First off, the reason I make this post is a dm from @little-noko about Paper Crane. Originally in my art post (which the sketch is more likeable?), I wrote that Paper Crane is a “Sans” which is false of course. I’m kinda surprised since I found Paper Crane from searching on Google, in which I searched “Paper Crane Sans”. That of….is possible one of the factor that led to misunderstood / misinformation.
Before we dive in, I just want to put a disclaimer. For safety reason.
This isn’t supposed to restrict give opinions or “freedom speak”. But for understanding the creator’s of that character.
I do not tell you how to act or speak but rather to cleared up some misinformation/misunderstanding.
I’m going to cover this as objective as possible. I wanted to do this cause I felt the same as an Undertale AU creator too and wanted to help as I can ^^. Now with that out of the way, let’s dive in!

That’s pretty straight forward right? So, he’s using the what it seemed a “code” that made him look like a Sans! (Correct me if I’m wrong little-noko).

As you can see above, there are 2 skeletons. One is a Sans and one is not. I’m using Paper Crane and my Sans for example. They’re pretty much looks a like right? BUT, not all skeleton that looks like a Sans is 100% Sans. In my opinion, it’s just a stylistic choice. Well, Sans-head style is one of the easiest way to draw skeleton. So I understand the choice.
BUT, I do understand the misunderstood one too. Since that style for a beginner that’s new in the Undertale AU Fandom is mostly for a Sans. Though, that misunderstood could led to problem to the creator’s character in which they won’t be happy.
How Should I Know That It’s Not A Sans?
There are some ways or advice to identify it in which,
Simple, just ask the one who created the character! They would lovely answer your questions to avoid misinformation. Though, some creators are very busy and can’t exactly answer all of the questions or even the same one over and over! It’s….to be honest, a waste of time if the question is the same. Don’t worry though, there’s another way!
Do some research / Read FAQ
We have the internet! We can basically reach anything with it! Creators usually have a FAQ about their characters. Search it! Though, sometimes the creators stated somewhere in their post, that this character is not a sans. Which sometimes sadly don’t get spread to dispel the misinformation.
Do an analysis on the character (NOT recommended!)
You can do an analysis on how the character has a similar or the same power as Sans. Mostly the Undertale AU Sanses has the same ability as the original one. Though this is not recommended since it’s just “your” assumption or analysis. It’s best to follow the first to advice.
Though, it’s my analysis. I tried to do objective as possible. If you have a different analysis on how to handle this than that’s okay. If you have a skeleton OC that looks like a Sans, you can reblog this and add your OC and tell why it’s different from a “Sans”.
Help this misinformation by spreading it! A simple like can’t make a change but a reblog do.
