Mephisto finds himself thinking the boy’s response to the question every so slightly disappointing. For months now he had gotten used to (and rather fond of) Rin almost always acting out in some big show near every time the King opened his mouth around him. Though annoying at times, it wouldn’t exactly be a stretch of the imagination to say such times were often the highlight of his day; plucking touchy nerves here and there, and enjoying the show that ensued.

Does he really expect to just be handed all the answers? Just like that? How has he not come to understand a life like his was never meant to be that easy? Shaking his head, the demon offers a half-hearted chuckle as a first response. “But that’s half the fun. Besides, you’ve done moderately well enough so far, so why should I stop now?”

Rin drops his head into his hands after a beat, a loud, annoyed groan escaping his trachea. God, he feels like his frustration is going to make him cry. He can feel his head start to throb, a sensation he’s starting to associate with top hats, the color purple, and snide grins. He drags his hands down his face, and wipes his eyes.

Just what possesses someone to say something like that? The worst part about being right is that he’s often right about the worst things. He doesn’t get what’s so fun about going out of your way to make someone’s life just that much harder. “You’re sick. Is the other half the fun seeing my allowance go to painkillers?”

There something about the tone...

Every word that comes out of Mephisto’s mouth is an irritant. As if the Demon Lord’s actual domain wasn’t Space or Time but rather Being the Most Grating Thing in the room. Every word is engineered with an almost divine purpose to grate on an already fraying psyche. Maybe this is his game? Belittle and demean until Rin just can’t take it anymore?
