“I suppose but I hope there is less fighting and just more… cuddling?” Well she was going to say something else but she was pretty certain they already did plenty of that. “How about you come to mine tonight and we watch something and order food again? I know it’s pretty plain but I like nights in when its with you.”

Aiden laughed, “Jules, you know you can have all the cuddles you want but I have an inkling that wasn’t what you were gonna say,” He teased, “Nights in with you are my favourite nights. Let’s do it.”

“Aiden, you don’t have to parent me,” she commented, but took a seat anyway. “I can take care of myself. Well, sort of.”

“It’s not about having to. You’re my sister, I’m always gonna take care of you even when you try and push me away,” Aiden said and placed his fingers gently around the bruise when she sat so he could examine it, “How long ago did this happen? Did you put ice on it?”

“I don’t suppose you have any food on you that isn’t chocolate?” Hugo asked the person who he sensed passing by as he lay on the ground on his stomach trying to coerce the puppy out from the spot where it seemed to be stuck. “Apparently my abilities and baby talk aren’t doing the trick and I might have to resort to food tactics.”

“I have TicTacs but I don’t think that’s the kind of thing you’re after.”

“We’ll both work on this a little bit more. I suppose this is both of our fault after all.” It took two people to have an argument so she could at least own up to the part she played in it. “Mhm… I’ve never been to a vets before so I hope it’s a good one.”

“That’s what relationships are for right?” Aiden asked with a smile, “I’m sure it is. I feel like if it was any kind of bad, we would have heard things about it by now.”

The guilt that had been gnawing at her was all but climbing up her throat now, she felt bad for her siblings, how come she got the perfect life and they ended up on the streets, it wasn’t fair and yet there was nothing she could do to change what happened to them. “But that still shouldn’t factor in her anger towards you, it’s not your fault, Aiden. You had no say to which family you two were sent too-..” She sighed, “Why didn’t you say anything to her when you knew who she was?” She couldn’t help but ask, knowing if the roles had been reversed she would have been wanting to reunite with her siblings as soon as she found them. “It’s not fine, Aiden. We should be celebrating the fact that we’re all here together now, that we’re all safe and relatively happy. That we found one another. Do you want me to talk to her?”

“We didn’t get families. We got foster homes and the streets. We were our only family,” Aiden pointed out and then shrugged, “I don’t know. Because I’m an idiot, I guess,” Looking back, he had no reason for it except for interrupting her life and being scared. He shook his head, “No, don’t. She doesn’t need to be pushed, she needs time.”

“I’m fine,” Sloane insisted. “Some girl was being a bitch about your cooking and then was talking shit about Darcy, so I took a punch, and well she didn’t have a bad right hook.”

“My cooking?” Aiden asked. Talking shit about Darcy, he understood but him? He pulled out the chair in the break room and gestured, “Sit,” Both of them had experience with injuries like this. It was nothing new but that didn’t mean he couldn’t take a look and try and help with the healing. He was trained in first aid after all.

“It’s nothing,” Sloane said to the other, hiding her black eye beneath her hair a little more. “It doesn’t even hurt that much.”

“Sloane, what the hell happened?” Aiden asked, looking at her both panicked and concerned, “Who did this to you?”

“If you could? It’s not confidential, even if it was, we’d be screwed anyway.”

“You make a good point. Better get looking then.”

“I don’t want to though Aiden. It doesn’t make me feel better to put you down. I hate shouting at you.” She stated softly, feeling her anger and frustration slowly ebbing away. “But yeah… enough of this. It’s not fair on the dog to be stuck out her. Clearly they need to be checked out and made sure they are well. We can wait until after that.”

“You’re not putting me down. You’re getting mad for me taking teasing too far. It’s only fair. But if you’d rather not, maybe I can just work on reading signals better,” Aiden said with a smile, “No time to waste then right? We’re near the vet already anyway.”

“It’s not your fault we got split up, Aiden. It was the system.” Darcy commented, guilt gnawing at her stomach after having the information on both her siblings and yet doing nothing about it because she was happy, she had a family and they treated her with nothing but kindness. “But why be mad at you and not me? Why isn’t that anger directed towards me either, I don’t want your relationship to be strained and ours to be fine. It’s not fair.”

“Because you got a happy family, someone to look after you. Before that, I looked after you guys when mom couldn’t and wouldn’t. It was different for her because she didn’t get the happy family, neither of us did. We got crappy foster homes, running away and living on the streets,” The latter were about him. He didn’t know exactly what she had been up to in those years but he couldn’t imagine it’ll be much better, “Also the fact that I knew who she was for months after she got here and didn’t say,” He paused, “It’s fine,” He lied, “Darcy, she’s allowed to be happy to see you again and not me.”

“Maybe it’s somewhere in HQ. Hopefully.”

“That’s certainly where you should start looking,” Aiden said, “I know it’s probably all confidential but if you need help looking, I’m not busy.”

Juliet seemed to exhale a hell of a lot of air as she held the dog, turning on the spot. She hated getting annoyed because she’d never been all that good at controlling her anger but more than that, she hated who it was currently aimed at. Aiden was the one person she could always rely on which was perhaps why she’d been so touchy with the subject matter. “I know you are normally. You don’t always agree with me.” And that was fine, he didn’t have to given they were their own people at the end of the day. “I’m sorry I yelled at you, I just hate people thinking I can’t take care of myself. I’ve done it for long enough even if you have been there to help.” Her fingers squeezed his hand. 

“Hey, how many times if you looked after me?” Aiden asked, “Picked me up when having a bad day? I’d be a hypocrite if I said you couldn’t look after yourself,” He smiled, squeezing her hand back and leaning in to kiss her quickly, “And it’s okay. Yell at me all you like. I can take it,” He wasn’t the best at confrontation but when she was yelling at him, he could usually tell when it was directed at him and when it was coming from something else, “Now let’s get this dog sorted, okay?”

“That would be an interesting power. I wonder if anyone has it.”

“I’m not familiar with the rules and regulations of HQ but that does sound like something to be concerned about.”

“Tough enough for me to consider changing occupations from time to time and yet I’m still here.”

“I’m a combat trainer for HQ, just got hired.”

“That’s certainly gonna be fun,” Aiden said, “You’ll get to meet loads of interesting people there.”

“To you it was a joke. I don’t know how many times I had to repeat myself and you still didn’t seem to grasp that I didn’t find it funny. If both people aren’t laughing that just makes you the asshole.” Juliet spoke as abruptly as ever, not even holding back for the sake of her boyfriend but he knew what he was getting into when he decided to date her. Juliet had never censored herself for anyone but she also knew she had a hot anger that was liable to burn anyone when she got annoyed. While she didn’t want to push him away, Juliet also knew she wasn’t in the right frame of mind to really have him around right now. “Look, I am not going to force you to leave Aiden but if you are here at least be supportive. You should be the person to build me up not bring me down.”

Aiden nodded in understanding but didn’t say anything further. He had always appreciated her honesty, loved her for it even, and never took it personally when she was abrupt. She always had been and was with everybody. He gave her a small smile, “I’ll come and of course I’ll be supportive, even take you to buy supplies if he ends up without an owner,” He paused and took her hand gently, “You know I’m always supportive of your decisions right? Whether I agree or not and even if I joke or tease. I’ve always got your back.”
