A few weeks back I had a chance to go out to Wichita Falls, Texas to work on a story about Christian Akridge - aka ChristianLeave - for a profile in Rolling Stone on the 15-year-old social media celeb.
It’s a truly fascinating piece on the ups and downs of a teenage internet sensation from a small town who quickly rose to fame and is having to learn the business on the fly, deal with crazy people on the internet nonstop and deal with the pressures to stay active and creative while also maintaining a semi-normal life.
As Christian put it, "this social media stuff is basically my whole life now,“ which caused his parents to pull him out of school and he spends the majority of his days in his bedroom connected to the world through social media.
When I was in town we played some music, hung out on the roof, checked out a few thrift shops and hung out at the local coffee shop - all things that me and my buddies would do in high school - only we didn’t have over a million fans patiently waiting for our next tweet/vine/instagram - it’s a lot and I certainly wouldn’t have been able to handle it at his age.
The kid is hilarious, has a great attitude and out look on life. He has lofty goals and I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see him flourishing well after the social media era is over.
