Don’t get nosy, don’t get nosy, don’t ge- “Can you describe the incident in its entirity?” Damn. “If that question is too personal you may feel free not to answer,” she tacked on.
“Of course,” Zarina rolled her eyes. Of course it’d come to this. “I snuck into the school on scientific whims and accidentally, and I emphasise accidentally, ended up destroying the lab. I knew this was coming.”
“And can you describe that experience, and the level of competence you believe the police handled it with?”
“The police had me in, questioned me like I’d killed 3 people not just destroyed a science lab. I suppose it was handled well, aside from the angry questions.”
“I don’t know, I probably just look like the type, I guess.” Herc chuckled softly, glad for her understanding. “Oh, got it. Well, you should probably make time for other things, it’s not good to never do anything fun. Not that it has to be male related fun, just something you enjoy.”
“Definitely the type,” Zarina murmured, shaking her head ever so slightly. He was a local celebrity for a reason, but aside from his evident good looks, Zarina didn’t really see why everyone swooned over him. Or maybe it was just because she wasn’t in the mood for it. “That’d be great if I did actually have spare time to throw away. I’ve got cleaning and cooking to do, and I have to make a wage somehow.”
Still put off, Judy grabbed her questionnaire. “Question one. Have you had encounters with the CPD during your time in Carthay?”
“Yes I have.”
“Understood. I mean, that damsel, according to the dictionary, means young unmarried woman. No! No, I’m not. I mean not that you’d make a bad wife, or that marriage in general would suck, but that’s not at all where I was going with this conversation.” Herc was suddenly feeling very self conscious about the turn the topic had taken, and now he didn’t know what to do, or say. “I don’t blame you, for not giving men the time, I know we can be a pain sometimes.”
“Why am I not surprised you know the dictionary definition of a damsel?” Zarina sighed quietly, before shaking her head at the way the conversation had turned. “Oh don’t worry, I know what you meant. And no, it’s not the fact men are a pain, although you’re right. It’s that I literally don’t have time, I’m very busy.”
“I never thought it would come to the point where I want to sue Louboutin.”
“What’s Louboutin?”
“I agree. Learning is so much fun, but there has to be a better way of proving what you know.”
“I’d much rather do lots of presentations rather than exams, in all honesty.”
Judy raised a quizzical eyebrow. “The what incident? I just have a survey from the CPD about life in Carthay.”
“Oh, nothing. Yeah that’s fine, go ahead.”
The impending smirk stretches across his lips like taffy, his brown eyes still appraising the high rise and it’s fresh coat of paint. At the very least, she has a sense of humor, though her humdrum attitude leaves something to be desired. “I know this may sound like something from a cheesy hallmark card and I really hate to rain on your whole cynical parade - especially since I like to consider myself a fellow cynic. But if maybe, just maybe, it’s your perspective that needs to change and not the town.” Even before she has a proper chance to respond, he’s prepared for some sort of backlash, holding both his hands up in mock surrender. Still, he doesn’t regret saying it. It’s that sort of forward thinking that’s kept him in town as long as he’s been. Well, that and a certain someone that he’s not exactly at liberty to name.
Zarina raised an eyebrow at his words, crossing her arms as she tried to come up with the best way to reply. “It most definitely does sound like a cheesy card, something you send to someone when they’re down in the dumps. I think it’s a bit of both, probably. I’ve done a lot of changing though, but this town just seems to have...stagnated,” she explained before laughing at him holding his hands up. “It’s a fair enough view on things though, I just think it’s about both.”
“Sorry to bother,” Judy started, slightly out of breath from her jog to catch up with them. “I’m Officer Judy Hopps, with the CPD? Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”
“Sure...unless it’s about the lab incident, in which case I’m sick of being quizzed over it.”
— “Yeah I guess it is…,” Panic mumbled. He kind of liked Panic, just because it gave him an identity other than just Matthew, but he didn’t have much of an opinion either way. The decision wasn’t his to make.
He thought about it for a minute. No, it wasn’t healthy. But neither were the copious amounts of caffeine he drank or the junk food he ate. Or the line of work he was in, or the people he hung around with. Wait, could a person be healthy? Other than in a physical sense? He didn’t know.
“Guess not. But that’s what… it is, right?” He laughed nervously.
“I’ve never had a nickname, y’know? It’s quite difficult to shorten Zarina, and nobody really wanted to try, especially not any more. I always kinda wanted one...but at the same time, I like being Zarina too.”
“To be fair....nothing is really healthy any more. Anything you eat is full of sugar or fats or some other unhealthy substance. I try and avoid it, but it’s difficult.”
“I can’t wait for them to be over forever. It’s such an unnecessarily stressful time.”
“Oh definitely. It’s just awful, pure torture. I loved studying and learning, but hated finals.”
Hercules tried not to laugh, as he nodded once. “Got it, you’re a strong independent woman. Though, I didn’t see a ring, so damsel seemed fitting, but I shouldn’t have assumed; my apologies.”
“Definitely a strong independent woman. What do you mean, no ring? Wait...are you insinuating marriage? No thank you, no men for me. I haven’t got time for that.”
“Oh well then, I’m not sure what to say… I mean, I guess if people are going to treat you badly because of an accident, then they’re being the bad ones,” Rapunzel said with a bit of caution, suddenly wondering if she was choosing the right words to say, or trusting the right people. Usually she could go with her gut, but this town was full of colorful people with plenty of surprises, “Well hey, maybe we need to start from the bottom with jobs.”
“It’s a complicated situation, but people aren’t being too great. They weren’t to start with, that’s why I left. And I’m still getting looks,” Zarina explained, sighing. The new wing was open, and she’d payed off her debts, she didn’t see any reason for the attitudes towards her to still be bad. “Like...dishwashing, or something like that?”
“I’m saying you could’ve asked me. But I don’t know.” She shifted her weight, uncomfortable but not bothering (more like not even aware) that there were a million ways to follow-up what she’d just said to make it less harsh and she wasn’t doing a single one of them.
“What’s wrong with him? Be serious, Zarina. Everything.”
“You would have said no, and we both know it. And I didn’t want to anyway...and it doesn’t matter, I’ve got a place now, so who cares?” Zarina shrugged off the idea of living with Tinka, she didn’t want to anyway.
“There’s nothing wrong with him. You barely know him.”
“Oh it feels so good to leave the house and not have my nose stuck in a book. Finals, you will not be missed.”
“As much as I miss studying, I do not miss finals.”
Herc could tell she was trying to act tough, and he understood, but he was genuinely afraid she might drop something important if she wasn’t careful. Giving her his best smile, he shrugged before responding. “What’s better than helping a damsel in distress?”
Zarina paused at his words, turning to shoot him a look. “I’m not a damsel in distress. I can handle this, it’s just a few bags. Especially if you’re going to start calling me a damsel.”
