present in digital forms to millions of other people. With the mention of the the “under construction” banners and how they “informed users that there was somebody who was always taking care of the site”, resonated with me a sort of “common sense of the internet.” Any website or blog or social media account that I see today have so many “under construction” signs that aren’t blatantly pointed out in gif form. These aspects of your very own digital studio are cared for not only by the artist but by the viewer and those who experience it as well. Do you think that it's possible for a digital studio and a traditional studio to coexist and improve one another?
