she didn’t like busses so she didn’t take them. subways were faster, everyone sat in silence together, and the hum and buzz of the speeding metal car vibrated into her bones to untie the tight knots of her joints. an unpopular opinion, but her own to keep. the pleather of the bus seat was cracked, strings of fabric sticking out in all directions. the colors were worn from other bodies and the shake of jump of the large bus brought on a motion sickness she would rather have avoided but her destination was too close to take the subway and too far to walk. so after process of elimination, a bus was what she was left with.
with a sigh she leaned back, resting her head against the uncomfortable pleather headrest and closing her eyes tightly. the shrill squeaks of metal pierced the air when the tires of the bus came into contact with holes or bumps in the streets and the underdeveloped area had plenty of each.
late afternoon was slowly easing its way into the early hours of the night. olympia usually tried to leave her boss’s agency before five to avoid a rush of office workers but the hour hand on her silver watch rested just past six. she knew when she left the office, young spring wing swirling and pushing about in the air, the subway would be way too crowded by now anyway. hongdae was only around a 15 minute bus ride, 20 at the max, so what the hell.
but also... what the hell.
a small five minutes passed when a pop! rang out, the bus shuddering and jumping to a stop in the rightmost lane. “sorry about this,” the driver stood up, wetting his lips nervously. “i think we’ve popped a tire.”
she sank back while the driver turned to call roadside assistance, groaning and twisting in her seat to face the window for a moment before writhing again and sitting straight up, peering over the back of the seat in front of her to see the inhabitant.
“hey,” she started to speak, motioning to the driver. “did he say anything about calling another bus? or how long this is gonna take? not that i’m in any rush, actually, this is just... not what i had planned for the evening.”
