  ❝   oh hush now, you’re always much too hard on yourself. you have a heart of gold which i am fortunate to witness often, so questioning that is simply out of the matter! you absolutely would have done the same, i just happened to stumble onto this particular problem first.      ❞ alice’s tone was gentle yet surprisingly firm as she reached for her friends arm, resting her palm atop her shoulder reassuringly. alecto was as close to a sister as alice had ever had, she wouldn’t ever stand for someone speaking ill of her, especially when she was an expert at weilding the most harmful weapons.   ❝    we’ll simply have to remedy that soon, there’s sure to be another occasion to celebrate soon. hogwarts never goes long without a party or two. or even better, we should take it upon ourselves to have an evening to delight in eachothers company! we can try the latest in witch care potions.      ❞

    alecto beamed at alice’s touch,  touched by her friend’s words even if,  privately,  she wondered at the truth of them.  perhaps she could have a heart of gold,  if one focused on the fact that gold was cold and hard.  it was nice thinking alice thought it of her,  though;  even nicer than believing herself that there was any true core of goodness in her.  she was only ever as good as she could afford to be without causing herself any real trouble.  “ you’re a saint,  stop it.  I won’t have you downplaying how uniquely suited you are to doing stuff like this.  if I ever needed help,  I’d want you in charge of finding it for me. “  she shrugged,  letting some of her hair fall behind her shoulders with the motion.  truthfully,  she would want alice helping her even if she was awful at it.  but that seemed the sort of thing she didn’t need to say.   “ I hope something fun comes up soon.  obviously,  the situation with pendergrass is worrying,  but I can’t handle all this gloom in the castle when the whether’s grey enough.   which is why,  of course,  we should do something  for the two of us!  that’s the perfect idea.  we can’t just wait around for something to fall in our laps. “

      The Gryffindor pursed his lips thoughtfully as he let his gaze wander leisurely over to where the older man hunched over a pair of students seemingly to help them catch up with the rest of the group. His expression read as if he were considering the proposal that Alecto gave. Finally, his shoulders shrugged in reply to her words as he apparently lost any interest in keeping up the jest. ❝ Nah, the man seems BUSY. I can give him my sage wisdom later. ❞ He said, simply. His lips pulled up into a light smirk at the sound of her next words. ❝ Oh yeah, I love spending time in the dungeons.. must be the bright atmosphere.  ❞ He continued sarcastically. His expression soon fell back to one that was blank as he focused on the task at hand.  ❝ So.. it looks like we’ll need about five different ingredients here. You wanna go get them? Or, can you actually trust me on this one?  ❞ He responded. His words were laced with the slightest bit of malice. As much as the boy said that he didn’t care about Alecto’s sudden disapproval of him, he knew deep down that that was a LIE. Her absence hurt just as much as that of his family as much as he willed it not to.

       alecto looked back at slughorn,  too,  wondering if it was too late to give in and throw a small fit about the partner he’d assigned her.  there were at least three girls in class with them who’d give an arm to spend more time with sirius.  she saw him shrug out of the corner of her eye and whipped her focus back to him;  his smirk was infuriating,  but she fought to keep her expression still and unbothered.  “  it can absolutely wait if that’s what you think is best , “  she said.   “ I wouldn’t want to pull your focus in too many different directions.  why,  if we did that,  you might not have the chance to really bask in the atmosphere of this place. “  her lip curled in distaste,  for a brief moment,  as she swept her eyes around the potions room.  it was always so cold here.  she never felt quite warm enough.  and the mixing scents that filled the air as other pairs started on the elixer didn’t ease any discomfort.  her forced,  prolonged interaction with sirius wasn’t the only reason she’d be pleased to hurry up and get out of here.  but it was a reason.  god,  alecto wondered how it had ever been so easy to talk to him.  she scowled,  too,  at the tone of his voice;  unable to keep her expression from turning more sour.  “ trust has nothing to do with it,  trust me.  you’ve made it to the n.e.w.t. level,  I’d have assumed any partner capable of collecting ingredients.   but if you need some sort of trust to be able to do so,  say the word;  I’ll get them.  “

            there’s  a  roll  to  copper  hues;  an  instinctive  reaction.  pale  fingers  wrapping  tightly  around  the  spiral  of  his  textbook.  alecto  was  the  only  carrow  he’d  ever  give  the  light  of  day  to  —  simply  for  her  impeccable  mind.     “     i  don’t.  like  i  said,  we  have  reading  to  cover.     ”     the  reply  came  out  quick;  gaze  falling  to  the  book  as  digits  opened  it  up  to  the  correct   chapter.     “     —  besides,  it’s  been  gossiped  enough.     ”

        alecto primly flicked to the correct page in her book,  idly fingering the corner of the paper.  she didn’t mind studying in silence,  but it wasn’t quite as fun.  “ c’mon, “  she cajoled,  voice sweet.  “ it’s too early in the term for us to have any other gossip to pass the time with instead. “  she shrugged and raised a brow at tilden.  “ I mean,  I feel as if everyone’s already addressed cattermole dumping the girl that cheated him,  though we can rehash that if you’d prefer it? “

if you had to fistfight someone at hogwarts who would you FIGHT

      “ now,  I’m not typically one for fisticuffs.  nor do I believe that there’s any conflict I have here that could not be solved with a civil conversation.  however  ---  I don’t believe evan rosier is capable of civil conversation?  I still don’t know that I’d fight him,  in any drawn out sort of way,  with tussling,  or whatever.  but it’d be nice to land a solid punch right on his jaw. “

 “    if you’re here to talk about pendergrass,        well  don’t.     ”     he  deadpanned.  gaze  a  perfect  mixture  of  ash  and  copper.     “     flitwick  assigned  a  great  deal  of  reading.  so  if  you  don’t  mind,  i’d  like  to  concentrate  on  that.     ”

        “ what? “  alecto asked,  flashing a quick glance up at tilden before continuing laying out her books,  and quills,  and a roll of parchment.  “ I’m a very excellent multi - tasker.  I can talk about pendergrass and take notes on the assigned reading.  and surely you must want to talk about the whole situation,  a little. “

       Honestly, Sirius was shocked by the lack of chastising that he’d received for not paying attention to what Slughorn. That was, typically, what most of his Potion’s partners chose to do when forced to deal with his inattention. He didn’t expect anything less to come from Alecto Carrow.. who seemed to have her own stupid reasons for hating him to begin with. He watched as she gave him a blank look before slowly turning her gaze back to his book. He had thought that that would be the point where she would tell him to fuck off. But, again, he was surprised when she spoke in what seemed like an effort to complete the project. ❝ An elixir to induce euphoria, huh? Y’know, I got a few ideas for that that doesn’t require you to waste time making a potion… perhaps Slughorn could use a bit of that advice… ❞ He muttered mostly to himself. Then, his attention fell back on Alecto with her last words. ❝ Oh yeah, we wouldn’t want to be here any longer than we have to be… ❞ Sirius commented, dryly.

“ ooh,  very clever,  sirius, “  alecto intoned,  tone as hushed as his.  she shook her head,  more to herself than to him,  and didn’t work at all to conceal her eye - roll.  something told her he already knew she wasn’t the perfect audience for that comment;  but she couldn’t help what she heard,  and she couldn’t help her need to talk back.  this was why the safest route with him was always avoidance.  she couldn’t shut herself up sometimes,  and he wasn’t someone it was safe to talk to anymore.  at least there was little fear of this conversation straying too personal,  potions’ - focused though it was.  would be,  if she had her way.  “ I think slughorn’s still doing rounds,  seeing if students need help finding the page in their books or whatever.  want me to flag him down so you can share all those ideas with him? I’m sure we’re all very interested. “  she tossed a section of her hair off her shoulder and sat up straight,  book forgotten for the moment.  “  ...  so sorry,  I didn’t know you loved to linger and while away the hours in the dungeons.  we can move glacier slow,  if you’d prefer. “

❝     oh al, you’re so sweet ! oh a galleon would be more than enough, REALLY! everyone is chipping in to help, if it’s not too much trouble i think it would really help pay for the little things like school supplies and things for his younger sister. i’m just pulling as much funds together as possible in case something unexpected should arise, they don’t have to trouble themselves much, they have elsewhere to occupy themselves with.   ❞ alice was visibly delighted with her friends offer to raise her donation unexpectedly, though there was a nagging suspicion in the pit of her stomach that the mention of this situation was triggering other issues in alecto’s mind.  ❝     just doing my part, you’re a big help for even saying yes ! i’m not surprised though, you have a big heart. which reminds me, why is this the first i’ve seen you since we’ve been back, were you not at the party bi     ❞

“ it’s not sweet,  really,  “  alecto demurred with a smile at alice;  warm and a touch amused,  looking at her friend be so pleased with her.  “ you’re the sweet one,  making sure they have some security right now.  goodness knows I wouldn’t have thought to help like this. “   her smile dimmed.  not immediately,  she didn’t think,  and not enough to be noticeable.  she hid it by looking down and busying herself with grabbing the two promised galleons.  better they both not dwell on how this sort of kindness was so much more alice’s arena than alecto’s,  on how it literally wouldn’t have occurred to alecto at all.  sometimes she looked at her friend and thought she never spent as much time as the fortescues as she should have;  and other times,  freshly freed of own family,  alecto thought she spent too much time with the fortescues,  wishing things were different.  she found the coins and held them out to alice,  jokingly triumphant as she turned her smile back on,  megawatt.   “  stop,  my heart is practically blushing.  I was at the party,  here and there.  clearly not having as good a time as I could’ve been,  since I didn’t get to see you. “

When it came to Potions, Sirius often lacked the focus needed to do what he was supposed to in class. …Actually, that was something that could be said about every subject that the boy was forced to take at Hogwarts. But, it seemed to be especially true when it came to Potions. Which is why, when Slughorn had been giving directions he’d instead been trying to flirt with the girl seated in the row across from him. So, needless to say, he was clueless when they were released for what they were supposed to be doing. He turned towards the unfortunate soul designated to be his Potions partner and asked, ❝ Okay, what the hell are we supposed to be doing? ❞ Obviously, he hadn’t paid much attention when Slughorn was divvying out partners either or he would’ve had some complaint to the one sitting right beside him. // @ahlecto​ 

had alecto been assigned almost anyone else for a potions partner,  and had that anyone else turned to her with the same question on their tongue,  she would’ve been pissed beyond belief.  instead,  she was more annoyed at herself for not being automatically annoyed with sirius;  all the years of forcing distance without the stomach for outright cruelty had made it hard for her to  conjure normal reactions to him.  instead of being pissed beyond belief,  she blinked at him,  slowly.  then she slid her gaze to the open book in front of her.  she would argue it was not a dismissal;  after her attention was focused elsewhere,  she said,  “ we’re meant to brew the elixir to induce euphoria. “  she checked the bottom of the page before looking back at sirius with a single arched brow.  “ it’s the second recipe in chapter eighteen.  there’s only eleven steps,  so if we're focused,  we needn’t be here long. “

❝     SO i know it might come off as a terrible imposition but really anything you can spare would be more than welcome! afterall ernie is barely getting through his third year as is, he shouldn’t have to trouble himself with taking care of his household! i think it’s far too young to take on such a big responsibility. there’s no news yet about mr. maddock but i think it’s about time his classmate stepped up to help until news turns up ! aurors are doing their part, so should we. shall i jot you down for 2 sickles ?    ❞

       “  ---  sure,  I could absolutely give two sickles, “  alecto said,  answering almost on instinct.  then she paused,  her hand reaching for the coin purse kept in her bag.  " do you only need two sickles?  I could spare a galleon or two,  if it helps. “  alecto felt a small pang course through her,  knowing full well she had enough in her vault to spare more than two galleons;  but her parents had never been all that keen on charity,  and she had a sinking suspicion they knew too - well what she did with her coin.  “ I mean,  you’re doing so much going around collecting,  it seems only right I give what I can. “

" oh,  “  alecto said,  watching mary with widening eyes and a half smile.  “  ---  of course,  I’d be more than happy to hide you,  though I don’t know how  ---  “  she trailed off again and cast a wide glance behind mary,  to the sides of them.  absently,  she absorbed the information coming her way.  “ I think if I were dating someone,  I might kiss griffiths for fun once if he were offering.  though I don’t know if I’d engage in any more intense,  prolonged cheating with him.  he doesn’t seem very exciting,  does he?  he’s in that silly dragons club. “  alecto paused and took to shuffling her and mary both behind a crowd of rowdy hufflepuff boys a few yards away.  their intense game of exploding snap might dissuade any intense investigation.  “ but cattermole was definitely fair game,  what the hell.  if it wasn’t you,  it would’ve been someone else;  clearly he wasn’t opposed to moving on. “

regulus returned her smile before bringing his drink up towards his mouth, swirling it around slightly before taking a large sip of the contents. “alecto, you do as well.” he agreed, bringing his bottle back down to shrug slightly. “i haven’t. doesn’t mean i would be opposed. can i get you a drink in the meantime?”

“ thank you, “  she said.  it was always reassuring when she could still have nice conversations with at least one of the black boys.  “ it seems fun  ---  though I’d be careful if it comes to you. “  she wrinkled her nose on a light laugh.  “ someone’s ears grew and stayed over - sized for an hour.  who knows what else could happen if you take a piece?  and  ---  I still have some of my drink left,  but if you’re looking to refresh your beverage I could do with a walk towards the drinks?  maybe by the time we get there I’ll be done. “

❝ Well.. we wouldn’t want to accuse Alecto Carrow of being anything other than polite now, would we? ❞ Sirius responded, voice laced heavily with sarcasm. There was another pointless glimpse towards the glass in his hand. He made no attempt to bring it back to his lips, however, as that wouldn’t do him any good. Unfortunately, he wouldn’t be met with the buzz of alcohol that he so desperately craved in order to get him through the remainder of this conversation. His eyebrows rose in response to her next words before a laugh–cold and hollow–escaped his lips. ❝ Oh, is that so? ❞ He questioned, ❝ And what are you wanting then? A ribbon? A pat on the back? ❞ Oh, he knew that he was being a dick, but it wasn’t as if she deserved for him to act any other way towards her.

“ you can accuse me of whatever you want,  sirius, “  alecto said,  the permission flying out exasperated,  a little mean.  she wasn’t as good at sarcastic as he was,  but there was no mistaking her for polite now.  she saw him look at his glass and abstain from drinking and decided stubbornly that if he wasn’t going to drink anymore,  then she needn’t either.  that she wanted to get drunk for this conversation was probably a hint she shouldn’t.  his harsh laughter was sobering enough to make her regret the choice as soon as it was made.  “ really,  any accusation is fine.  so long as you accompany it with a pat on the back I’ll be happy to take it,  right? “  she didn’t think anyone who hadn’t grown up with her would know how much she craved approval;  for all that it was easier to pretend sirius was a stranger,  it would do her good to remember he wasn’t.  “ and if you ever do something worth congratulating,  I’ll get on making you a ribbon,  too.  does that sound nice? “

“you mean you want me to see him in a swim suit that fits him perfectly?” eddie asked solemnly, mouth open in exaggerated shock. “just sounds boring.” before he ghosted, cracking a smile. “thank you, i appreciate that! i might have to go find some centaurs to have a look at the stars for me, see what they’re saying        if they predict there’ll be a new furry friend in my future.” he laughed. “what?? how can a letter opener be weird? i’ve got to see that. strangest thing i got was… oh, one of my friends got me an inflatable tongue, which i opened in front of my family. that was cool. but then there was a howler that told me      mind you this is still in front of everyone     to put it up my arse ‘cause i like that, which was a bit awkward to explain. good thing my parents just thought it was funny.”

alecto tapped a well - manicured finger to her lips,  taking the time to pretend to mull over his question.  “ I mean  ---  I wouldn’t want to bore you,  but seeing as I like you,  what I really want is for you to not have to see him in any swimsuits. “  she paused,  a look of false consideration stealing over her face.  she fought off a smile and shrugged.  “ unless that’s what you’re into?  he’s not the staff member I would most want to see in a swimsuit,  but to each their own;  I won’t judge. “  a giggle she couldn’t keep down finally escaped.  alecto wasn’t the most judgmental person she knew,  but there would be some judgement if she learned edgar really did want to see hagrid all scantily clad.  “ you should do that,  though.  the love of a puppy might soothe the memory having that conversation with your parents,  so it’ll definitely be worth asking the centaurs a favor.  funnily enough,  the letter opener was also body - part shaped.  any guesses on which part? “
