I just rewatched Gamer since Gamer 2.0 is coming out and I don't get why people (Tikki) scolded Marinette for trying out? She was the best player by far, Max lost fair and square (but it kind of looked like he was cheating with the combos showing up on his glasses). idk man that entire episode was a little sketch but at least it established Marinette's dominance at video games.

The whole thing reeked of entitled gamer guy despite everyone praising it for not being so. Like, Adrien did just as much as Marinette to get him disqualified for the tournament (if anything it’d be more annoying since he only beat Max by one point) but Adrien doesn’t get any crap for that. It’s the misogyny :/

A reason I could see is that even when Adrien beat him, he could at least still play. Other than the fact that Marinette is a girl, she also came in at the last minute when Max was all but sure he would get to compete. Adrien might have taken the top spot from Max, but it was Marinette who bumped him out of the running altogether. It’s fully possible that if their positions were switched and it had been Adrien who came in last minute and cost Max the chance altogether, that Max would have focused on him instead. Emotions aren’t reasonable—in fact, they rarely are. What they are is reactionary and generally responding to immediacy. It’s fully possible that instead of targeting Marinette because she’s a girl, she could have been targeted because she was the more immediate focus of the feelings simply based on the circumstances of her being the final one to cost Max his goal.

That said, the defense that Marinette was in the wrong for booting him out of his place when he really really wanted to play is not justified. It’s understandable that he was upset. It’s even understandable that he would hold resentment that he was booted from competing at the last minute by someone who previously hadn’t been involved or indicated a desire to be. But there seems to be an expectation that Marinette shouldn’t have tried to compete solely based on Max’s desire despite the fact that there is no way that Marinette could have known about this prior to her attempt.

All she had gotten prior to her attempt to compete was a vague comment from Kim about how long Max had been practicing—which was a testament to his effort but not his desire or feelings. The only thing anyone else got onto her about was the importance of the competition and her not interfering just to play with Adrien—which was something she really really wanted as well, even if it wasn’t necessarily considered as “noble” of a cause for all that it would have still accomplished the same goal in the end. The fact is that nobody knew how good Marinette was at the game and if they had, they likely would have encouraged her to compete since they’d know she could win the competition for the school. Max’s feelings didn’t really come into account by anyone until Marinette won and was made to feel bad for it afterwards—again despite her not having known.
