Maddox couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear. “Cute…but you need critical acclaim to make it on a Vogue cover as a dude. Ask me again when I know you better.” He teased. His jovial tone switched to a more empathetic one. He couldn’t tell if he asked his next question out of curiosity or as a cry for help. Maddox was determined to be genuine either way. “Well…I have two sisters, and sometimes when they were talking about boys growing up I would feel a weird urge to share my opinion. I’ve kinda always suspected…but I think I knew when…” He paused, reflecting on his experience. “…I don’t know how to explain it, honestly. It was just a different feeling….like it’s subtle and then all of a sudden you’re picturing your karate sensei in a jockstrap.” Maddox explained before laughing. “I may not be the best person to ask, sexuality has never been too black and white for me.” He shrugged again.
“Haven’t the Kardashians had Vogue covers?” Aiden looked over at Maddox with a chuckle. “I don’t think they’re really so concerned about ‘critical acclaim’ anymore.” He nodded as he walked with him, knowing exactly what Maddox was talking about. “Oh, I... I guess that makes sense.” A small smile did return to his face as they reached the diner, and he held the door open for Maddox. “Jockstrap, huh? That’s.. oddly specific. I’m guessing you’re not just making a metaphor?” As if he hadn’t had hundreds of similar thoughts, not about Maddox’s sensei, he didn’t know the dude, after all, but about guys back in New York. He’d pretty much already known, that he was gay, but hearing the story of a guy who knew he was into guys, and how similar it was to things he’d felt himself only confirmed it.
