I Got Fired and Now I'm Here...

I got fired from my full time job yesterday, and honestly it's about damn time I think. I've worked in customer service, retail, and food service since graduating high school. While I went to college and recently graduated with my second bachelor's degree in Communications, paired with my first in Creative Writing, I haven't done much in my writing life this year beyond finishing my first poetry collection and submitting it to various contests, residencies, etc. It's been months of rejections, rough attempts to tweak what I called "tiny failures," and sleepless nights where I wondered did I waste the last two and half years writing something that so many have called incomplete. And then I get fired a week before Thanksgiving.

I should be relieved to finally be free of an industry that caused me to stress and neglect myself, along with my writing goals and aspirations. But in the current state of the U.S. economy, I'm terrified. Sure, I could write to my heart's content now until the next opportunity comes along. But when will that be? When will my work get recognition worthy of getting paid to do what I'm most passionate for?

As a 20-something, getting closer to being a 30-something, I find myself constantly stuck in the same toxic environments, exhausting routines, and empty support systems that don't enrich me creatively year after year. I keeping telling myself that there must be more to life than just waking up and working for the rich until I die. That I'm destined to be more than a fulfillment source for everyone else's needs while excluding my own. But how can I when all I have is a vision without an execution plan?
