“Check out this cool thing I got.” Augustus rolled up his dirty pant leg to show the other the deep gash around his ankle that was covered in dried blood, now slowly healing but still very red. “You know they put bear traps out in the woods now?”
What are you twelve?” Aisling scrunched her nose in disgust. “God that’s absolutely mank. Put that thing away. Christ on a cracker, how’d you even manage that.”
“The plan will continue on, take care of any issues that may arise,” Ehren’s voice said sternly over the phone, sighing as he hung up. He adjusted his suit jacket after he slipped the phone into his pocket, turning behind him to look expectantly at the person that was there. “I’m sorry, terribly rude to talk on the phone when in company.”
“Oh no don’t let me be an obstruction. I’m all about being rude, it’s kind of my thing.” Every word was pointed with the sharp sting of sarcasm. Aisling tossed her golden hair behind her head, her brows pointed in expectancy. “Come on old man surely there’s something you tell me about. This paper isn’t going to write itself.”
She had been running. Considering the fact she was on the soccer, one would think that she would be more coordinated; but no. “Ah fuck,” she cursed, knowing instantly that she had twisted her ankle in trying to run away from the noise she had heard. It was dark, it was scary and she was in the forest. Yeah, she was that smart. The snapping of a stick cracking under the weight of something echoed throughout the almost silent forest, and she froze. “Who’s there?” Her voice was no longer filled with happiness it usually had, but terror and cautiousness.
Aisling had no reason to be in the forest really. The crisp air served as a tool to help clear her head when her brain fixed to become especially morbid. Now standing lonely in the barren forest she wished she had brought a coat. She knew that wouldn’t fix anything, she could never escape the bitter cold. Not in the heat of summers or springs, not since her parents death. Her throat felt dry and cracked, trapping screams that had been choked back for years. How badly she wanted to just let go, to scream until windows broke and eardrums burst and she was surrounded by death, rightfully so. But she wouldn’t let herself, she wouldn’t let the weight of another death settle on her. “You seem to have yourself in tight spot.” She said, the soft chuckle of her tone undeniable.
“what are you— stop, god, what are you doing— don’t do THAT.” and here he had been thinking that he had seen it all. obviously he hadn’t.
“don’t be such wee little baby.” aisling said, with a montonous roll of eyes. she snapped her flask closed and pulled it away from her coffee with a sigh. “i don’t care what americans say. if i’m old enough to drink in ireland i’m old enough to drink here please and thank you.”
“I know you’d probably like to think that, but no. Sadly, you can’t be right all the fucking time. That’s not how the world works.”
“Really? That’s how Ireland works.”
“That’s terribly rude of you to say,” he said, not enjoying the tone in which she was speaking. “I don’t know why you are being so aggressive, but I would appreciate it if you didn’t hold that tone with me.” It was starting to frustrate him that she was speaking to him as if he were someone who couldn’t comprehend life. It wasn’t as though he had died and he also didn’t feel compelled to tell her that the turtle was also living and breathing.
“yeah and i’d appreciate a lot of bloody things. i’d appreciate if my parents were alive. i’d appreciate not living with regret for seven arseways years of my life. i’d appreciate if you get get it through your thick skull that you’re more important than a fucking turtle.” her chest heaved solemnly and as someone who rarely spoke in such a serious manner she could feel the weight of her words settling on her.
“ Oh but Ireland is so nice I’m sure. I bet the leprechauns, selkies and Fairy Queen all miss you dearly. And as much as I’d love to go to Ireland, I don’t I shall. “
“don’t forget about the pookas and changelings.”
“ Why do my brothers always feel necessary to scare the daylights out of me when they’ve been gone for a couple days? I swear, one day I’m going to accidentally stab them with a fork one day. “
“Ah, senseless violence. The choice drink of Americans everywhere.”
“You know what? I think you might be right about that.”
“Aren’t I always?”
“ The attitude runs in the family. You should hear us when we get into it with one another. And, you could always put your rent towards an apartment elsewhere if you wanted. “
“Afraid i’ll be sticking around here, terrible fate I know. But I've no intentions of going to back Ireland any time soon. But hey, maybe you should give it a try, you’re a redhead, fit right it.”
“I meant I misinterpreted what you said.”
“Ah see, now I’m a little more educated. The wonders of the modern world.”
“I thought humans were animals,” Oisin said, blinking dumbly at her. He was sure that a documentary he was watching said that humans were a species of animal. Maybe he was wrong, knowing that there was a chance that humans weren’t an animal. He hoped that didn’t blow his cover of not being a normal person. “He wasn’t just a turtle. He was just as important as you or me. I don’t know why you don’t realise this,” he said.
“Because it was a fucking turtle. Okay, it was a turtle. You’re a person a living breathing person and was nowhere near as important.” Aisling was quite aware she was being a selfish prick and that the words she were saying were wholly untrue but she needed to be selfish again just for a moment. She needed Oisin to understand the importance of what she was saying. So that maybe, she wouldn’t have to scream once more.
If you could spend your day with anyone, who would it be and why?
“Again I’m gonna go with my parents. I’d give anything to spend a little more time with them.”
why do you want to fight augustus so bad?
“We disagree on the matter of government mind control. We’re both very passionate.”
the last time you cried?
“At my parent’s funeral. I found that me crying normally results in screaming, which doesn’t end well.”
