It's all about the numbers. Racing costs money. The trick is spending it the right way. Epilogue. Seat time is what everyone wants. Seat time without some coaching and direction just ends up with you learning bad habits that will be really hard to get rid off. Unstructured track time is a massive waste of time, effort and money. Get some time with a coach, and then practice what you're told. You'll get better, faster and enjoy your racing more. Even if you just kart for fun - get a bit of coaching and you'll enjoy it much more... (and you won't end up angering other drivers due to your poor track craft wrecking their sessions!). It's all about the numbers. Part 2 of 2. Racing costs money. The trick is spending it the right way. It's important to listen to advice - but you can have too much. There are many ways to set up a kart and approach racing techniques, and each coach/team/instructor you meet may have great success... BUT their styles and set ups might not work if you listen to a bit of one, and a bit of a different person... and try to mix them up. I would say advice given on the Internet might work for some karts/people, but not for all. I'm not saying some of the advice is wrong - but it might be wrong for you. I read many arguments about do this or do that... and both sides might have great success with what they are saying... but unless you follow one of them completely, and set everything up like they do... then it might be terrible for you. My dad explained: It's a bit like two people telling you the best thing to add to improve a sandwich. One says hot mustard, and one says chocolate spread. Those people (and half the Internet!) will then argue which is best... but if my sandwich has beef in it, then only the mustard is going to work! Find one coach/instructor and stick with them. You can listen to other advice - it might be helpful, and some of it is generic - but your coach is the one you need to follow. He makes the whole sandwich... I use @j_dex of @jackdexracing for coaching. Coaches have different styles, and I like his. The best investment is in coaching. £100 spent on a session with a coach will give you more gains than £100 spent on 'go faster' bits for your kart and engine. Who taught me this... It must surely be my coach because he'd benefit from this advice! Nope. It was my engine builder He'd rather people learnt to race properly, to then get the most out of the engine, than to waste money on an engine that you can't race the best out of. This, and the fact he makes fantastic engines and gives all kinds of great advice, is why I use @wrengines. Engines... Don't ask the Internet how much oil to use, or what make... ask your engine builder. They will have set the engine up to run a specific way. I always follow what @colinwright43 tells me to do with my engine, and it always performs strongly. Why focused race karts handle better than corporate hire karts... FLEX!!! Hire karts like Team Sport have to be tough for the abuse they get from people with limited or no experience, who crash and bump into everything and everyone. Focused race karts don't need to be built like a tank, which allows for them to flex, transfer grip and handle sharper and quicker. It's also why they can crack and bend over time - which is why it's always important to check them regularly. Great day out with dad @lucasblack , and @mr_ed_robinson and his kids. I got the fastest time on one of the sim racer challenge shows, beating all the other racers from the four days the show was on. We waited until the end of the day so the queues had died down, and then I went in and took the record by over half a second. Never used the rig before, but I had 3 laps, so had time to feel it out. One of the spare chassis is for sale. All straight and true. Bought as a spare, but never used. The only action it saw was putting on a jig to check it wasn't bent, and to examine for cracks - and it was found to be perfectly good.
