Treading Water
Another wave crashes against my back, breaking and buffeting me, but my body creates a barrier and the wave moves around her, I breathe in the salt water and almost choke, spitting it out just as she is able to gasp in the sweet air
She's not the best swimmer, and my legs ache as I tread water, pain coursing through my nerves before the numbness sets in
There's a brief lull and I feel the current dragging us out, knowing another wave will crash soon
This one soars over my head, I dip underwater for a moment, enveloped in the darkness, before I break through again, sun on my skin
I see that water splashed on her face, and I curse myself for not stopping it all, for letting even one drop hit her, for letting even the smallest grain of sand get caught in her eye, and as the salt stings at the corner I see a tear roll down
I kick up harder, holding her above the water, pushing my body even higher so the next wave will hit me instead of her
Better, I have to be better
In my hands is a treasure, lost at sea for so long, so precious, so perfect
Better than chests filled with Spanish gold, or diamonds and gems lost to the depths, more valuable than all the pearls pulled from the bottom, more wonderful than all the treasures that drove men to lead a life of piracy on the seas, far more beautiful than the crowns and jewels worn by those that commanded privateers to do the same
She is my love, and I will carry her to shore, and cherish her for the rest of my days
