So We know that a lot of things are going to be properly addressed eventually, but something that bugs me is the fact that while people are more than willing to make Lucy answer for being pushy on Paulo, his EXTENSIVE history of sexual harrassment of HER seems to often be overlooked since he doesn't really act like that anymore. Other than Jordan disliking him it sort of seems like him constantly groping her even as recently as her homecoming to Roseville has sort of just been lumped into the 'Paulo being Paulo' thing by the other characters. Like, even Abbey during his Primo 'fuck this somali' era only ever lumps his 'full-in-public grabbing Lucy's boobs' type behavior with just 'hes a womanizer'

Thats a fun sort of commentary on perspective of men vs women being victims of sexual harrassment. And that people REALLY seem to overlook what Lucy's endured which is a common theme.

Veronica: I do wonder if me editing Paulo’s touching in the omnibus has contributed to that, like he did some serious NASTY touching in the original version. But he still.. touches Lucy a lot! Just because he caresses her face more often than her chest now doesn’t mean that’s suddenly nothing..

Thinking back to Inuyasha it really is.. jawdropping how far Miroku goes my goodness lol. I was like “oh that’s why I used to write like that” and now when I see the show I’m like.. horrified by Miroku. I don’t want people to be completely horrified by Paulo.. you’re certainly meant to have negative feelings about him when he messes with Lucy’s boundaries and says nasty things, but I rather it be.. hormonal teenage sins than predator-core shit. That’s why I toned it down in the omnibus. But I guess now people think Lucy hasn’t gone through enough to justify her behaviour retrospectively?

Anyway I know there’s that continual tone-question with the comic that asks “what’s a joke and what isn’t”, but I feel like it’s pretty standard kid behaviour in a lot of ways to feel like a lot of things are okay until they aren’t. Or until you look at it retrospectively. I’ve always wanted to write it like that. A lot of these kids don’t realise how grave things can actually be.

Иногда даже жалко, что многие прикосновения стали куда мягче. К примеру Дэвид тоже трогал Люси за грудь в Акапулько. Типа.. в этой же главе Майк имел шансы умереть, Люси почти Роскомнадзорнулась, и целая куча тяжелых и острых тем понималась в Кактусе! Неужели нужно их сглаживать только потому, чтобы персонажи не выглядели плохими? Так они совершали плохие дела, но они стали лучше. (ну, кроме Дэвида. Он и так попадет в Рай) Разве не в этом смысл?

Доброе утро! Спасибо за реблог, было неожиданно и мило) Вы рассказывали, что однажды изменили сюжет, потому что персонаж, вроде Майк в Вечном пламени, так бы не поступил. А были ли ещё случаи, когда персонажи не соглашались с вами и приходилось менять планы? Ещё случаи когда читатели раскрывали ваши планы раньше времени и вы такая - "Блин, придется менять!" или что-то подобное?)

Good morning! Thanks for the reblog, it was unexpected and sweet. You mentioned changing the plot once because a character, like Mike in Eternal Flame, wouldn't have done it that way. Were there other times when characters disagreed with you and you had to change your plans? Or when readers revealed your plans ahead of time and you were like, "Damn, I'll have to change that!" or something like that?

Veronica: Some changes I can think of are Paulo and Daisy getting together much earlier and Abbey/Daisy breaking up twice. Abbey and Daisy were supposed to break up only once and wayyyyyy later in the comic, but while I was writing Happy Hour I was like.. Abbey has too much self-respect (and rage) for this.

But I needed Abbey and Daisy to stay together! So I made them get together again under strenuous circumstances.

I also didn’t plan for Lucy to confess her feelings for Mike so early in the comic. She was supposed to confess her feelings more around the end of the comic, isn’t that crazy? How the hell did I think to pull THAT off?

I don’t let reader prediction affect my storytelling. If they predict events happening, then good! It means I’m doing a good job with my writing! It means they’re picking up what I’m putting down!

I really enjoy the interpersonal interactions and relatio ships in your work. I think it's brilliantly done and extremely thoughtful. But I really struggle with the way the fandom interprets these interactions? Theres so much misogyny in what the comments consider to be evil behavior, what they consider acceptable, what gets to be something that you can grow from and what permanently labels you as toxic at the ripe old age of like, 13. Like Lucy having sex with Paulo to tide him over. We don't explicitly see what she said besides inviting him to make out, what promises were made, if any, or whay Paulo experienced. Because of that, I think its best to just say they had sex and nothing else, but so many commenters act like Lucy did something heinous, like she personally ripped Paulo's heart out. Why does he have no agency in seeing how obviously unwell she had been for weeks at that point? Why does no one acknowledge that he should have seen how hollow and empty she was? With Mike, the same commenters get up in arms about his friends not doing anything about seeing his mental health deteriorating. Why are they supposed to be vigilante for him, but not for Lucy?

And in relation to the recent events of the comic, with her going to Mike for comfort, Lucy is experiencing mental anguish at least equal to what Mike is going through and extremely good reasons to not be able to reach out to her friends for help, but there's absolutely no patience or understanding afforded to her. They scold her like she's doing something bad, when she is suffering from what looks like a pretty extreme episode. They roll their eyes at her pain and lament how it negatively affects Mike, who is by all means living in a hell of his own creation.

How do you handle the constant villanization of your female characters, or, if not that extreme, the general lack of empathy for these girls? I love your characters, and I adore their faults and their growth, but I think I lose my mind a little more every time I see someone treat Lucy (or Sandy even!!) like she is the most evil character ever.

Veronica: I pretty much just find myself laughing over some takes and comments and being like “misogyny is one hell of a drug” because what else can you do when you’re just seeing the result of what society pushes towards you from a young age!

Like it’s hard to feel like I’m doing something wrong! The point of this arc is literally to challenge people’s empathy, and yeah that means people are inevitably going to fail the challenge. That’s part of it being a challenge! That’s why I can’t really do anything else but laugh, haha.

But yeah it’s been crazy to see the change in real-time from “Mike is self-inflicting his current nightmare” to “Lucy single-handedly maneuvered Like in the Sand and is the entire reason Mike is alone now”

Like Mike!!! Can talk!! To Felix!!!!!!!!! Paulo sought Mike to help him and Mike redirected him!! To!! Lucy!! What would have happened if Mike didn’t do that! That’s the real answer people don’t seem to come to because they’re too busy calling Lucy a bitch and an evil mastermind who ruined poor innocent Mike’s life.

You’re meant to feel bad for both of them! Both of them are meant to be frustrating! But also.. there’s a lot of hurt they’re actually doing to themselves. Both Mike and Lucy.

At the end of the day, when you get down to it, Mike has an attentive girlfriend who loves him trying to make amends for her past behaviour he doesn’t talk to, friends who love him he doesn’t talk to, family who love him he doesn’t talk to, and Lucy is doing the same (minus the uhh partner lol)

Like do people really think if Mike walked over to Paulo right now like “I’m thinking of killing myself” that Paulo would let that happen? Be for realllll guys! It’s not that easy to blame Lucy for everything!

Давайте представим какой может быть конец у этой колючей истории. Пфф) Да ладно? Чего тут можно представлять, если ответ есть в названии! Но если более конкретно, то давайте будем честными - уже не важно с кем будет Майк в конце. Главное - в каком психическом и душевном состоянии будут персонажи в конце. И это легко доказать! Вот прямо щас кажется (или нет), что Люси поцелует Майка (уже третий раз она инициирует это? Хоть когда-то это закончилось хорошо?.. ) и вроде как.. это должно возродить МайкXЛюси, но как бы не. Всех больше волнует их состояние. Скажи фанатам этого корабля сейчас, что МайкXЛюси - это каноничная финальная пара, то они первым делом не обрадуются, а спросят в каком они состоянии! Я даже могу сказать еретическую мысль, что фанаты МайкXЛюси согласились бы на МайкXСинди, если бы Майк и Люси и даже Синди решили бы свои проблемы и могли бы спокойно жить дальше)

Let's imagine what the ending of this prickly story could be. Pfft. Really? What's there to imagine when the answer is in the title! But more specifically, let's be honest - it doesn't matter who Mike ends up with in the end. The main thing is the characters' mental and emotional state at the end. And that's easy to prove! Right now, it seems (or doesn't) that Lucy will kiss Mike (is this the third time she's initiated this? Has that ever ended well?) and it seems like… this should revive MikeXLucy, but it seems unlikely. Everyone is more concerned about their state of mind. If you tell fans of this ship now that MikeXLucy is the canonical final couple, the first thing they won't be happy about is asking what state they're in! I can even offer the heretical thought that MikeXLucy fans would agree to MikeXCindy if Mike and Lucy, and even Cindy, resolved their issues and could move on peacefully.

Хех, а я был прав изначально. Думал, что Люси не могла просто так вернуться. Что что-то точно было. Что-то ещё.. Но потом сбился с пути.. как хорошо, что автор Кактуса вернул меня на светло-кислый путь!

Новая страница напоминает о много чём, но в первую очередь вспомнился момент, когда в 91 главе Майк вспомнил как завалился ночью, после того как не смог впервые за годы встретиться с Синди и получил бонсай, за утешением.

И он его получил. Так что скорее всего и Люси получит свое утешение. Несмотря на то, что в обоих ситуациях любой сторонний наблюдатель сказал бы что это плохая идея. И это действительно плохая идея) Зато сколько колючек Драмы!

Люси может сейчас даже рассказать Майку почему она вернулась, настолько все плохо с её состоянием. Серьезно, сон - это важно!

Ладно, как пояснили другие, она не может вот сию секунду прыгнуть на Августа за утешением, но похоже она и брату не доверяет, даже не смотря на недавнюю милую сцену, где её припёрли к шкафчикам и заставили принять его доверие.

Итак.. что сделает Майк? Будет забавно, если в него таки вбили правило - не говори с Люси и он просто будет молча выслушивать её. Но даже если нет, то он разумеется утешит Люси. Даже если внезапно появиться черепаха и он на неё упадет.

Ну и разумеется, глава не просто так называется. В прошлой главе он "счастливо" засыпал на парте думая, что все пришло в норму без него и Люси более чем в хорошем состоянии. И тут ему свалиться откровение, что не-nain-no, у неё все плохо и кто в этом виноват? Майк знает ответ) Так что давай, ещё 1000 кругов пока к финишу не придет скелет! А Люси хоть и получит утешение, но оно будет временное. Потому что она более чем наглядно увидит насколько Майку плохо.

К тому же Синди наверняка позвонит! Не может быть такого, чтобы она не позвонила при Люси и не сказала бы что либо сейчас либо завтра приезжает.

Я бы сказал, что для полного и белого на огонёк должен был заявиться Алехандро.. но скорее всего он вообще не появиться. И пошлёт единственную оставшуюся у него шестёрку... которая знает про секрет Августа!

Heh, and I was right from the start. Reckoned Lucy couldn't have just come back for no reason. That there was definitely something. Something else.. But then I lost my way.. how good is it that the author of Cactus brought me back to the light-sour path!

The new page reminds me of a lot of things, but first and foremost I remembered the moment when in chapter 91 Mike remembered how he rocked up at night for comfort, after failing to meet Sandy for the first time in years and getting a bonsai.

And he got it. So most likely Lucy will get her comfort too. Even though in both situations any outside observer would say it's a bad idea. (And it really is a bad idea) But look at all the prickles of Drama!

Lucy might even tell Mike right now why she came back, her condition is just that bad. Seriously, sleep is important!

Alright, as others explained, she can't just jump on August for comfort this very second, but it looks like she doesn't trust her brother either, even despite the recent cute scene where she was pinned to the lockers and forced to accept his trust.

So.. what will Mike do? It'll be funny if the rule "don't talk to Lucy" was actually drilled into him and he'll just listen to her in silence.

But even if not, he'll obviously comfort Lucy. Even if a turtle suddenly appears and he falls on it.

And of course, the chapter isn't named that for nothing. In the last chapter he was "happily" falling asleep on his desk thinking that everything went back to normal without him and Lucy is in more than good shape. And then the revelation drops on him that no-nein-no, she's doing terribly and who's to blame for that? (Mike knows the answer) So come on, another 1000 laps until a skeleton reaches the finish line! And even though Lucy will get her comfort, it'll be temporary. Because she'll see more than clearly just how rough Mike is doing.

Besides, Sandy will definitely ring! There's no way she wouldn't call while Lucy is there and say that she's coming over either now or tomorrow.

I'd say that to top it all off Alejandro should have rocked up.. but most likely he won't show up at all. And he'll send his only remaining lackey... who knows about August's secret!

Interesting that Sandy doesn't plan to go to college. I could totally see her going specifically for a fashion design degree or maybe theater if she wanted to try to break into acting. Not immediately, maybe, but with perspective and time, like she'd go back to school in her thirties for the experience and for her career, especially since a modeling career doesn't always last super far past that age. Does she have any long-term plans? It seems like the sort of thing she would think about from what we've seen of her recent focus on being an adult.

Veronica: Sandy would not be thinking about this sorta thing at all! She’s basically mostly fine being told what to do by her mother. Despite finding the lack of independence frustrating, Sandy trusts her mother, and figures the mother will always look out for her. So whatever career options the mother asks for Sandy will do!

They are butting heads since the mother does want Sandy to go to school.. and Sandy likes modeling too much.. so the mother will inevitably have to work around that.

Sandy will get taken care of regardless so she doesn’t have to think about her future much lol

i recently did my monthly rewatch of killer tune and then looked at the current page and i suddenly feel an inexplicable sense of dread and also elation. i love this comic :,)

There’s so many AMVs I’ve created in my head over the years and Killer Tune is the first I’ve decided to make into a reality.. which still embarrasses me a little because of its cringe sincerity, but I kinda love that now whenever certain moments are happening in the comic people are like “killer tune killer tune killer tune” lmfao aaaaaaaa

"Не рассказывай, а показывай!" Когда продукт творчества можно по разному толковать, то именно тогда он становиться творчеством. Даже шутка, что в музее табличка "туалет закрыт" уже арт-объект, лишь частично шутка.

Итак.. что мы видим на картинке?) Майк! Ты ЖИВ! Какое Щастье) Устал, бежит бегмя, дышит носом, молодец! И тут... Внезапная Люси Внезапна) На месте Майка я бы подумал что меня щас будут бить.. возможно даже ногами! Вон, руки у Люси уже собраны в кулаки! Конечно, пальцы Люси сейчас, как уже было много раз показано, впиваются в ладони, но мы этого уже не видим. И Майк берет награду "Невнимательность 20 уровня", раз не заметил Люси, пока она не оказалась в трех метрах. Забавно, но на среднем фрейме у Майка как будто есть грудь. Надеюсь, что он не принимает тайно "такие" таблетки...

Майк переходит из состояния - "о, Люси" в состояние - "О нет, Люси..." И сразу стало темнеть. И мне кажется, пока что только кажется, что это новый способ показать травму Майка. Ну, знаете, когда "потемнело в глазах"? Думаю, ему подходит. Никаких звезд или наползающей тьмы. Просто весь мир стал темнее... А Люси? Ты ещё здесь?) Сжалась и сдвинула голову набок. Тени на теле максимальны. (Забавно, что внезапно грудь получает свою тень. Я конечно знал, что подростки быстро растут, но чтоб настолько)) ) Она ждет решения. И Майк продолжает бежать. Уменьшаются и пропадают кружочки вроде как показывающие усталость. (Правка! Возможно это не кружочки, а пузырьки. Killer Tune напомнило о них

Если это так, то если Люси видит редкие иллюзии и иногда на фоне идет небо со звездами, то Майк уже тонет в них! Это было бы прекрасной отсылкой на то, что как бы он чуть не умер в воде. ДВАЖДЫ! И это многое меняет. Если мы переживали за Люси которая дошла до того, что уже почти не скрывается за маской перед теми, кто приходит к ней во снах и от небольшого толчка по разуму уже видит иллюзии, то КАК нам стоит переживать за Майка, если он НЕ видит иллюзии того, что он тонет, только в редкие моменты? Правка окончена.) У него открывается второе дыхание.. и сразу закрывается, когда он пробегает мимо и кружочки возвращаются. Максимальная тень. Максимальная вина. Есть только Он и Она. Люси освещает, все же это не её вина зачернила картинку. Она хочет света. Сейчас. Она пытается позвать Его. Сразу по полному имени, но голос подводит.

Впрочем, с этим она справляется и кричит. Майк не может не откликнуться. Но вот только лица у него нет. Полагаю хорошей концовкой для них будет установка границ и расставание, в котором они смогут пойти каждый своим путем. Пути могут быть близкие, даже семейные, но полностью свои. И это решит их конфликты, где не надо будет прыгать на других или стелиться перед ними. Не на или под, а рядом. Хех, а пока Люси упрямиться. Серьезно) Ты пришла ради помощи и боишься показать, что она тебе нужна? Как недавно верно сказал автор Кактуса - "Люси такая дура") И Майк увидевший это опять затемняет мир и предлагает Люси уйти, тем самым уже трогая её травму, что видно по тому как вместо просто потемнения тьма начинает клубиться вокруг Люси.

Уши Майка выдают большое желание быть где-то ещё. Не понимаю, уши, хвосты, когти и вздыбившаяся шерсть отлично дополняют выражение эмоций. Вон, совсем недавно при разборе отношений Сью и Пауло, Сью только по одной шерсти поняла что Пауло в ярости и не захотела его трогать. Опять же Пауло отлично мурчал, лежа на коленках. Зачем это желать убрать.. В общем, морда Майка говорит, что он ждёт. Ждёт чего-то плохого. И я с ним полностью согласен. С ним даже зрители почти поголовно согласны. Может даже без почти. Если Линия на песке была его окончательным Декабрем.. (Кто считал, сколько Декабрей у него уже было?) То щас почти уверен будет повтор "по просьбам трудящихся" Вечного пламени. На бис, Маэстро! А Люси полностью расклеиваться. Если раньше тело само захотело двинуться и остановить Майка (кстати, если бы Она схватила Его, то были бы крики как в Вечном пламени когда Майк остановил Люси схватив её рукой.. тут она тоже остановила, без рук, но не менее эффективно), то сейчас непослушное тело не может остановить слез. Потому что перед Ним - Можно! Интересно наблюдать как тьма наполняет фон, делает темнее, причем только фон Люси, которую загнали в узкие окошки.. правда один взгляд на Майка и тьма отступает.. а потом течёт как тушь на глазах. И Люси вырывается из них, прорывая их грудью.. которая опять же внезапно выросла. Мне одному кажется, что грудь Люси тайно ходит в качалку и имеет свой лор?)) Ну типа.. не каждая грудь может порвать границы фреймов и позволить выйти за границы страницы!

Люси бежит, хватается за Майка и плачет. Теневая Люси бежит, светлеет хватаясь за Майка, который видно получил тень Люси и сам потемнел. А ещё получил голову как у игрушки ЛЕГО. Обесчеловечился? ОбезКОТился? В принципе, так и работает утешение? Ты вываливаешь свои проблемы на другого, другой темнеет, но зато тебе стало легче?

Нам осталось 8 страниц до конца главы, но мне кажется следующая про то как они просто стоят, так что 7. Совсем скоро должен произойти Неожиданный Поворот)

Хех, это может ничего не значить, все же это просто моя трактовка, но моменты когда Майк пробежал мимо и когда Люси бросились на Майка, были заполнены именно тьмой-травмой-виной Майка. И я не удивлюсь, если она ещё вырастет. Закроет собой не только мир, но и Люси.

Почему-то мне кажется, что хвост Майка стал более пушистым? Это типа зимняя шкура? Или у хвоста Майка тоже есть скрытый лор?))

Говорю сразу, я так и не понял как работают тут красные чёрточки на мордахах)

Давайте просто представим САМОЕ ХУДШЕЕ, что может случиться и это Майк стоящий истуканом, постепенно успокаивающаяся Люси и тихая фраза "Синди завтра/сегодня приедет".. после чего Люси просто падает, а Майк продолжает бежать.

While most fans are talking about the last panel on page 14 of Victim Complex, I also wanted to draw some attention to the rest of the page. So I must say, there's something very sad about Mike running track on his lonesome side. However, more than just a feeling of melancholy, it also sparked a certain interest in me. When you consider that Mike is skipping actual track team meetings, why does he continue to run during breaks it seems like Mike is punishing himself/self-harming because of guilt

Veronica: I don’t drink tea so I can’t really answer this! Tea is too bitter, coffee is too bitter, I avoid all of it! Nasty stuff!

Souppy made the observation that I seem to avoid hot drinks and he’s right, honestly.. what’s the point of drinking a hot drink. Maybe a hot chocolate if it’s really cold, but why not have soup instead lol

Не могли ли бы почитать комментарии под русским переводом и сказать пару слов? Или не пару... У вас такой прекрасный комикс, но из-за языкового и других барьеров мы так мало общаемся. Кажется, прочитав все что было в tumblr, я насчитал меньше дюжины русских вопросов. Ну, кроме того момента, когда вы возмутились комментами про фигуру Дейзи, когда вы сами проявили инициативу... Could you please read the comments under the Russian translation and say a few words? Or maybe not... You have such a wonderful comic, but because of language and other barriers, we communicate so little. I think, after reading everything on Tumblr, I counted less than a dozen Russian questions. Well, except for the moment when you were outraged by the comments about Daisy's figure, when you yourself took the initiative... I'd especially like to commend the translator! Without him, our group would have disappeared! I'm glad that despite everything, we're still creating!

Veronica: Aww, I’m sorry!! 😭😭😭 I should try to read Russian comments yes, though the frank answer is that I try to avoid looking up what people think! I think the only exposure I give myself these days is patreon comments, Bluesky, and here. So I guess if people want their opinions to be read, they should be commenting on those places.

I do agree the language barrier is sad. I’m really grateful to the Russian translators! It’s so awesome you guys have stuck around with the comic for so many years!!! Was I really outraged about the Daisy comments? I remember poking fun at it, and maybe getting frustrated with the nastier people, but I remember the nastier people wrote in English lol

Omg that old post is so funny to see! It looks as if I was angry but I’m like 99.9% sure that was meant to be a joke!

It honestly looks like something Souppy woulda written in jest rather than me. Like exaggerated mock-outrage over comments that sounded really absurd and very blunt.

I do remember there were people actually like.. genuinely really mean about Daisy, which I didn’t appreciate at all, but “swollen” was something I found hilarious because of how tone-deaf it sounded.

Причем первый русский коммент был оставлен русским переводчиком.. вторым.. который ушёл. И удалил этот комент. Второй коментатор тоже удалил и ушёл.. Не из-за этого конечно) Первый в 20 году, а второй в 25. Просто печально, когда люди уходят и оставляют недогрызенный Кактус!
