she isn’t a smoker, i watched a documentary about the photographer, this is her daughter and she always would take photos of her children and she thought of how out of place yet powerful the cigarette would look in her hands so she took this photo

i’m pretty sure the supposed smoke in her hand is just a lolly, hence the name of the photograph “candy cigarette.” sally mann (the photographer) sends off a particular message to parents of young, impressionable children. she tells parents that children today are becoming “grown-up” sooner than ever before. she is obviously trying to act older, and cooler. she does not appear to be a typical little kid. rather than looking like a care-free, happy-go-lucky child, this girl appears to be preoccupied, stressed, and perhaps, hopeless.
