Quote: “…father’s advanced age, and how wretched my sickness would make Elizabeth, he spared them…concealing the extent of my disorder”(87)
Mini-summary of immediate context: The fact that his father is not able to travel long distances because of his age and unfitness allows Victor to think of how much he loves and respects his father and doesn’t want to worsen his condition. As for Elizabeth he doesn’t want her to stop loving him because he is so ill and also doesn’t want to ruin her innocence by revealing his true condition.
Mini-summary of broader context: Clerval, one of Victor’s best friends from home had just come to the city to study and ran into Victor and see’s that he is horribly sick, that his mental state has brought on a course of bodily decay. Clerval covers up his true state because Victor is violently ill and doesn’t want his family to be conceded to the point that they also become ill .
Focal word/ phase: Concealing
2 Binaries: Life vs. Death, Madness vs. Sanity
2 implications of the quotations: Victor does not want his family to know how bad his condition was which seems like he is trying to be sparing and nice but i think that he just doesn’t want to appear weak and fragile to the people that he has always been the strongest around. He does not want them to figure out his secret about the creature.
Clerval doesn’t want his health to worsen to death around his family because if he died in front of them they would be frantic and he might have to take care of them also. He might not want them around because they would distract from him focusing on getting better because he would act like he is completely fine causing his condition to worsen. But this is all speculation and the readers will never know yet that is the beauty in literature.
Additional reference: “Only a little uneasy that they hear from you seldom”(86). This is written by Elizabeth to Victor showing her concern for him and her love that still remains for him. Which causes more anxiety for Victor knowing that he needs to get better soon before they become overwhelmed with grief.
Analytical paragraph: The main quote that i had mentioned above shows that Victor has not really changed his ways because of the experience with the creature he has not really grown or learned from the major event it seems as though he keeps trying to run form his problems and act as if he ignores them they will go away. This is not the case with his illness the more that he tries to deny it the worse it becomes until his old friend steps in to take care of him. I assume that if he had not run into Clerval he would go on being terrified of the creature and not addressing his illness until death takes him. Along with running from his problems he also runs from love. He attempts to ignore his loved ones in a chance that he will not get hurt from the relationship which is carried through to his relationship with the creature seen as though he ignores him out of fear. The two instances that I have mentioned are paralleled and can be traced throughout the story and Victor’s life.
Reflection: This was a bit difficult because thinking in depth on such a refined topic forced me to think deeper but there is obviously more digging in even such a small quotation that can be done. I have found that there is a lot of value in analyzing a small amount of material and relating it to the rest of the novel. I wonder if the critics mentioned in the appendix read the story in such depth but in reference to every line or if they merely skimmed through it and made there assumptions.
