#aughost Day 2: Tōdaiki Tōdaiki are believed to be the spirits of lost loved ones that have been turned in to magical lamps through the use of dark magic. Long ago, during a period of great movement of culture and ideas between China and Japan, a government minister was sent on a diplomatic mission to Tang China. He never returned, and his family in Japan, including his young son, Hitsu no Saishō, were left not knowing whether he was alive or dead. Many years later, when Hitsu no Saishō was an adult, he traveled to China to search for news of his missing father’s whereabouts. He traveled far and wide, and in a particular location he came across something he had never seen before: a candlestick fashioned out of a living human being! The man had been installed like a piece of furniture onto a fancy platform, and a large candle had been affixed to his head. Every inch of his body was covered in strange tattoos. And by some combination of strange drugs and sorcery, the man’s throat had been blocked up and ability to speak had been removed. As Hitsu no Saishō looked in amazement at the strange creation, the tōdaiki began to shed tears. Unable to speak, the man bit hard into his finger tip until it began to bleed. Then, using his finger, he wrote out a poem in his blood: Long ago I came to China from Japan. I have the same family name as you. The bond between father and son transcends even the seas and mountains that have separated us. For years I have cried in this horrible place. Every day I think of my parents. I have been transformed into this candlestick in this faraway land. I just want to go home. Upon reading this, Hitsu no Saishō realized in horror that the tōdaiki was his own father whom he had come to China looking for! #aughost2020 #penart #yokai #myart #sketchbook #illustration #art (at Woodstock, Western Cape, South Africa) https://www.instagram.com/p/CDZfbReHeoO/?igshid=1xe75k508zsdb

Summary of Norman’s “The Design of Everyday Things”
“The secret to success is to understand what the real problem is”
Norman explains in his book that finding problems is much harder than it may seem and states that “The real world is not like university”. He elaborates on how professors make up artificial problems with predetermined answers and states how, in the real world, problems need to be discovered past the surface level by looking deeper in order to address real issues.
Norman states how engineers and business people solve issues! While designers discover the “important” ones.
He stresses the idea of not jumping to the conclusion of a stated problem.
He rather opts to find the solutions that fit human ‘desires, needs and capabilities through what he terms ‘human centered design’.
This is achieved through Observation, generation, prototyping and testing.
Norman elaborates in great detail on the concept of the ‘Double Diamond’ and how we can use it expand the scope of the problem in order to find the appropriate solution.
The first diamon encapsulating the diverging concept of Discovering and Defining the problem, ultimately converging in what he deems would be the ‘right problem’.
After the first convergence, the problem diverges again but this time with the aim to ‘Develop and Deliver’. This frees the designer from unnecessary restrictions to the problem.
Norman then further elaborates on the four step process of human-centered-design.
-Observation-
Understanding the nature of the problem by observing the consumers and understanding what their basic desires are. Acknowledging how they interact with things around them.
-Generation of Ideas-
Avoid becoming fixated on one idea by bombarding yourself with ideas. This involves questioning every aspect of the problem without becoming afraid of creating new ideas.
-Prototyping-
This involves testing potential solutions by building prototypes. Prototypes rely on understanding your preobserved human activities in depth in order to ensure that the problem is understood.
-Testing-
Have a research team observe a selected group of people utilizing the prototype. Use these observations to question the groups thought process regarding the prototype.
ITERATION - REPEAT - REFINE - ENHANCE
After sufficient testing and enhancement has occurred, a product manager will decide when the process should end.
Summary of Howe’s “Designers don’t have Influencers”
Corita was both a nun and an artist that lived in Los Angeles.
She was known for her optimistic outlook applied within her art classes. This outlook went on to inspire her students and followers.
Corita has a few very simple rules that she taught her students that drove said inspiration. Namely: ‘work hard’, ‘don’t be afraid’ and finally ‘Stay inspired’.
She instilled these basic rules in order to instill an open-mindedness and curiosity towards all texts within her students.
Focusing rather on shapes, Corita emphasized starting projects that were not content driven.
WHATS IN THE WAY
When considering what holds me back from being brave, curious and flexible I will always look to my self esteem and self confidence as my Achilles heel. I currently struggle with performance anxiety that usually results in me not doing anything in fear of doing it wrong. Even if Im so sure of what I’m about to do, I will still question how much I know about what it is I’m doing.
Weirdly enough, pushing myself creatively is what helps me push past those anxieties and forget that they exist and what control they have over me. Being creative insights me to push myself past what I believe I know.
Summary of ‘Wired to Care’
Pattie Moore was a designer who took her brainstorming and personas to an extreme. She morphs her body to be old and fragile in order to gain a better understanding of her target audience.
She recognised that both older people and people with disablities had little to no accessories/equipment designed specifically for them. Outraged by how unwelcoming and inconsiderate the world was to these people, Pattie then set out to change this issue.
Pattie began looking for design flaws in the objects around her. She based her arguments on the basis that being old/disabled wasn’t the problem but rather that the objects design was flawed in itself. She gives the example of a door being too hard to open for an elderly person, stating that door was then poorly designed.
Pattie taught designers and people alike that empathy is particularly crucial in establishing a better connection with ones audience. This translates further to designers/ marketing institution as it ultimately enables them to sell a product better.
Pattie emphasized that if products or institutions didn’t empathize or sympathize with their consumers, then the consumer becomes isolated - almost an empty vessel to sell a product to.
In that instance, progression is suppressed or ultimately results in failure.
She emphasizes reflecting what you see in order to gain more empathy and uses Harley-Davidson as an example. She notes how they utilize memorabilia and nostalgia factors of their consumer base in order to paint a reflection of the riders - making them feel more connected to the brand.
Pattie also uses a doll maker named Gina as an example of ‘stepping out of yourself’. Gina, although an adult, makes dolls for young girls by leaving her own agendas behind while simultaneously thinking like and keeping the childlike nievity of a young girl.
“If you want people to be interested in you, you should be genuinely interested in other people.”
Task 2: De Bono’s Six Thinking Hats Applied.
Regarding our project of solving the issue of traffic in Cape Town, Manon, Tia and I utilized de Bono’s Six thinking hats method and came to the conclusion that improved train systems were the solution, however, the process seemed scattered at first. This was due to it being our first time utilizing the method. The process was interesting, we found that the blue hat made us apprehensive as we weren’t proficient in this way of planning, yet once we truly indulged ourselves in the blueness of our hat we managed to find a decent procedure. The colour process we selected was blue, white, green, black, yellow and lastly red : the most misbehaved of the hats was red, red because we had little idea of how it would benefit our solving of the issue given. However that does not mean it would be a troublesome hat for future projects, just specifically regarding this one we felt it was irrelevant. The most thrilling hat was green, as no judgment was thrown, liberating us to blurt out whatever we felt and giving us the ability to bounce off from one idea to the other, until of course the black hat came along.Although the black hat seems pessimistic it was the most beneficial of all as we could really scrutinize the issues and disregard ones that were irrelevant, we did discover that we needed to jump back to the black hat every now and then as we found problems as we went along - therefore it creating a complication concerning us to revert our attention back and forth. Overall De Bono’s process was fun and will without a doubt make the working environment easier as we did not experience any conflicts due to thinking on similar terms, therefore we operated better as a team speeding up the process by finding it easier to agree amongst one another.
