To accompany the larger installation I have at the end of year show I created a series of screen prints looking at colour relationships and building up the layers with different effects.

The two presented here were in my opinion, the most successful as they had achieved what I had set out to do and work well in response to the theme of engaging the viewer visually as they are drawn into the colours and invited to look deeper at what is being presented.

Due to space restrictions, only one was able to go into the end of year show and I had chosen the blue image on the left.

This is an example of my work in situ at the University where it is being displayed. The work would be placed on the wall with self adhesive vinyl and there would be an accompanying image on the floor to create a contrast and, again going back to my concept of engaging the viewers attention through the use of colour.

Psychedelic Art

Looking at other styles of art that relate to my theme I researched into psychedelic Art. The movement which predominantly focused around drug use was often used within promotion of rock concerts through posters, and has many relations to music.

The psychedelic movement began in the mid 1960’s and had an effect, not just on music, but also on many aspects of popular culture. This included style of dress, language and the way people spoke, art, literature and philosophy.

The visual motifs of psychedelic art include Art Nouveau-inspired curvilinear shapes, illegible hand-drawn type, and intense optical colour vibration inspired by the pop art movement.

One artist of relevance was Victor Moscoso. Working as a graphic designer in the Pop-Art movement, Moscoso focused on the use of colour to create these psychedelic effects on the viewer.

He used the concept of vibrating colors to create the ‘psychedelic’ effect in many of his pieces. The vibration is achieved by taking colors from the opposite end of the color wheel, each one having equal value (dark to light) and intensity (brightness).

Considering ways of displaying my work I had my images printed as postcard size photographs. I displayed them on a black display book that opened out. The black style worked well in contrast to the vibrant images and left it with a professional look.

After considering the best way to present my images I explored the idea of changing their shapes, this was explored through squares, diamonds and circles. This lead me to the conclusion that the circle worked best in regards to my theme as there were no edges so the image became purely about the colour. The shape also worked well as it was almost like a window into this other world.

The two images chosen are the ones I intend to have printed on a large scale and put on display at the end of year show.

Researching other artists and how they respond to the idea of capturing the viewer through the use of colour I found the work of Olafur Eliasson.

Eliasson’s work in this piece focuses on capturing the audience and submerging them in an experience built up of light and colour, the work is relevant to my concept of capturing the viewer through the use of colour, he has achieved this through the use of mirrors to create a piece that takes over the whole gallery space.

The glow of the colours change between pink, purple and blue these colours are quite harmonious to each other and would have a more positive effect on the viewer than having colours that would clash with each other. The consideration of which colours work together is essential when making my own artwork.

The title of the work, “Your Double Lighthouse Project” contains the word ‘Your’ which Eliasson says allows the audience to become person with the work and to ‘own’ their experience within the piece, this could be of use to me as it makes them become personally apart of the work not just visually.

These are examples of some of the developed imagery I created through the use of layering the long exposed imaged using more of a variety of selected colours to create the same visual sense as a representation of that experienced in a nightclub

Using some basic long exposure photographs I had taken I then took the images and played multiple ones together on photoshop and enhanced the colours, this gave me some really successful results that could be printed and used as final pieces within the end of year show.

For the final project I had to think of a way to develop my ideas. This lead me to thinking what would successfully work with my theme of escapism and the idea of the viewer losing themselves in the artwork as a response to the experience we have in relation to the nightlife scene. I came to the conclusion that my earlier long exposured photographs were key to this so went back to taking some simple yet interesting long exposured photographs. These 4 are a selection of images from hundreds I had taken.

Developing other ways I can explore my concept, I create a series of screen prints. The theme of my work is a response to what we experience when we are in a situation out of the every day norm, one we lose ourselves in. The prints are a representation of this, the square stands for the every day normal routine, the ‘frame’ of the artwork, while the coloured splashes are the art escaping from its normal frame, in the same respects people put themselves in situations such as parties and go to clubs to escape from their normal every day life.

Experimenting with colour in motion I created a short animation using coloured sheets of paper, these however seemed too flat and didn’t have much depth to what it was I was trying to create, this lead me to using a combination of the coloured sheets of paper and coloured acetate, I moved these colours under the camera and managed to create interesting shapes, colours and movements that had the depth I was trying to create. These images are some stills from the clip and this will be an area I will develop.
