Born to Dutch-immigrant parents in Chicago, Illinois, Aleksander saw a relatively unremarkable childhood into a relatively unremarkable adulthood. His father, a detective on the police force, instilled a strong moral compass into his only child and ensured that Aleksander would always have a strong sense of right from wrong - even if he didn’t quite see things in black and white. His mother, a paramedic, lent her knowledge of keeping calm under high-pressure situations to her son and it was only assured that Aleks would grow up with with a level head and an incredibly calm disposition.
He chased his father’s dreams into law enforcement, attaining a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice before becoming a police officer with the Chicago Police Department ---always careful not to let his father’s prestige step in on his own experience or consideration. Aleks worked hard to gain his experience, to earn his recommendation for promotion by twenty-seven, and to make waves as a successful homicide detective. His father was never more proud of a man than he was of his son - and it showed.
Aleks met his wife in college, a slow courtship that came from a slight bit of social anxiety on his behalf. She was incredibly, intelligent, and compassionate in every sense of the word - the love of his life, he’ll attest to this day. Nora was his better half, patient to the fullest, and stood by Aleks’ side throughout each step of his career, while furthering her own. A defense attorney, Aleks and Nora often conversed about their individual case loads over dinner, and every step of their relationship fell into place quite naturally. Dating since Aleks was 22, they were engaged when he was 25 and married a year thereafter. Aleks’ daughter, Vera, was born two years later ---the apple of his eye.
Life was good for the Hendriks family for a long while. Busy family life, a happy home, and always something to do together made the recipe for a man who never believed he’d be as placid as he was. But of course, nothing good lasts forever. Be it the danger of his own job or even the danger of Nora’s, Aleks met tragedy two years ago when his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident. Initially believing it was an accident, later evidence suggested there was criminal involvement. Aleks walked away injured but alive where his daughter and wife weren’t so lucky. After some months of recovery, he posted his transfer request to the Chicago Police Department and moved to San Amore after accepting a job there, leaving his life behind.
It’s been two years since he left his home and uprooted himself. Plagued by grief but almost entirely choosing to ignore it, Aleks is driven and incredibly dedicated to his work, even if it is much slower here than it ever was back home. He keeps himself busy, though attends mandatory therapy sessions (as mandated by work, to ensure he’s stable enough to keep on active duty) where he attempts to avoid addressing his trauma. Aleks still wears his wedding ring despite the loss of his wife, and has almost entirely withdrawn himself from any former hobby or interest in the flavor of keeping his nose to the ground and working continuously.

---The lead detective on Rose Sondersby/Nina Mikkelson’s case. Aleksander took the initial call 8 years ago and has followed with it since then. He took point and directed the initial witness protection case worker to follow her out to San Amore, and has since taken the reigns back upon moving there himself.
---Conceal carries at all times, somewhere on his person. He also always has his badge on him.
---Spoke Dutch solely until kindergarten, where he learned English in school. The same held partially true for his daughter: Vera learned Dutch alongside English as a child and spoke both fluently.
---Has a tattoo of his daughter’s date of birth on the inside of his right forearm, beneath his elbow, in roman numerals: VI.XII.MMVIII (this is his only tattoo).
---Has a pet cat he adopted a year ago: an American Maine Coon he’s affectionately named Jimmy.
