Video projection onto the Denver Clock Tower 2021
The People's Projector (The Denver Theatre District with Night Lights Denver) invited me to display “Flags of Hope - Banderas de Esperanza” for the entire month of February. This was one of the virtual components of an open, collaborative project with the public about imagined futures; the community offered their wishes and hopes in various languages that were then featured on flags (both physical & virtual). These flags were displayed in outdoor installations throughout Boulder and Denver, and will be archived in a virtual world called “Our Utopia / Nuestra Utopia” unidos.club
No Me lo Mate No, Señor Cazador from alejandra abad on Vimeo.
This stop-motion animation features lithographs and original music, and is inspired by the dance and theatrical story of “El Pajaró Guarandol.” This story is about a bird who gets shot by a French hunter for picking at a flower that belongs to him, and how the curandero (healer) pleads for mercy and brings the bird back to life using a seed necklace and a healing potion. The lithograph represents the healer, the potion, and necklaces wrapped over the flower called la rosa de montaña. This story and its performance have several connections to me and my family; the rosa de montaña is a staple of the Venezuelan state of Yaracuy, where my grandfather was born; I acted in the role of el curandero in a play as a child; I also used the cuatro that belonged to my grandfather to play my version of this song in the animation. It is currently part of a group show called Object Empathy at Union Hall, Denver.

Guri from alejandra abad on Vimeo.
Guri by Alejandra Abad
The Guri is a water dam that provides energy to Venezuela. It is now in crisis because of poor management, political turmoil, and corruption. This hydroelectric power plant is located 100km upstream of the Caroni River in Necuima Canyon in Orinoco, Venezuela. As of today, this wealthy area has attracted other countries to extract and take our minerals and goods. The current state of affairs in Venezuela is critical, as many are left without power to use. The mining process of extraction has been very violent. The president is selling our country. This level of corruption should be a cautionary tale for the current U.S. administration.

Poli Mito from alejandra abad on Vimeo.
Partially based on a Venezuelan folk tale, Poli Mito (Poly Myth) is an animated tale about disobedience and independence. In the original tale, a father from the indigenous Warao tribe orders his daughters to bring light from el dueño de la luz (the keeper of the light). The name “Poli Mito'' is a response to the idea of the monomythic hero; while there can be similarities in heroic tales, this tale celebrates diversity and divergence from the status quo. This animation was screened in Miami at the Borscht Film Festival in 2019. It was commissioned by Borscht Corp, supported by NoBroZone, a Knight Foundation grant challenge and First Generation Stories, through OneFifty, in partnership with Time-Warner.
