Okay it’s silly to even be indulging this part of the discussion but TO ME in MY headcanon I think both Jonathan and Nancy do want kids (not 6 of them. Perhaps 2.) And while no, this is never something we see onscreen, I do feel it can be reasonably supported in the text based off of what we see in season 4.
Jonathan and Nancy have clearly had a discussion about their future. Yes, they are still high-schoolers but they are serious about one another and have experience a hell of a lot of life together. The show has shown them being emotionally vulnerable and having deep conversations with one another time and time again. And they have obviously, canonically, discussed going to college together! As a result of this, I do not think it’s super far-fetched to suggest they also spoke about their future together in terms of eventual marriage and children.
When Jonathan is freaking about his future kids hating him, he is also freaking about Emerson, and how he hasn’t applied, like Nancy thinks he has, due his own presumed obligation to his family. I personally think this all tied together. Jonathan’s fears go much deeper than college. They have discussed a real future together, kids and all, and now it’s freaking Jonathan the fuck out because he thinks he’s both holding Nancy back and that he will never be able to measure up to that future they have planned together, which he does want, but doesn’t feel he can grab a hold of. Because Jonathan doesn’t think his own dreams matter in the grand scheme of things!
Which is all to say, I do think Jonathan and Nancy have discussed kids. I do think they want a family together. And when I say “Steve and Nancy don’t want the same things” I don’t mean “Steve wants kids and Nancy doesn’t” I mean, “I think Nancy wants a future where establishing her career is her (and her partner with his respective career) first priority, and she wants to leave Hawkins and establish that career in a place very different from Hawkins. But I do not think she doesn’t want to get married and yes, eventually (like, in her mid-late 30s) start a family. I just think she wants that in a way that is very different from the life her mother has had, in marrying straight out of high school, becoming a stay-at-home mother, and never leaving her home town.”
