“Yep, all night long.” It hadn’t been quite so bad, eventually he stopped pacing the apartment and came to lay beside Tristan on Alec’s pillow. “Oh ho… there is no chance of that happening. He is a spoiled little prince.” He looked down with a bright smile to the little fluff ball. “And that’s how we like you, right?” 

“I know. I just don’t like to worry you… I worry about worrying you too much. Vicious cycle we got going here.” He squeezed Alec tightly. “Of course I missed you. Every day, every minute. I mean look at me. I obviously can’t function without you.” He chuckled as he ran his free hand through his unruly hair. 

“I wish I could say I’m not happy to hear that, but honestly I am. Listen, I know how important family is, but… well, they don’t deserve the title family. They treated you like you were property not family and I can’t have anyone in your life who would do that. I just can’t see you hurt like that.” 

Henrik seemed to meow in agreement to what Tristan said and Alec just shook his head. The little kitten was ridiculous but Tristan was right. Alec loved that he acted like a spoiled little prince. As Henrik walked over to Tristan’s lap Alec pulled Matty up into his. “You’re getting really big. Soon you won’t be able to sit on my lap.” He cooed as he pet the puppy’s head.

“It really is a vicious cycle. We’re pretty ridiculous with it but I don’t think either of us is going to stop worrying anytime soon. I thought you were just going for the scruffy look. Or maybe that you wanted to look more like a caveman. I wasn’t sure which one.” He grinned as he reached out to pet Tristan’s hair.

“I love you so much. I can’t believe how much you care and how great you are sometimes. Honestly I was so sad the entire time I was gone and the moment I saw you tonight I just couldn’t help but be happy. You’re turning me into a mushy marshmallow. Speaking of family though. Have you spoken to yours?”

Tristan could only chuckle at Alec’s defense of Henrik. The kitten was the apple of the Omega’s eye. “Oh, I should be nicer? He’s the one who kept me up last night meowing and crying for you.” He leaned in and kissed his nose. “But he is awfully cute.” 

“Nah, I’m not working too hard. You know I love my job and my gorgeous boyfriend wasn’t here so I figured my time was best spent at the station.” He winked. He knew that Alec worried and he didn’t want to cause that, but work was… work. “I’m okay. Promise.” He leaned back in the couch and pulled Alec close. “Even better now that you’re home.” 

“I know that you expect it. Doesn’t make it right. You know, if I ever meet them I’m going to have a very hard time not giving them a piece of my mind.” Hell, a piece of his mind was the best case scenario. “Ah, well that’s nice. Hope you got most of what you needed because I really don’t want you going back to those awful people any time soon.” 

“Aww he really was crying for me? Poor baby. I’m so sorry.” Alec held Henrik up to his face so he could press his nose against the kitten’s nose. “I promise I came back as soon as I could. You need to learn to be nicer too. Stop acting like a spoiled little prince all the time.”

“I know. It’s my job to worry about you though. I’m pretty much an expert worrier so you should just expect it.” He felt relieved as Tristan seemed so happy to see him. He had to admit that he had been a bit worried that Tristan wouldn’t miss him that much. “I’m glad that you’re happy about me being back. I wanted you to miss me. I hope that doesn’t sound horrible. I guess I just didn’t want you to be indifferent to my absence.”

“If you ever meet them I will die from a heart attack right on the spot. I have no plans for you to ever encounter them to be quite honest. Don’t take that as me not planning on having you in my life for very long though. I in fact intend to settle down with you but I don’t intend to see them again. I got all of the stuff that was still there.”

Tucker wanted to say a number of things. That the other wolf wasn’t good enough for Tristan, that he still blamed him for making the firefighter feel somehow inadequate, to the simple reasoning that he just didn’t like that Alec was the source of his embarrassment that night. But he wouldn’t cause Tristan grief so he kept his mouth shut. 

Especially because one insult had driven the guy to tears. 

“Didn’t you get the memo? I hate everyone…” 

“Sure you do Tucker. Have a good day.” Alec gave him another small smile before walking out the door. He wouldn’t stand there and argue with the other male. If Tucker wanted to hate him for as far as Alec was concerned no reason than he could. Alec didn’t have the time or energy to play stupid games with him.

“Only the ones Henrik gives me.” He side-eyed the kitten who was so sweetly twining his way between Alec’s legs. “I thought you said he was going to be lazy? He’s not lazy… he’s a daredevil cat. He thinks that he can sit on the top of doors. So he climbs up everything and then tries to jump on the top of the door. I’ve had to catch him like three times.” He adored the kitten, but the cute thing was definitely giving him gray hairs. 

He leaned in to kiss Alec and just caress his cheek for a moment relishing having him back before pulling away. “No news really. I picked up a double so Kai could be home with Justin. Pup is due any day now.” He moved over to the couch, pulling Alec with him by the hand. “Heard from the boys. They’re settling in okay in Canada. The new pack sounds really good for them and their aunt has the in counseling which is good to hear. Hmm… Oh, and I met this kid.. hell maybe not a kid. But… oh darling you should see him. Scars on his arm, flinches at sudden movements, half starved, living on the street. Anyway, his name is Gilly and I kind of hired him to walk Matty. I don’t think he would accept outright charity and honestly with both of our crazy schedules it’ll be good to have someone who can take him out every day. You okay with that?” 

He realized that he had more news than he thought he did. “Sorry your folks were a nightmare. I think it was brave of you to go back for him. It sounds like I would have liked him too. I’m sorry I never got to meet him.” He squeezed Alec’s hand, knowing this had been so hard for him.

“Henrik is a complete angel. I can’t even believe the things you’re saying about him right now Tristan. He can’t become a lazy fat cat until he’s older so he has to get all of her energy out now while he’s young. You should be nicer to him and not blame him for you getting older.” Alec looked down at the kitten as he started purring. The little guy was truly the cutest thing Alec had ever seen in his life.

Returning the kiss Alec was happy to follow Tristan to the couch. Pushing the other male back before curing up against his side. He had really missed cuddling with Tristan. It had quickly become one of his favorite things to do. “That’s really great. I bet they’re really excited to be parents. I hope you aren’t working too hard though. You look exhausted. I’m so glad to hear that the boys are doing okay. I’m sure the counseling and the new pack will be really good for them.” As he listened to the story about the young male Alec frowned. It sounded like the poor boy had been put through a lot and he couldn’t help but to feel bad for him. “That’s so sad. Poor guy. Of course I don’t mind him walking Matty. You should invite him over for dinner sometime. He sounds like he’s been through a lot. It’s so sad what some people have to go through.”

“It’s fine. I didn’t expect anything else from them. I thought they were going to abduct me and lock me away somewhere but they ended up just glaring at me and going on about how I shouldn’t have left. They’re pretty much the worst. I did get some things from my old room that I’ve been wanting though so I guess that’s a plus too.”

“Any pain any pain anywhere? Yeah…right here. In my ass.” Tucker gave a pointed look at Alec but then went silent, scowling straight ahead at the wall. Things between him and Tristan had been going actually well, it had been nice and fun…and they’d had a moment in the car and it was fucking nice. And now there was this monkey wrench thrown into it. 

“Sorry for your loss…” He managed gruffly, rubbing his arm once the pressure cuff was gone. 

“Look Tucker I can see that you have a problem with me. Honestly I don’t see why you hate me so much but it’s fine. You can dislike me as much as you want to. Your blood pressure is fine. You don’t look like you’re bleeding or anything. So I should probably just go. I can’t really get into this snark fest with you right now.”

He moved to walk out of the door. He couldn’t fight with anyone right now. He was still a bit too emotional from his grandfather dying and the constant fighting he had done with his parents while he was away. He refused to end up crying in front of Tucker again. “Your doctor will be in soon and I hope everything goes well with your appointment.”

Tucker hadn’t wanted to get a check up, but one last screening would clear him and he’d be officially done with all the backrooms and their bullshit. So he would endure one more trip to the doctors, get his lollipop at the end and then maybe see if Tristan knew of anymore good places to eat around town. The man had an endless list of them it seemed sometimes. 

The Beta was lounging on the exam table, half asleep as he waited, though the voice as the other entered the room made his lips twitch downward. “Oh…you aren’t my regular nurse…” He sat up, scowl growing. 

“Nice of you to grace us with your presence again.” 

“Sorry about that. Your regular nurse had to take the day off.” Alec offered him a small smile as he moved to put the cuff around his arm. “Well I had to go out of town for a funeral so.” He trailed off as he started to take Tucker’s blood pressure. He didn’t know why but he felt like maybe he was supposed to give Tucker an explanation for his disappearance. 

He was sure the other male would make some snarky comment about it as was his usual thing to do. He didn’t hold any ill will towards Tucker and would do his best to be friendly with the other male as best as he could. He knew that Tristan liked him and that he valued his friendship so naturally Alec didn’t want any problems with him. 

“Your blood pressure is good. Is there anything going on that your doctor should be made aware of? Feeling any pain anywhere?”

With Alec out of town to go to his grandfather’s funeral and Tucker busy with his new research, Tristan had decide to work double shift. One of his paramedic firefighters’s mate was due any day and Tris was happy to give him the time off to be there. But working that many hours came with a definite downside… he was exhausted. It didn’t help that he missed his boyfriend terribly. Coming back to an empty apartment was wearing on him. It had been his life for so long, but now he hated it. He missed having Alec there. 

What had started as a short visit to attend the funeral of a beloved grandfather quickly turned into a whole week. Tristan was worried about the Omega. Alec didn’t talk about his family much, but what he did know was not good. He wouldn’t admit it to himself, but part of him was worried the family would figure out some way to keep Alec there. 

All of those thoughts were whirring through his brain as he was cleaning the bedroom. Cleaning was his way of burning off nervous energy. Henrik and Matty were just watching him from the bed until the front door opened and they both bolted. There was only one person it could be. He turned to the mirror and realized this was not good. He was wearing his janky old sweats and a Vollmond Fire Department tshirt that had definitly seen better days. He’d woken up after his first night sleeping at home and not bothered to do much of anything. His hair was sticking up every which way and his beard, normally kept short and neat was overgrown and scraggly. He tried to do a bit of damage control, but Alec’s shout interrupted. There was no use. 

“Hey, hey… you you calling old?” He smiled as he came up to Alec and pulled him in close. “Missed you.” 

Alec grinned when he saw Tristan. He had never been so happy to see him before. He noted that the other was a bit scruffy but it was kinda cute on him. Sighing happily he wrapped his arms tightly around his boyfriend. “I was calling you old obviously. Are those grey hairs I see?” He teased with a grin. “I missed you too. So much you have no idea.”

“Tell me everything that I’ve missed. All the latest gossip. Everything new with you. What our pets did. Just everything. I would share news with you but I don’t have any. The funeral was sad. My parents were horrible. My ex was worse. I did inherit a really cool watch and some money from my grandfather though. So I guess that was nice. He would have really liked you you know. He would have been thrilled about us. He didn’t like my parents much either.”

Alec hadn’t meant to stay away for quite so long but his parents had found reason upon reason for him to stay in town. He suspected they had just wanted to keep him there until he somehow magically forgot that he didn’t live there anymore. They had been less than pleased when he told them about dropping out of school to become a nurse again and even more annoyed with him when he told them that he was dating Tristan. They claimed it was simply because he wasn’t an alpha but Alec knew better. They wouldn’t accept anyone except his ex for him. 

He had gone only because his grandfather had been important to him. The man would have been disappointed had Alec stayed away. Tristan was thankfully not available to come with him. He had dodged a bullet with that. If he was lucky his boyfriend would never have to meet anyone from his family. Which suited him perfectly.

Walking up to Tristan’s door he quickly let himself inside and set his suitcase down just inside the doorway. He hadn’t gone home before coming here. There wasn’t a point in going home first anyway. They only ones he wanted to see were right here. Grinning as he saw Matty and Henrik coming to meet him at the door he moved further inside calling out a bit too loudly for Tristan. “Tris! I’m back. Tell me you aren’t asleep yet. If you are then you need to get up old man.”

Alec hadn’t been at the hospital in awhile due to being out of town for his grandfather’s funeral. Which of course he could have lived without given his parents were a nightmare but he had liked the old man so he went and ended up staying for about a week. Far longer than he had wanted but there was nothing to be done about it. As he walked into the patient’s room he looked down at the clipboard he was holding as he spoke. “The doctor will be in momentarily but in the mean time let’s take your blood pressure.”

“What ways are those?” Alec asked grumpily as he rolled his eyes. He was insufferable when sick which he found ironic. Considering he didn’t enjoy when his patients acted that way. He ignored the I love you comment. Instead dragging Henrik up to lay near his face.

“It’s not high enough to drag me to the hospital.” Alec barely managed to get the warning out before some soup was poured into his mouth. He thought it tasted good and would have enjoyed it had he not been sick. “You aren’t going to try to force me to go are you?”

Tristan put the soup bowl down and leaned in to kiss Alec, just a sweet slow kiss, but with the promise when he felt better. “Pretty sure nurses and doctors don’t give out kisses.” He kissed him again and then sat up patting Henrik as he went. 

He breathed in deeply. “I’m not going to promise that I won’t take you if this gets worse. Sorry, but I just won’t, but for now I’m pretty sure the nurse and the paramedic can handle this.” He knew that Alec didn’t want to go to the hospital, but he would rather his boyfriend was angry with him than risk his life. “I think this is probably just the flu so we’ll just keep you feed and hydrated until the worst is over.

“Oh. You mean all those times I gave them out I really didn’t have to?” He asked teasingly with a little smirk. Of course he hadn’t kissed anyone but he hoped his humor showed just how over he was about the kiss between Tristan and Tucker.

“If you take me to the hospital I will just randomly throw things like pillows at you for weeks.” It wasn’t an empty threat but he would only throw things that wouldnt actually hurt his boyfriend. “I want cuddles. Carry me to bed. The couch is too small.” He demanded giving Tristan his most pathetic pout.

Alec sighed nodding grudgingly at what Tristan said. He hated being babied but he really loved it too so he felt conflicted on top of being sick. Which only served to annoy him more. “It wasn’t a big deal so I didn’t think you would want to be bothered. You could have been doing something important and besides I’m a nurse so I should be able to take care of myself. I am happy that you want to know when I’m sick though.”

“Well no but if you are sick I do not promise to kiss you. I am terrified of germs. They are horrible nasty things. No! I do not like getting my temperature taken. That is horrible Tristan. I thought you loved me.” He accused with a pout as he squirmed around in the blankets. As Tristan left him to find the dumb thermometer, the only reason he had one was because Tristan put it there, he continued to sulk. Matty went following Tristan like he normally did but Henrik just laid on Alec’s stomach. Obviously annoyed that he had been disturbed at all when Tristan came home. 

When he came back with the soup and thermometer Alec almost didn’t let him take his temp but he was pretty sure that Tristan wouldn’t give him any soup if he didn’t. Sighing he opened his mouth so Tristan could take his temperature but he glared at him the entire time.

“I love be bothered…” He tilted Alec’s chin up. “by you.” And it was true he would go through anything for Alec. A little bit of bothering was easy. “I know you can take care of your health. You’re a good nurse. But I can take care of you in ways that no nurse or doctor or anything can.” 

He laughed out loud, but just kissed him again before going on his search. “I love you more than anything Darlin’.” He shouted from the other end of the apartment. 

Alec’s glare was not the deterant the Omega might have thought it was. “You’re cute.” Tristan said as he finally pulled the thermometer free. “Hmmm… 101.5. That’s pretty high Darlin’.” He scooped up some soup and offered it to him. “Have some off this.” He reached up with his free hand to stroke through his hair.

“I’ve covered for enough people, taken enough overtime, and generally worked my butt off so leaving early when my boyfriend is sick is ok… okay?” He cupped Alec’s cheek. “Call me if anything like this happens while I’m on shift. The worst thing that happens is I can’t come home, but at least I’ll know what’s up.” 

Tristan’s brow raised sceptically. “You think I’m just going to leave you here like this and go home? No way.” He proceeded to tuck Alec in with the blankets after fluffing the pillows and settling his boyfriend down in them. “I’m going to go work on that soup and find a thermometer.” He kissed Alec’s forehead and then his lips, as if to prove that he didn’t care one bit about his germs. Settling a hand on the other’s chest he felt for any possible rattling or maybe rales that might signal pneumonia. Feeling assured for the moment he got up and went first to the kitchen to set some chicken broth to heat on the stove and then to search the bathroom for a thermometer. 

It was no more than fifteen minutes before he returned with both soup and the thermometer as well as Matty who was trailing behind him the whole time. “Okay, let’s take your temperature and then you can have some soup. Don’t want you to get dehydrated.”

Coming off a 48 hour shift, Tristan was looking forward to getting home, kissing his boyfriend, convincing said boyfriend to make him food, walking the dog, andd then cuddling with the dog, the kitten, and the boyfriend. All in that order thank you very much.

The hoarse, raspy voice that greeted him when he opened Alec’s front door nixed all that immediately. He’d have been bummed, if worry hadn’t won out first. “Hey… hey..” He dropped his gear and went to the sofa not even worrying about the mountain of tissues. He took up Alec’s wrist gently in his hand and took his pulse while using the other hand to swipe sweaty bangs from his forehead. “You’re pretty sick, huh? Why didn’t you call me?” He quickly assessed his boyfriends color and breathing sounds and for the moment was assured that this was simply a cold, but that only kicked the worry down a notch or two.

Alec flinched a bit at how cold Tristan’s hands were. He hated being sick it didn’t matter what kind of sick it was. He couldn’t stand it and it turned him into a very whiny person. It wasn’t like he could really help himself though. He really just wanted Tristan to baby him a bit and he was pretty sure that he would. 

“Yes. I have a cold. It’s the worst. I didn’t call because I didn’t want you to over worry and then try to get off of shift early.” Pouting he moved a bit closer so he could press his face against Tristan’s shoulder. “I feel really gross.” Everything he said sounded really whiny and pathetic but he didn’t care. When he was sick he didn’t want to do anything except lie around and eat soup. Henrik who had been laying on his stomach most of the day picked that moment to move from his stomach to right up near his face. The kitten had no personal space boundaries. Pouting a bit more he set the kitten on Tristan’s shoulder so it wouldn’t be so close to him. “Tristan you should probably go to your place so you don’t end up with a cold too but I would prefer you to baby me and make me soup.”

Alec was sprawled out on the couch with at least a million tissues scattered around him on the coffee table and floor. At least he would have sworn there were a million of them. He was lucky that he had the next couple of days off of work but he still hated being sick. For being a nurse he acted pretty pathetic when it came to any kind of sickness. Colds were the worst in his mind. He hated the constant yucky feeling of them and he could never sleep right. 

When he heard the door to the apartment open he knew that it had to be Tristan. Tugging the blanket that had been laying over his head down he called out towards the general direction of the door. “Tristan!” He sounded pretty raspy and he coughed a few times from trying to yell. “I’m sick.” He whined in his most pathetic voice as his boyfriend came into view.

A New World - Open

The young man smiled and didn’t seem bothered by the collision, so Atticus offered up a smile of his own, though instinct had him keeping a hand over his more then ever vulnerable midsection covered. “No, I’m certain it was entirely me. You see I’m new and town and a bit overwhelmed. There’s more on this one street than the whole of downtown back home.” He bit his lip and looked down, aware that he was probably talking a bit too much. Not everyone appreciated a stranger blabbing away at them. “I’m quite alright of course. None the worse for wear. Honestly, I’m convince that if that bumpy bus ride didn’t do me in, not much will.” He looked back up at the other man as a frown marred his features. “Are you alright?” 

“Are you? You wouldn’t happen to be part of the Regenbogen pack would you?I only ask because I heard we were getting a new packmate. Honestly I know this town can seem a bit big at first but you’ll soon get to know everyone around or at least recognize who they are. New people are spotted pretty quickly around here because of it.” Alec opened his mouth to continue his rambling when he stopped abruptly and blushed a bit. “Sorry I have a bad habit of rambling. I certainly don’t want to keep you if you were off somewhere important. If you weren’t though maybe you would like some company? We could take a tour of the town if you like. I was just going to the store but other than that I don’t really have anything important going on.” He hoped that the male didn’t think he was trying to take him off somewhere and kill him or anything. He was just trying to be friendly but it was a new thing for him so he didn’t know for sure how he was coming off to people. “Oh. I’m Alec by the way. It’s nice to meet you and yeah I’m alright. Honestly I consider anytime that I keep on my feet to be a success.”

Adoption Day ~ Alec & Tristan

It made Tristan feel sad that it was so hard for Alec to receive the simple compliments. Or perhaps more specifically, it was so hard for him to believe them. It also made him feel determined to keep giving them and someday convince Alec that they were true. 

“No he really doesn’t.” He whistled for the puppy who came back over, tongue lolling and looking for playtime. Instead Tris had him sit and after praising him for obeying, spoke seriously to the puppy. “Matty, you need to teach Henrik a little discipline alright? Now go watch over him to keep him destroying more of Alec’s apartment.” He gave the kitten the stinkeye even as he was sitting. The little furball was adorable and he was pretty sure was going to have him wrapped arouond his little paw in no time. He had to make the best of it while he could. He turned to face Alec. “He’s already got you doesn’t he?” 

Alec rolled his eyes as Tristan told Matty to watch Henrik and to teach him some discipline. It was pretty funny to think about and Alec didn’t think that the puppy had much of a chance of accomplishing his task. As Tristan sat down Alec moved to curl up against his side. Resting his head on his shoulder. “I think it will be the exact opposite of what you want. Henrik will end up leading Matty into all kinds of trouble. He won’t be tamed the little rascal. Henrik pretty much had me since I laid eyes on him. To be fair it’s not all that hard to win me over. I’m a pretty easy person. Who could resist Henrik though? He’s really cute and has amazing eyes. Matty is adorable too. I love how big his paws are compared to the rest of him. I plan to spoil both of them horribly when you’re away at work.”

Atti had to leave the hotel room and get some fresh air. His eyes still felt itchy and raw from crying, but a quick look in the mirror didn’t seem to betray his breakdown other than maybe a little red to his cheeks. That could be explained away by the brisk Oregon air. He didn’t want to go far from the hotel fearful that he’d get lost so he walked slowly down the main street looking at everything and feeling overwhelmed. He didn’t even see the person until he was colliding with them, hand covering his stomach protectively as the other reached to steady himself. “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going.” 

Alec was going over in his mind what he needed from the store as he walked a bit faster than normal down the street. It was chilly and Alec had never been a fan of the store. Tristan was working that day or they would have taken his truck to the store. He really should have gone yesterday but he had told Tristan that he just wanted them to stay in since they both had the day off. A rare occurrence since he started working at the hospital but it was worth it. He loved his new job and he was happier than ever. When he walked into someone he hadn’t even noticed that they were there until he was trying to catch his balance. The other apologized but it honestly could have been his fault. He wasn’t known for paying attention. Smiling a bit awkwardly he offered his own quick apology as he looked the other male over to make sure that he was okay. “Honestly it was probably my fault. I wasn’t watching where I was going either. Are you okay?”
