I can't think of too many women who inspire me more than #ZoraNealeHurston. Your favorite author's favorite author. She was the most prolific writer of her time. #Howard Alum, and later the sole Black student at #Barnard College during a time when few Black people had even a grade school education. She largely went unnoticed during her life and died poor, largely derailed by many of her Black male writer counterparts because they felt she didn't write enough about "the race problem." Oh the audacity to be a Black woman with something to say that does not appease the male ego...blasphemy. "With little to guide her, except fidelity to her own experience, she documented the survival of love, loyalty, joy, humor and affirmation, as well as tragedy in black life. What did it mean for a black woman to be an artist in our grandmother’s time? It is a question with an answer cruel enough to stop the blood. The answer is shown in the life of Zora Neale Hurston. It meant that she would have to work with little hope of triumph. And yet, she did work. In poverty, and ill-health, dogged by an undeserved scandal, and without the support of any academic or intellectual community, What she left us is only a fraction of what she might have accomplished. She doesn't have a mouth...yet. This is a work in progress. My apple pencil died on me, lol. Trying out the #Astropad app in #photoshop for the first time. It's taking some getting used to, but I'm still most comfortable analog, with paper and pencil or either with my cheap Wacom bamboo.
