“We as a fandom have to talk about-” No. No we don’t. You can talk about it if you want to. That’s fine, if that’s how you fandom then go for it. I hope it works out for you because I want you to enjoy your fandom experience. But if I’m in fandom for reasons that’s counter to, then I have no obligation to talk about it. I don’t have to talk about anything except what I want to.

“Okay but you have to talk about your fave’s flaws-” No! No I don’t! I have to be able to acknowledge those flaws when they come up. I have to be able to admit that my character has flaws, and accept when others talk about those flaws. But I don’t have to talk about them if I don’t want to. If I want to only focus on the better aspects of my fave, even if that means just shallowly talking about how hot they are, I can. That’s my choice, that’s how I’ve decided to enjoy them.

Fandom is meant to be fun. Fandom is meant to be a hobby. I don’t have to talk about any aspect of my favorite story or ship or character or writer or anything if I don’t want to. You know what’s not fun? Having to talk about the ways my favorite thing is bad every time I want to talk about it. Having to point out my favorite thing’s flaws instead of the things that makes me enjoy it. Having to disclaim before I get to sing something’s praises because “yeah I know it’s shit BUT”. No. I can know something is bad without needing to talk about it.

Listen. If the way you fandom is to spend all of your time on critical analysis and unpack everything that makes the thing you like problematic, if that’s what you’re about, then go for it. I mean it. If that’s how you get on, then you do you, and I stand by what I said above, I hope it works out for you. I want everyone to be able to enjoy their fandom experience, even if I can’t wrap my head around why the way they fandom is enjoyable.

But I don’t owe anyone anything. If I don’t want to have a big public discussion about how problematic my favorite thing is, then I don’t have to. That’s my choice. I don’t have to perform a requisite level of discourse to be able to enjoy something; I can just enjoy it, and no one else gets a say in that.

It’s not a rationalization, it’s reality. I can fandom sans discourse if that’s the way I choose to fandom. End of sentence.

Kinda tired of the whole "Snape wasn't a good person, but he was a great character." take that keeps being regurgitated. Snape wasn't a NICE person, and yes he initially was not for the Order's cause, but if ya'll don't think he died a good person I just don't know what to say. I have 2 burning questions when it comes to Snape. 1. In PoA why did he summon a stretcher for Sirius Black? Like this actually makes my brain hurt when I try to make sense of it. Its a small, and almost inconsequential thing, but it sticks in my brain because...would I have done the same? I honestly don't know if I would. I want to hope I would, but if it was for someone who did anything close to what Sirius did to Severus...I don't know. 2.Snape saves Lupin's life. Why? Whyyyyyyy? He hates Lupin (right, Right?!) Why was he taking those kind of risks? What for?!!!!! If he's such a mustache twirlin bad dude, why is he taking such stupid risks? He could have just stuck with the plan, and ignored every other person, because what does he care for anyone elses life? Well apparently a lot because he was bouncing around doing whatever it took to keep even people he despised alive. He could have blown his cover, and Merlin forbid he ever had, do fans really never contemplate what would have befallen the man had he ever blown his cover? There's a reason Dumbledore didn't want to fall to Bellatrix, Macnair, or Greyback's tender mercies. I'm just saying, why would a bad rude horrible man do such things? Someone make it make sense!!

Obliviation and Occlumency

(I sometimes write things that I find later, and think…huh, how did I forget about this…)

Aberforth discovers Snape eavesdropping and starts to argue with him, which causes them both to miss the end of the prophecy.  The door swings open, and Trelawney spots Snape - but she’s then bustled off, and isn’t privy to what happens next.

Albus and Aberforth drag Snape into the room and lock the door - and faced with a teenager who is most certainly not Order aligned, and almost certainly Death Eater aligned, Albus decides to Obliviate him.

But this night is the last straw for Snape; he can’t turn up to his contacts again without any information, and this - THIS - is big.  He knows it’s big.  So he panics at the thought of it being ripped from his mind, and he instinctively Occludes.

His use of Occlumency causes the Obliviate to fail.

When Albus gets an unexpected request to meet with a Death Eater he suddenly becomes aware that you can use Occlumency to block an Obliviate.  You learn something new every day, it seems, even at his ripe old age.  

But even more importantly, he suddenly realises that he’s potentially found a way into the Death Eater camp; a spy who can keep secrets, despite Voldemort’s prowess at Legilimency.

Summer is officially over…but I’m reminiscing the warm, lazy days. Here is a scene with young Lucius Malfoy, Narcissa Black, and Severus Snape intermingling…enjoying the sun on the Hogwarts lawn. This is a commission for @thessakenway who asked me to illustrate her OT3 in a beautiful way. 

Some details to note: I was asked for all three to be interacting/touching in a very subtle way. I paid a lot of attention to their body placement in order to best convey that naturally. Narcissa is lying on Lucius’s chest, about to touch his face. Lucius is looking at Narcissa, one arm under and hand around her waist. Snape is not third-wheeling; Narcissa is fingering his tie, and Lucius has a pinky looped around Severus’s hand. All three are fully clothed, but the sexual tension is there if you pause to look…hidden in plain sight.

The Birth of Severus Snape

Eileen’s father wasn’t one for keeping everything in order and never officially cut off his daughter, meaning the magical side. When Severus Snape was born, the name on the muggle record was Nancy Snape, named after Tobias’s mother. The Daily Prophet, which was bound to the family magic to announce the birth of their child, announced a Severus Snape. A friend of Eileen’s mailed the announcement to congratulate her and question the Snape bloodline, Eileen was aware of the magic and knew what that meant.

Tobias had a fit the first time Eileen called their child he. Eileen then did her best to respect her husband’s wishes in calling their child Nancy and she. That did little to stop the bloodline birth announcement from coming true because being called trans at birth meant the child would never live the gender assigned at birth. Little Sev got in a fight with his father at the tender age of two when he called him a cute little girl, asserting he was a boy and not a girl. It was also the first time little Sev exhibited magic. The night did not end well.

Tobias’s temper, drinking, and other problems began. Eileen wished Severus would submit and become Nancy to spare the both of them, but a day when they took refuge in a public library, little four year old Sev was looking at a history book and found a name he could read. He pointed to the name and told his mother that he wanted people to call him Severus instead of Nancy because he hated the name Nancy. After more than two years of suffering at the hand of Tobias, Eileen realized she would just have to teach Severus to code switch from home to not-home.

Eileen encouraged Severus to submit to long hair and dresses by showing pictures of wizards from her books in robes and long hair. She convinced him to go by his surname outside the home and inside the home he was referred to mostly as duck, unless his father was angry and drunk, then he was called many more unsavory things and Nancy.

some good little Snape moments I appreciated more in my last Philosopher’s Stone reread

Snape makes an appointment to threaten Quirrell in the middle of the Forbidden Forest at night, and comes with a hooded cloak the sole purpose of which is to look cool, because Harry spotted him across the Hogwarts grounds immediately

what I love about this is that this exercise in intimidation hinges on Quirrell acquiescing to the whole charade

of course Snape gets there after Quirrell because what’s a staged intimidation worth without a dramatic entrance?

also there’s no way in hell that Quirrell got unwillingly roped into this. Quirrell enabled this

Quirrell fucking loved Snape’s antics. none of it was an accident. he was having the time of his life for sure (that little speech about swooping bats?)

and Snape doesn’t notice because he was too busy stepping up to his mental image of himself as a cool and menacing guy

he overhears Harry speculating about his allegiances, and his reaction is to crank up the evil persona

with a smile on his face the whole time because he’s so pleased about his street cred among 11 year-olds!!

worth noting that as he threatens and misleads Harry he also does it in a way that could be mistaken for cautioning him to stay safe. except, you know, he’s also implying that yes he is going to steal the Stone and this is Harry James Potter, so it’s uh fairly obvious this was going to have the opposite effect

History of the Prince Family

Once upon a time, Eileen Prince was the daughter of the British Prince line and an Eastern European Jew. Their neighbors, the Nott’s were very upset at this marriage because she was a foreigner and wasn’t a protestant. This lead to their family being excluded from the sacred 28 list and from pureblood gatherings and for Eileen’s parents to start fighting.

When Eileen left for Hogwarts, her mother moved back to family elsewhere in Europe, leaving her father alone. Her father had a midlife crisis that the newer Malfoy’s decided to take advantage of, using Mr. Prince to push laws and gain sympathy to enact laws that the Malfor’s wished to enact. This meant that her father was in and out of Azkaban a lot and she was left to herself while she was Hogwarts age.

Being excluded from pureblood circles except the Malfoy’s and being in a pureblood family that taught her to hate muggles, Eileen became quite a loner. When she got lonely, she hung out at the Malfoy home where the younger Nott met and began falling in love with her. 

At the party where the son of Cantankerus Nott (Sacred 28 author), the son defiantly chose Eileen Prince. The party fell into chaos as he was mocked for his decision and his father sent of several curses in frustration. Lord Voldemort/Tom Riddle was called upon to talk young Nott out of his foolish decision. He succeeded and Eileen was rudely broken up with in her first encounter with Death Eaters.

Fully embarrassed and her father was in one of his stints in Azkaban, Eileen runs away from the magical community and hides in a poor muggle town where she meets Tobias and decides to sleep with him off the bat to fully rebel against her upbringing and her difficult life. Tobias, who struggled getting any woman to even tolerate him, did his best to keep her coming back because he didn’t want to lose her, leading them to be married before Eileen’s father was released from Azkaban. Eileen was cut off once her father discovered her relationship with a muggle, this made her struggle performing magic because she felt cut off from the magical world.

I think the ultimate proof that there is a classist element in James and Sirius’s bullying of Snape is that James jumps on Snape when Snape says he wanted to be sorted in Slytherin, thus inagurating their hatred of each other. However, when Sirius says that all of his family was in Slytherin, James only says “and here I thought you were alright” but proceeded to allow Sirius into joining him to make fun of Snape and Lily.

Both Snape and Sirius reveal a connection to Slytherin, and James offers condemnation in both cases, but his attitude towards Sirius was already markedly different. Given that Sirius hadn’t yet the chance to disavow Slytherin, James had no way of knowing Sirius’s complicated relationship with his own family. Therefore, James’s antipathy towards Snape surpassed the issue of House rivalry and has to be explained by Snape’s aspect and demeanour - the poor, neglected kid from whom James so clearly differed.

100%.  I’ve said this a billion times.

James makes a snap value judgement based on Snape’s poverty and neglect, and the rest of the Marauders happily run with it for the next 7 years (and beyond).  They then spend the rest of their lives retrospectively justifying the indefensible - suggesting it was deserved because he was an oddball or dark or greasy or a Death Eater - when in reality, none of those elements were a factor in James’ decision making during that chance meeting at 11.  Make no mistake; this was always James’ battle, even if the others continued it long after his death.  

The rest of the Marauders at least have their own problems, whereas James demonstrates a terrifying lack of empathy, happy to ruin another child’s entire school career because of an instant dislike fuelled by appearance.  That would be horrifying enough, but it’s exacerbated by the fact that James enjoyed a great level of privilege and yet was unable to identify that Snape was already suffering greatly; it would’ve cost him nothing just to have kept away from him and to have left him alone, but that wasn’t good enough for James - Snape “existing” within his sphere was sufficient reason to ruin his life.

The analogy is simple - Hogwarts is the exclusive grammar school, and Snape is the kid who passes the 11+ entrance exam.  Despite earning his place on merit and ability, he’ll never fit in socially - and James does his damnedest to ensure that scenario plays out.  

(Which is why I have such a soft spot for Lucius Malfoy.  He holds awful beliefs, and it’s entirely possible that he had ulterior motives, but he had a similar social background to James - and instead of bullying Snape, he extended the hand of friendship, despite Snape’s obvious neglect.)

Seeing as my transman Snape post and my Severus-Regulus posts are the most liked on my blog and seeing that post where people are feeling the queer content has disappeared, I decided I can share more of my trans man Snape head canons (I have a lot because I fantasize about helping write the Marauder era TV show; it might almost make a fanfiction without the narrative voice).

I don’t have time today and I won’t promise any schedule or anything, but I will warn you that I do think that we avoid religion too much in media when it really has a lot to do with tensions and people’s lives so you will see things like Tobias Snape is a Catholic and blood purists are Anglican while the Regulus Black family is Jehovah's Witnesses. I think it adds a lot more conflict and interesting parallels.

Snape question of the day: what´s you weirdest/most random Snape headcanon.

He has a potion he has to take before leaving his rooms at Hogwarts. The potion makes any vulgar words you say more socially acceptable. So when he says ‘insufferable know it all’, he actually says something like, ‘damnable smart ass’. He gets to say what he really means and doesn’t have to hold back, or worry about ethics. In an AU where he survives I imagine he doesn’t take said potion anymore because he’s not a teacher, and when he and Harry start having conversations Snape’s colorful language startles Harry. Snape explains about the potion and Harry is like, “So…you’ve probably told me to ‘fuck off’ before, haven’t you?” And Snape replies, “that is least vulgar thing I’ve said to you.”
