Shane has a little ancestral altar set up in the corner of their bedroom with memorial tablets for his grandparents and a small statue of Kannon and he does his meditation in front of it, lighting the incense and ringing a small bell and then, when he's done with his meditation, often spends a few minutes talking to his grandparents, telling his grandmother about a bird or plant or bug he saw recently, because she loved nature and telling his grandfather a joke.

There are a few other things on the altar too; a picture of Shane's dog Lucky, who died when he was a teenager, some fruit and flower offerings, a Buddhist rosary that had belonged to Shane's grandmother. Ilya gets used to the altar being there and hardly ever looks at it, so he doesn't notice when Shane adds an extra picture.

But one day, when Shane has finished his meditation and Ilya is in the room looking for something he hears Shane say 'Ilya taught Anya to roll over and he is so pleased with himself he's been showing her off to everyone,' and then 'I'll take care of him for you, I promise'. When Shane has finished and wandered out of the bedroom, Ilya goes over and opens the little cupboard the altar is in and sees that Shane has put a copy of one of the only pictures Ilya has of his mother, the one where she's holding Ilya and smiling at the camera, on the altar beside his grandparents' tablets and he has to sit down and breathe deeply for a few minutes until he no longer feels like he's going to cry.

love the concept of cas just passively observing and enjoying sam and dean's normal days of just being brothers and friends having silly conversations ranking snacks discussing places to visit around july etc. and cas is now a participant too but enjoys being led by the brothers and just witnessing the life they carved for themselves like someone has to witness this ough,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
