  Sam’s insides started to burn, and before he knew what he was doing he crossed Desmond’s kitchen and pulled the taller man into a tight hug.

  “I’m…. glad you got your happily ever after. Even if it’s not… exactly how you thought it would be.”

Al’s low smile twitched at the sudden contact, but he returned the unexpected but... not unwelcome embrace. placing his hands gently on either side of Scudder’s soft head.

   “I’m sorry you never got yours.”

  Sam felt like he should have-  winced or something. But he didn’t. The confirmation hurt of course, but they both knew it was true. So saying it out loud didn’t do much to undulate the dull ache in Scudder’s gut at the sight of him. Dead eyed and empty.

  He laughed again, staring down at his hands, it was quiet and hallow.

  “For what it’s worth…  I-”  his throat tightened a bit, “I’m… sorry…”

   Sam slipped off the counter and landed light on his feet, still looking down,  “I wish things were like they used to be.”

‘I don’t’

  That’s what Albert wanted to say... To say he’s happy like this. Satisfied. Putting himself in limbo. Gutting himself just not to feel.

But that would be dishonest. Even though it’s harder to express now how he is, deep down he wants things to be the way they were too. An Idealistic, Warm, Populated heyday when he could find comfort and joy in someone who wasn’t just a pitiful reflection of himself.

   “I’m sorry too.”

  Scudder folded his hands into his lap and swung his legs idly against the cupboards with a series of soft clunking sounds.

   “Well I miss you… I know you’re doing well- and you’re… Well you’re right here- you’ve always been…here… But I-”  He smirked ruefully and let his head fall to one side, “I guess that was never… good enough huh- that’s why you did this to yourself….”

  Albert spent a longer than necessary time folding a hand towel into a neat square before putting it away in the drawer.

   “...You’re correct.”

Sam leaned out the kitchen window and crawled out onto the counter without his usual bounce or fanciful landing. Just sat his bony rear on the edge of the sink and leveled his gaze at Albert, “Are you still broken?”

“I haven’t found a reason not to be, so yes.” He smiled softly, returning the Mirror Master’s stare with an equally subdued one of his own.

Julian just watches Al for a few seconds, looking around the room at all the reminders that he has put around the house. He’s not stupid, he’d noticed something was off since the beginning, but just waved it off as Al needing to recover.

He lets out a sigh after a few quiet minutes of processing things and gives him a small smile. “I’m not mad you did this. I get why. Alvin’s nothing like Alchemy ended up being and you just wanted to make sure once and for all he wouldn’t come out again. I’m not going to lie that I’m not upset, but that’s only cause I worry about you. A lot.” He moves to sit next to him.

“I do hope you’ll try and fix it one day. I’d be glad to help if that day ever comes. But for now you’re still Albert. You’re just a bit different now.” 

Albert wasn’t sure how to respond to all that. It was good at least that Julian wasn’t angry.

   “It won’t be as different. Most of what I lost hasn’t got any value to you or Wally.” 

   “You don’t have to worry about me any more.”

"So from what Alchemy has told me, sorry he over heard you with Wally and Sam earlier, the reason you've been just a wee bit off lately is you turned off your amygdala?"

“It was just the Flash.”

  “I purposefully damaged it, that is correct.”

“Oh thanks.  Did you want to chat longer?  I know I kind of showed up unannounced.  If you’d rather I leave then you can say so.”  Wally took another glance around at Al’s many self reminders.  He made a mental note to check in more often now.

“That’s something you’ll have to do more now I think.  Be honest with people.  You’re harder to read now so it might help them transition to this new you.”

“If you want. I don’t care.” He poured the hot water and did the same for himself.

    “I think that’s unwise. Sam was going to do something very dangerous in order to fix me. I heard him talking to my son about it. If I hadn’t lied to him, then he would likely be doing it as we speak.”

   Albert turned and looked at the kitchen window. That is, if the Mirror Master wasn’t here right now.

Wally looked down at his cup, spinning it gently.  

“That’s a big life choice.”  

He could understand where someone like Sam would be furious about this.  It would certainly take some getting used to.  But what Al did…Wally didn’t know many people quite that selfless.  

“The important thing though is that everyone is alive and okay.  They’ll come around.  They’ll see that what you did was out of love.  I don’t know all the ins and outs of it and I won’t pretend to.  But if you need someone on your side…don’t feel like you can’t ask.  I uh..I haven’t really been there for you like I should have over the years.”

He ran a hand through his hair as a nervous habit.  

“I hope to change that.”

“You’re right, that is the most important thing.”

  Albert finished his drink and set down his cup with a muted tap.

  “I doubt it will be necessary now.”  His eyes drifted off to one side. Should he say thank you? 

  Instead of dwelling on it, he picked up the tea pot and offered it to Wally, “More tea?”

“It’s hard for people to see someone they care about sacrifice anything.  It hurts to watch because you feel like you should have shared their burden.”  

Wally glanced around at the notes and finally back towards the alchemist.  “I think you made a brave choice though, like I said.  Can you reverse it if you want?  Clearly you still have your powers.  Will you let yourself gradually have some more emotional freedom as you get used to things?”

Al thought back to the abject horror painted across Sam’s face when he first discovered- and then a similar expression on his son’s. Disgust. Fear. Anger.

   “You may be right, but I don’t think so.” A soft smile. 

  “But It’s difficult for me to tell now for certain.” luckily empathy was something that was easy enough to fake. To someone as generally educated as he was... But it wasn’t perfect.

   “I don’t know if I can change myself back. It’s easier to break things than it is to mend them, especially biological things. If Scudder told you that I said I could change myself back any time, that was a partial lie. I’m only capable of trying.”

  “I’m not a neurosurgeon.”  He took another drink, “Not that it matters, I don’t ever plan to try.”

Wally stared down at his tea as it steeped.  

“So you feel…nothing?  That’s…” He looked up at Albert with a sympathetic expression.  “That’s actually really brave of you.  I can’t imagine that your family took it very well though.”

“I was afraid, but I should have done it ages ago.”  He set his cup down, “I have to make... notes reminding myself to do simple things- but I’m adapting.”

  He motioned to the myriad of stickies posted around on the walls. They said things like ‘Eat’, ‘Sleep’, and ‘Shower’. 

  “My son hasn’t taken it well, no. But he will get used to it.”

Wally’s eyebrows knit together slightly as he watched Al but he didn’t say anything just yet.  Instead, he picked out some tea and a cup then sat down at the table.  

“Thank you.”

“So you seem…different.  I don’t mean to be rude or anything but I’m sure you know that there’s a difference.”

“Yes, I’m different.”

   After waiting for Wally to get tea, Albert got himself a cup and sat down opposite of the speedster.

  “I made some alterations to my...” He thought for a moment. How to posit this so there wasn’t another fiasco.  “....Amygdala.” 

   He sipped his drink, “After the troubling situation with Alvin, I thought it was time to take some.... measures.”

Definitely unexpected.   Wally shut the door behind himself and followed Al into the kitchen.

“You seem to be in a good mood.  I don’t know if it means a lot coming from me but we’re all pretty glad you’re back.  I should have come by earlier.  Sorry about that.”

   “It’s fine, you’re very busy.” For Al, it was a matter of waving one’s hand before the water was hot enough. And the teapot was presented to the Flash on an oven-mitt set upon the table. Albert motioned to the hanging cups and the little cabinet of assorted tea-tins.

  “Help yourself...”

Well that was the last thing he expected. “Oh. Good evening. I just wanted to come by and check up on you and yours…if that’s okay?”

The Doctor stepped aside and made his way to the kitchen, “Yes of course. Come in, I’ll make tea....”

Wally took a deep breath, trying to ready himself before knocking on the front door to the Desmond house. He had no idea what to expect. Al must be relieved to be back but the last time Wally knocked on this door he got burned.

  Albert put his last dish away in the cabinet and answered the door. It was the Flash, of course, he knew that before ever opening it. 

   “Good evening.”

Wally’s eyes widened more and more with every word.  Every instinct was telling him to get away.  Not that he thought Albert would hurt him.  It was just so…unsettling.  So wrong.

“W-why would you say you were h-horrible?  You’re the only…Albert I wouldn’t be h-here without you…You were th-the only one who cared….”  

His heart hurt and his eyes burned but there weren’t any tears left in him at this point.  Wally wished he could explain how he felt.  How Albert unintentionally hurt those around him by destroying himself.  How he never would have wished for this no matter how many hardships they went though.  How he wished they would have talked more about all this before things got to this point.

But the words just wouldn’t come.

“….I-…I’d like to go to bed now…”

“I’m just being honest... I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything..."  Albert put his hands down by his sides, staring at Wally’s distraught face.

“..... Alright.”

 “Good night, Wally.”
