Makeup Artist is a profession, just like a plumber, lawyer, chef, etc. Unfortunately, the title of our profession contains the word ARTIST and has created much confusion over what an actual, professional makeup artist is. People equate the term ARTIST with ART and use "artistry" as an excuse to label non-professionals and hobbyists as Makeup Artists. This is an INCORRECT use (abuse) of the title Professional Makeup Artist. You may use makeup application as your creative outlet, much like painting, using your face as the canvas, Many people on YouTube and Instagram have turned this practice into their ART form. But applying makeup to yourself, to express your creativity, or monetize your channel, does not make you a professional makeup artist. COLD HARD FACT: A professional makeup artist is a person PAID to apply makeup, TO OTHER PEOPLE, as one of their primary sources of income. It is their PROFESSION - hence the term PROFESSIONAL. LET ME MAKE THIS EASIER: I was a national debate champion and worked on Law & Order (as an MUA). I can undoubtedly present an "argument" factually and intelligently. Am I, therefore, allowed to call myself a lawyer? Of course not. LAWYER is a profession where you must train and gain experience before you charge people $$$ for your ability to argue their case. #MyTwoCents I'm not hating on anyone's' hustle. Sit in front of the camera, beat your face to perfection, and cash in on the affiliates and sponsors - just don't call yourself a MAKEUP ARTIST, that's my PROFESSION.
