🎵 Frank Sinatra — The World We Knew (Over and Over)
Movie Snape is an elegant, angry black cat and book Snape is a raven that's trying to steal your chips.
Lucius: My dear, I’m afraid we cannot mansplain manipulate manwhore our way out of this.
Snape[pulls out knife]: Manslaughter it is.

“Revenge”
The whole “Snape only wanted revenge” argument is so strange. Not only does it ignore crucial pieces of info from canon (like the fact that Snape defected before the attack on the Potters, or that being successful in his role meant that Voldemort would likely never even know Snape was working to bring him down), but it also relies on reading Snape as aggressive and on the offensive. Which is… strange. I mean, just look at the magic associated with him. There is a reason that Snape’s magic is primarily defensive (e.g. expelliarmus, occlumency, countering dark curses, antidotes), not offensive.
Severus was not a revengeful person. He was a justice person. People often mix that up, thinking he wanted revenge.
(For the same crime)
Sirius and Remus wanted revenge. Severus wanted justice.
Sirius and Remus wanted revenge on Peter for betraying the Potters, they wanted to kill him in cold blood.
[Shall we kill him together? Yes, I think so.]
[Black and Lupin stood shoulder to shoulder, wands raised. ‘You should have realised,’ said Lupin quietly. ‘If Voldemort didn’t kill you, we would. Goodbye, Peter.’]
I find that one of the most unnerving lines, sends a shiver down my spine every time i read it - It reminds me of Voldemort in many ways. And the ‘Goodbye, Peter’ it’s chilling, scary as fuck that Remus could be that cold.
They do this in front of 3 innocent 13 yr old
[Hermione covered her face with her hands and turned to the wall.
‘NO!’ Harry yelled. He ran forwards, placing himself in front of Pettigrew, facing the wands. ‘You can’t kill him,’ he said breathlessly. ‘You can’t.’
Black and Lupin both looked staggered].
[‘Harry, this piece of vermin is the reason you have no parents,’ Black snarled. ‘This cringing bit of filth would have seen you die, too, without turning a hair. You heard him. His own stinking skin meant more to him than your whole family.’]
The only reason they didn’t was because one of said 13 year olds did the thing the men should have done -
[‘I know,’ Harry panted. ‘We’ll take him up to the castle. We’ll hand him over to the Dementors. He can go to Azkaban … just don’t kill him.’]
[‘I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing it because I don’t reckon my dad would’ve wanted his best friends to become killers – just for you.’]
Severus, on the other hand, it was about justice, just like Harry. How Sirius was with Peter was how Severus was with Sirius. He thought he had been the one to betray the Potters and kill all those Muggles plus Peter - and Remus was his helper.
[‘I’ve told the Headmaster again and again that you’ve been helping your old friend Black into the castle, Lupin, and here’s the proof. Not even I dreamed you would have the nerve to use this old place as your hideout –’]
[‘Two more for Azkaban tonight,’ said Snape, his eyes now gleaming fanatically. ‘I shall be interested to see how Dumbledore takes this … he was quite convinced you were harmless, you know, Lupin … a tame werewolf …’]
[‘Up to the castle?’ said Snape silkily. ‘I don’t think we need to go that far. All I have to do is call the Dementors once we get out of the Willow. They’ll be very pleased to see you, Black … pleased enough to give you a little kiss, I daresay …’]
Thats all it is, a threat. Because we know he didn’t do that.
The ‘small’ difference between Sirius and Severus.
It isn’t how we treat our enemies when we face them, it’s how we treat them when they’re at our mercy.
When Severus was at the mercy of Sirius (In front of 3 teenagers, a werewolf and a rat):
[Next came Professor Snape, drifting creepily along, his toes hitting each stair as they descended, held up by his own wand, which was being pointed at him by Sirius. Harry and Hermione brought up the rear. Getting back into the tunnel was difficult. Lupin, Pettigrew. Harry went right after Sirius, who was still making Snape drift along ahead of them; he kept bumping his lolling head on the low ceiling. Harry had the impression Sirius was making no effort to prevent this.]
[Snape’s head was scraping the ceiling but Sirius didn’t seem to care.]
However, when Sirius was at Severus’s mercy, Severus who still believed Sirius was guilty of betraying the Potters, who had killed 12 Muggles and Peter; plus he had murderous tendencies at 16, and he did not act innocent, as Dumbledore says:
[‘Sirius has not acted like an innocent man. The attack on the Fat Lady – entering Gryffindor Tower with a knife.’]
Severus (A moment when he thought he was wholly alone):
[Together they peered around the bush at the other bank. Snape had regained consciousness. He was conjuring stretchers and lifting the limp forms of Harry, Hermione and Black onto them. A fourth stretcher, no doubt bearing Ron, was already floating at his side. Then, wand held out in front of him, he moved them away towards the castle.]
If Severus was all about revenge, then he would have let the Dementors get Sirius there and then - he had the power to do so after all. Or he could have killed him and say that after that Sirius was about to attack and kill Potter or himself, and Severus would have, in the eyes of Fudge, been correct to do so - Sirius was a serial killing, prison escapee lunatic after all. But he didn’t he floated him up to the castle.

Severus Snape, reverse Lady of the Lake: distributing legendary swords by chucking them into lakes
Severus Snape is a Teacher
snape: caffeine no longer keeps me awake while i work, so instead i have minerva periodically send me texts saying "we need to talk"
snape: it gives me the right about of adrenaline and fear to keep going.
everyone says that snape only did what he did for lily therefore he is not a good person, and i would like to remind everyone that one of the biggest parts of snape's arc was him changing his raison d'etre. he's not doing it for lily, but for everyone else.
the one thing that snape needed to do to redeem himself and for her honour was to keep harry potter alive, safe from the enemy. but harry is a horcrux and horcruxes need to be destroyed in order to defeat the ultimate evil.
when severus tells dumbledore his patronus, that scene boils down to him saying "but she's my heart. i've been able to do all of this because of her." but he has to let it go. it's not for her anymore, it can't be, he has to go directly against his own hearts desires, own terrible guuit because it's bigger than that now. it's for the wizarding world. it's why he rips the photo and keeps her side. why he weeps on the floor. because it's all been for her but that's not enough anymore.
so i believe that snape was ultimately a good person. because he put aside his own personal wishes and kept pressing forward for the greater good, trying to save EVERYONE. the order, remus, harry, ron, hermione, neville, ginny, luna, the castle, everyone. all at the cost of his own life. and moreover, the last image we ever see of snape is him leaving dumbledore's office with the sword of gryffindor. the moment he shares his patronus with harry, the only person to share any part of harry's mother with him, the most neglected parent over the entire series, in order to give him strength, courage and valour, the things he needed to get the sword. and when he dies, he tells harry to take them. take the memories and essence of who lily was. a bold and brazen girl, who was not afraid to speak her mind. sound like anyone?
and he looks into his eyes. and lets lily go. and his life go. giving literally his all, to save the wizarding world.
so yes, snape is a good person.
I agree with everything.
Severus is not the love he had for Lily.
We must try to release him from his "Always".
He changed because he RECOGNIZED that he was on the wrong path, Lily his teenage love, was the initial push.
Considering he was a young man of 21 at the time.
Lily and the Patronus represents his desire to redeem himself and his guilt to atone.
It is an oath he made with himself.
He has dedicated his whole life to it, and his strength of love and courage is touching.
Snape is a multifaceted character, a beautifully human gray-hued hero with his strengths and flaws.
Can we identify with Snape?
Yes for some things like his terrible childhood, the bullying he received, and so much more....
But let us remember that he lived every single moment of his existence with the risk of being discovered by the most powerful dark wizard while always maintaining a cool and clear mind.
A rare and unique ability.
