this is how I see their current relationship dynamic
Hi is this anything
this is what happened right
I'm bargaining for my life here, Counselor.
Men would rather resume their secret vigilante identity, go to prison and beat the hell out of their best friend’s killer, crash the mayor’s party, emotionally neglect their therapist girlfriend, and then take a BULLET for their arch nemesis rather than go to therapy
i feel like some of you are unable to wrap your heads around matt being a flawed person beyond "uwu my flawed traumatized baby"
he lies, he's reckless, he wrongs and disrespects the people he cares about, he's a hypocrite of the highest order, he decides that sometimes he knows best and that he is right to bulldoze over the motivations of other people.
after outing ayala as the white tiger in court — which i do think is in-character, he's a great lawyer but he's known to take risks and allow his daredevil-ness to bleed into how he presents his clients — he tries to moralize to hector with borrowed lines from maggie. matt, with his current rejectionist viewpoint on vigilantism, thinks he has done hector a favor by making it impossible or hard for him to be white tiger. he makes false equivalencies and says things that he knows are bullshit because he's deluding himself.
despite all his altruism (which he is currently going on a year of suppressing), matt is a spectacularly self-centered person. it's an argument he and foggy had multiple times. but as the audience, we can see the extent of it in a way that foggy can't: matt filters the world around him through the ways he thinks about himself. vigilantism lost matt his best friend, therefore it is not only okay but right for him to take the white tiger from hector (it would protect his loved ones).
but we know that matt is still experiencing a great deal of cognitive dissonance. it's not really as simple as "vigilantism bad" for him, is it? so we get matt saying things he would not otherwise say, not only to justify himself to hector but also to convince himself.
This all seemed so clear in the convo he and Hector had in the cell. Everything Matt's done has been completely in character. Charlie Cox knows this character better than any of us, and he and D'Onofrio made sure to get it right - hence the re-writes. None of these characters are black and white which is the whole point of this series and I LOVE it. Matt thought *his* vigilantism was justified (pre-S4) - but so did Frank. Those two respect each other but they profoundly disagree on approach. Fisk has gone through believing himself a good person to realizing he isn't. I dunno what Echo's affect on him is yet but he definitely hasn't really changed. He still thinks he's justified in his actions. Whoever is impersonating Frank probably thinks they're justified too, which is a fantastic set up for wherever this is going - who gets to be a vigilante? Matt has religion as his moral compass, believes he's doing right. Hector had a magic amulet, and believed he was doing right. Frank saw the pain of bad men, and believed he was doing right. These shitty cops probably believe they're doing right... but they clearly are not. I *love* how they're focusing on that line, and how grey and blurred it all is.
I didn't know fandom existed during the first series and I thought it was gonna be fun, but so far it just seems like everyone is complaining about their blorbos not doing exactly what they want. This story is fucking fascinating, and I'm so excited to see what collision course all these people are on.
We need, like, a Pro DDBA group.
Something I adore about Daredevil is that the characters, all of them, make mistakes and do things that hurt other people, and the show doesn't give us a neon sign saying "FYI THIS WAS A BAD IDEA." The show just lets it happen and trusts us, as audience members, to be smart enough to figure out what we think.
And with Matt, we constantly see him making choices for reasons that he thinks are good but those reasons are hypocritical but he sincerely believes them but then the choices have a bad outcome but it's not entirely bad, but it's still bad, and even if the outcome isn't all that bad, it still seems disrespectful because he's sort of denying the agency of someone else in his efforts to "save" them but it's because he cares and he's trying to do the right thing but but but but -
And goodness. How rare is it to have a character like that in media these days? One so complex and flawed and human?
Matt is a traumatised belligerent arrogant mess with a good heart and adorable expressions. And we love him for it. But knowing him irl should come with its own care package of punching pillow, screaming bag and unlimited vouchers for therapy.
The memories hurt sometimes

I did what I had to do and I let the system take care of the rest- Oh, you and your goddamn system! Christ! So what now? Every day, Bullseye goes to the chow hole, eats his slop, you know he gets to breathe the same air that you breathe. You feel good about that?
I thought I could bring an end to the world's suffering, but when every equation was solved, all that remained were fields of dreamless solitude. There is no prize to perfection, only an end to persuit.

Alright, GG everyone. See y'all next week for another episode of "how can we make Matt Murdock's life more miserable"
I think these comments about Matt from a Marvel comics editor really highlights all of his actions in this episode quite nicely:
