today is Jim Morrison's birthday. let us pause for a moment and reflect upon a man who ruined music forever.
to celebrate, I decided to do an experiment.
I searched tumblelogs which had at least one The Doors item on first page; bonus points for any vintage'y paraphernalia like Bob Dylan's photos.
each time I asked the owner one simple question: 'why the old stuff?'
I was truly interested as to why we as a culture still listen to same boring old shit. I hoped for an enlightenment.
instead, I got these top 5 answers:
5."Well, I'm a fan of classic rock"
always written so proudly and seriously, as if there ever was something such as 'classic rock'. If you put into one category The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pearl Jam and pretty soon My Chemical Romance and Katy Perry, you're probably deaf.
4. "Oh, it's not me, it's from a tv ad X, show Y, cover band Z"
this is why our society need fascist copyright laws, with extra-long prison sentences: if anyone dares to do a bad cover of a bad song, then s/he should spend some time with Bubba. here's a guy ready and willing to teach this new generation of shitty artists how to hit really high notes.
3. "Jim Morrison was a great artist, you know, like Rimbaud"
Rimbaud revolutionised poetry, vagabonded through Europe and lived through a tumultuous love affair with Verlaine (10 years his senior), all by the age of seventeen. also, when hitting 20 he proclaimed 'fuck it' and never wrote another poem again. I don't think you can compare anyone to this truly magnificent bastard. his life was one of passion, not of dying in a bathtub like a drug junkie.
2. "I didn't know they were considered old"
then you are either:
a)too young for Internet (it's risky out there! for one, people can question your taste...)
b)so old you probably remember the first Woodstock. oh wait. rather you did go there, but somehow failed to remember anything at all. hey, those were the times, eh, grandpa?
1. "Everything was so much better back then!"
go kill yourself.
