Tumblr Reflection

Where to start... Honestly I thought this class was going to be just like the first part of RWS, in the first post that we had to do for this class i said that i was thinking that this class would be a little harder than the first one and sure it was harder because we only meet once a week and i think that makes every class harder. i think that since we had to use mixed media for our tumblr posts (gifs, pictures) helped us to better explain ourselves and what we were thinking at that point, before this class i knew that for example in presentations you could use pictures or videos but in this class i learned that they really really help the author to express a message and it also helps the audience.

the second one comes from week 7, I really liked this one because since i was a kid i liked to summarize, i always liked to get a highlighter and to get the most important stuff about a reading, the chapters that we read also helped us with the lit review.

this is the 3 post that i think is one of the bests i had this semester and is about week 12, it talks about multi modalities and how authors use the different types of graphs and videos and pictures to get a message across

My experience using tumblr, Im going to be honest, at the beginning i thought it was going to be super hard to understand it but we had like a mini class and i felt like i learned a lot about it and it really helped me to understand how to use it. I would prefer using tumblr for reading responses because we can use gifs or pictures and in blackboard you cant, thats why i think tumblr is more beneficial than blackboard. I dont know if you can do it on blackboard but i like how in tumblr you can see what your classmates think and you can respond to what they are saying and thats what i like about tumblr too. 

i wouldnt change anything about the tumblr experience honestly, i really enjoyed it after using it for a while

week 13 Reading Response

For this week we read about Developing Multimodal Academic Literacies among college freshman by Gloria Jacobs. She focuses on showing how teaching multimodal academic literacies help students from college, she also talks about Jacobs experiment and and the experiment was about  a freshman english class where they tested the multimodal literacies. Overall this text shows how getting together multimodal academic literacies help students to better understand what they are doing in class. 

I feel this reading connects to my major because in the business world a business man have to use different types of resources to get his or her message to get a business going. Sometimes you have to present videos or podcasts or maybe sometimes use a poster to inform, those are visual forms but business persons also use memos or text to inform about a business or something they have to do.

This reading also will help me and my partner for the AVA project because we will need to use different types of modalities to present the information about obesity. this is because we will need to use a video and inside of it we will be using text too.

Week 12:Reading Response

Chapter 10 focuses on different methods to organize an argument. This is important because the way that the message is transmitted can have a bigger impact than the message itself.In Yancey the author focuses on technology and the major role that it played in the 19th century with the printing press and today in chat rooms.

Yancey enhances this weeks reading by emphasizing hoe technology has made writing easier. She focuses on ways to make someones writing better. For example she tries to urge teachers to adapt to the new technology. To be able to make sure that their audience is able to understand.

She compares literacy and rhetoric as cannons. Where they are placed on a shelf, once you take one another one arises. This means that there will always be new ways to deliver a message as long as more people are educated.

The readings have changed my perception of literacy for the better. It helped me see new perspectives of it that I never knew.

The chapter and the article expressed many different ways of making your case. It focused on how we should use the technology at our disposal to the best of our abilities.

Week 12

When shaping an argument, it is vital that a writer uses formats and modalities. The modalities that one can use include verbal, written, and visual. Depending on audience and purpose, one modality might be more effective than another in getting a point across. Formats are used to help a writer develop their argument  through a document, letter, research poster, etc,. Formats are important in arguments because it will help structure your topic more wholly.

Much like in Chapter 10, Yancys article discusses how arguments, rhetoric, literacy, and structure are all hand in hand. Because literature is a broad subject, rhetoric exists within it. When reading something and analyzing it,there are both rhetoric and literature components. Yancys arguments further the notion that there are types of rhetoric that come within a literacy. She basically breaks down the types of composition and goes in depth for each one so the reader has a better understanding.

I did personally grow in my understanding of literacy and rhetoric. There is a lot that goes into writing reading, and there is a whole mental process behind choosing a medium, and analyzing a document so that it is structure properly and more effective. These readings showed how important it is to choose a media, and how vital it is to format it correctly.

This weeks readings impacted my understanding of multiliteracies/ literacies positively. Yancy used examples to show the reader how diverse literature really is. In chapter 10, the topic of modalities/ formats introduced me to solid understanding of why an argument needs to revolve around certain things. Because of technology, society, and other things, media is changing and so is literature, but the core principles of rhetoric and literacy remain the same.

I totaly agree that one modality might be more effective than others when trying to explain or persuade someone, i also afree that these readings help us to choose a media and what we want to say. i also agree that even though everything is changing, the principles are going to be the same, Good Job!

Week 12 reading response

this chapter talks about Fromats and Modalities, it talks about visual arguments and the different ways you can share an argument with the audience the author want target so they can change something, these authors may use different types of graphs, charts and key visuals to help him or herself. 

The Gif representss me and my team after the AVA presenation, I used this gif because talking to people infront of a classroom is hard for me. 

There are many ways to share your information to the people you are targeting, it could be popular scholarship, scholarly, visual argument. each one of them is different. for example, the popular scholarship are written, the visual argument are clearly visual, this is when the author uses images or animations to exaplain or tell you what they want, they may also use charts, graphs or other infographics.  each type of way of transmiting the message is different from the others because is each is for different purposes. 

This chapter connects to my major because in business we will have to read a lot of things in regarding to each business we do or create or sometimes we will have to create presentations to persuade people to create a business or to sell a product. it will also help me witht the group presentation because it gives you an idea of what you want to say or what can help you to create a better presentation so we can persuade the targeted audience.

reading response week 11

For this week reading response we read about chapter 8 and 9 from Writing in Transit, the main topic of the chapters is framing and constructing arguments. in chapter 8 the author states that an agument “is the position a writer takes in a particular writing project”. the purposes of an argument are different from each other, it depends of disciplinary context, writer, and the writing occasion.  

this chapters connects to my major because in business you have to take side and make an argument if you want a contract or you want any type of new business so you can persuade the people who are going to buy or if you are selling something, it is all about an argument and how well you pitch it and how well you persuade people

 I feel that this chapters connect with the advanced visual argument because creating an agrument is a way to persuade for something good or bad, in our case is to persuade people to change and think how to prevent obesity.

Advanced Visual Argument Proposal

For this project I am focusing still in the Business world, I am still undecided if I am going to use a video or a research poster but Im pretty sure is going to be one of those two. I have been doing all my projects about the business world and entrepreneurs during this semester so by now i have more information about the topic and I feel more confident talking about entrepreneurs.

issue/ problem: people are scared to start a new business because it takes a lot of courage to quit something you are doing to start someting brand new

purpose: the purpose of the Advanced Visual Argument is to inform the audience of what the problem is and how we can improve peoples minds and try to make them follow their dreams of do what they really want 

audience: all the people who are not happy in their current job or people who are happy but they want to do something else. more likely people around 20 - 35 trying to do what they really like

solution: the solution for this problem which is that people are scared to do what they want is trying to make them realize that yes, starting from the bottom is hard but if they can manage to run a business it will be worth it because they could be doing something they really like and be happy all the time. it doesnt matter if they want to have a trash recolector company, what they want is to be the best trash recolector company or whatever business it is, what they sould want is to be the best of the best 

this giff represents what i dont like about society and what i want to show for my AVA, I want to change people’s mind and stop this routine and try to convince people that they need to do something different from other people

W8 Reading Response

For this week Reading Response we read chapter 11 which is called “choosing and integrating evidence”. the whole chapter talks about evidence and how important is evidence when you are the writer. it gives a little background about paraphrasing and how it helps sometimes the writer when writing a paper when he or she doesn't want to use quotations he or she just rephrase the words with his/her own words. it also talks about visual evidence and how writers use it because they can use images, illustrations, tables, etc just to help the reader understand better. 

The author talks a lot about personal evidence and how scholars and writers don't use personal opinion, instead of using their own knowledge or opinions they use “evidence from their research and from other in order to infuse credibility”.

The gif above its me  thinking in what visual evidence i am going to use for the literature review that go with my topic.

This reading goes with my major because in the Business world because we use quantitative data which means that we use a lot of numbers. for example, companies and businesses may use statistical evidence to inform the owner or the personal about how they are performing on the quarter or year. this can be evidence from that years progress and then they could use it for the next year and compare to fix any problem within the company. 

I think this reading will help me with the literature review because now I understand better why we needed to find two credible sources two weeks ago and not just a random place to look for information. also for the Lit Review I  need a primary source and in my case I need a person that is related to the business world to interview, because if my paper is about business i am not going to ask a person who is a scientist because it would not be as credible as the other person.

for this paper we will have to find a lot of credible evidence about our topic. Something else that will help us is the MEAL plan, which stands for Meal, Evidence, Analysis, Link. it will help to shape the paragraphs so it can make sense  and use evidence at the same time. what i liked about the meal plan is that if you write it correctly the whole paragraph will link, the analysis to the evidence and then to the main idea, and then if all the paragraphs follows this path and you use credible evidence you could have a really good research paper and in our case a very good literature review.

RR Week 7

For week seven of this class we read chapter 5 and 6 from “Writing in Transit”. 

Chapter five talks about Summarizing, which is very important when you read any paper or essay or article because if you really understand you can summarize it, not only the easy parts like when a paragraph start like how I used to do when I was in middle school when my teachers gave me homework about summarizing but the hard parts like the main thing or the really important things that the author wants you to get out of the paper, essay or article. 

I think that this will help us with the Lit Review because at least me I choose really long articles about two big professors in the Business world, so eventually I will have to really read it instead of reading some parts of it, so when I really read it I will have to really understand it so I can summarize it and then use the information without plagiarizing. 

I think that since I am studying business I would not summarize a lot when i get a job, but if I want to grow professionally i will have to read on my own articles and then kind of summarize it but just for me so I can get the really important facts or information

I used this Gif because it could be really time consuming and stressful to read something and then analyze it and then doing a summarize over all the stuff that you just read.

Something from chapter 6 that I will consider when I write my Lit Review is that when i write it I need to make sure that the reader understand what I am saying and not just write random stuff, My goal is to make sense so he/she can understand. So from this chapter I learned that when you are writing a Lit Review or any major paper or essay, you really need to be focuses and understand the information you are giving in order to be organized so the reader can actually understand what you are trying to say.

W6 Reading Response

This week we read chapter 4 from “Writing in Transit”. reading is something very important for everyone because when you read it doesn't matter what you read you will get something from that reading, like how the author wrote on the book “what do academic writers read? Everything!” it doesn't matter what is it you will always get something out of it. maybe you are the type of person who really doesn't enjoy reading but it doesn't matter what you do, if you are in college, working, you will eventually have to read something. 

My reading process, when I read I always try to see how much I have to read and then I manage my time and distribute evenly so i don't get bored, i will try to split everything so won't try to sleep when I'm reading what I have to read. Sometimes when in a chapter there is like subchapters i try to underline or do something with the important information so when i have to do something with what i read i won't have to read it again, just read the main points again. I think is a good way to read, I am not saying its the best because when you do it you can leave some information behind. it is effective because i can manage to read the information by the time i said i will finish it. 

From chapter four examples i thin when i read i do the shallow reading, because first of all, I always try to read fast and comprehend the information, when i try this method and i don't get something i slow down and try to read it again until i understand the point better, it really doesn't matter what I'm reading i always read like this. 

From the video that I watched the thing that i got from it is that sometimes i don't care about the source or where i am getting the information but it really does matter where it comes from because sometimes it is not updated or it comes from a fake source or the information is just not accurate. i believed that from this video and the reading i got that what types of information should i look for and what i should avoid. i also think that it will help me to find what type of sources i will use for the lit review since they have to be credible and updated.

Reading Response: Week 5

In this week’s reading in “Writing in Transit,” Chapter 3 discussed the importance of posing meaningful questions within our text. It also provided us with strategies and characteristics of effective questions, as well as examples containing implicit and explicit questions within the text. Developing questions whether they are simple or complicated, but have significance to your topic/research can help get your main ideas and purpose for your paper be sent out as clearly as possible. A good question should be able to sponsor multiple branches of inquiry leading towards the topic itself and arise many more questions that come from different perspectives and ideas other than yours. As we develop meaningful questions, these can build on and advance our research. 

I can relate this reading to my major by simply looking at where I am at right now. All freshman coming to UTEP who decided to major in Nursing, got the big scare of how difficult it is to get into this program. I remember doubting myself and ASKING/ANALYZING if this major really was for me. Asking myself significant questions like “What do I have to do to get there?” “Is this career for me?” “Am I going to love my job or hate it?” “Am I going to be dedicated enough in school, to get into this program?” All these questions and many more is basically what it is, and what helped me make up my mind on what I really wanted. As for actual nurses themselves, they have to ask specific questions to their patient to comprehend what is going on. Doing so facilitates the understanding and communication between the nurse and the patient to find a solution faster. This also prompts the nurse to ask herself what the patient might be suffering from if she starts seeing that what she thought the problem was at first, isn’t the real problem.

This reading helped me be aware of how specific my questions have to be, because I tend to go for broad questions in assignments. On page 56, the figure 3.1 “Pyramid of narrowing questions” gave me a great visual understanding of how I can break down broad questions to more specific ones, and decided to share it below. As visual explanations can help more people, rather than just viewing it in plain text. Choosing a big question, can be broken down to provide more detail and help find supportive answers for our Literature Review coming up. This reading prompts me to ask how can I successfully include implicit questions within my text, like the examples provided without it being obvious. 

Topic Proposal: My genre analysis focused on moral dilemmas in nursing, this topic focused more on different perspectives. Now I would like to focus my lit review on “Moral Distress in Nursing,” which focuses more specifically on the nurses thoughts and feelings.

Reading Response Week 5

This weeks reading response is on Posing Meaningful Questions. It reminds the reader what our teachers have always told us… “there is no such thing as a dumb question”. In the Disciplinarity and Questions section it relates to my Business Major in the sense that as a business owner I will have to ask big questions. My questions would be things such as Is this a good location for my business? Is this menu item for my restaurant going to sell? And so on. This reading discusses how questions like this and research go hand in hand. Literature reviews give information about certain topics, so this chapter helped me understand how I will have to put together our next assignment without posing too many questions or arguments for the reader. It’s based more on information to keep he reader up to date. It basically answers questions a reader might have about a specific topic.

This gif relates to how I feel when I think about all the questions I need to ask before opening a business. LITERATURE REVIEW -as for the lit review assignment it was hard to come up with a topic question. I am relating it to the genre analysis, and I will be focusing on the Financial aspects of small businesses. Such as a business being profitable or not, and the growth of a business. This second gif relates to how I feel about starting up a business, where will the money come from and how much will it cost altogether.

Week 5

For this week reading assignment we read about questions, how for everything there would be different type of questions to ask. for example, if you are studying business you will ask business questions, it would depend in what are you going to ask. the author also talks about how in academic writing, some questions are more important/effective than others. learning how to ask good questions will help you develop a better writing skills.

 It also talks about how there are three types of questions. This pyramid divided in three shows the three types of questions.  The bottom part is the more broad part: General (very broad). the middle part is: Refined  (its a little bit more specific than the other one). the top part is: specific (this is the most effective type of question)

For the literature review, I choose: how to create more jobs in a small city which is related to my genre analysis. I choose this again because i think I can research a lot from this and since my major is in the business field, I could ask business questions. I did research on what ways people could create more jobs but for this one i want to make it more specific so i wanted it to be in small cities.

Reading Response

Some main points made in the article “Emerging Personal Media Genres” include the discussion of: how genres benefit a society, how a society can be more complex as the variety of genres grow, and how genres are ever evolving and growing through culture and technology. 

Considering that my major is multimedia journalism, I will be utilizing genres all the time to convey information to an audience. Wether it be through visuals, or text, or pictures, genres are used in our everyday lives. “Genres span the whole range of recognizable forms of communication.” 

After reading the article, I have a stronger understanding of how I can utilize genres to make my message stronger. Like in this tumblr post, some genres used was a picture of a woman taking a self portrait, which is a modern genre used in social media. I believe that using genres will help me with my discourse topic and as well as interacting with others.

Reading Response

A good point the article “Emerging Personal Media Genres” had was about how the different genres help communicate among all types of discourse communities. Now of course the way it’s being transmitted matters not only because there is many ways to do it, but because it has an impact in society. And with the fast growth in technology all these genres will only keep on growing.

Now keeping my major in mind, it definitely ties in because in Marketing you’re always trying to find a way to convince society to buy a certain product or service. So in one way or another these genres are something to keep in mind because we’re always communicating with society. Specially in this business world where all aspects of communication are used. That’s why I picked the following GIF because in the world of business and it’s about convincing you to buy something because in the long run its your money what we want. That’s why you often hear “nice making business with you”.

After reading this article it gave me more background knowledge of what a genre is. Yes it was a lot of information to sink in my mind and there is still a few unclear concepts, and sure enough all the examples provided help me understand a bit more. This reading will definitely help me in future assignment as I will be referring back to it to for references.

Reading Response

 For this week reading response about Emerging personal media genres, it says that there are a lot of types of genres and also that genres help communication. it also talks about that when there are more genres it becomes harder to identify  what genre something is related to.  

This genre is related to my major, which is Business Management because in the business world you have to talk to many people to get a deal or business done. it could also help by communicating something to someone by maybe using pictures or text in a powerpoint.

I think this reading opened my eyes because i didn't know how there could be that many types of genres and how close they are to us and we don't even realize they are there (at least me), for example we are using some type here by using gifs and pictures and text.

Introduction and Topic Proposal

Hello my name is Angela. This will be my fourth semester here at UTEP. My major is nursing. The reason I choose to go into this field is because I absolutely love helping people and I think its such an interesting field in general. One thing I think that is very important when choosing a career is that you must be passionate about what you are pursuing on doing and this is because when you go to work everyday, it wont even feel like it because you are doing something you love. Because my major is nursing I decided to focus my semester topic around nursing. Specifically about nurses and their safety on the job. There has been many incidences that have happened to nurses because of safety issues. I think this is an important topic to address because hopefully I will become a nurse one day and I think safety is the most important thing.
