Evaluation

When we were first given this task I knew straight away what idea I wanted to do for the final images. I found that I was able to find some really good photographers that influenced me to create the idea that I have, I picked two pretty big/famous photographers for this but I found whilst I was carrying out this project I found I was also looking at other photographers which influenced my work in the past also influenced my final images. 

I am happy with the idea that I had for my FMP as I believe it shows how I have grown and progressed from the beginning of this course. When I first started I hated shooting on film and I really just hated shooting on film overall because I found that I couldn’t shoot on film as the images would always come out either really over exposed or underexposed.  Deciding to do film for my FMP was a big deal for me as I felt as if I was taking more of a risk and using my weaknesses as a strength. 

I then created my project proposal and a three month plan of what I will be wanting to achieve over the time I was working on this project. I did find that unfortunately I didn’t actually stick to the plan whilst doing this project and done only what I could fit in around college and half term when it came to the shooting side of things.  This was when I started to panic about choosing film and the studio for my FMP as I found that I was starting to struggle with being able to get the models into college and buying the film as for a while the college didn’t actually have any in stock. 

When looking at my final images for this project I find that I believe that they have come out really well. There are some things that I could have done for improvement and these are:  - Having the models all dead in the middle of the image - Making sure the backgrounds of the images were all the same colour before shooting - On a couple of the images I found that the models faces are very white/bright I could have edited this or checked the lighting a bit better before shooting the images - Got the final images printed out professionally so that they are better quality as to what they are  - On the face on portrait have the lights turned round slightly as they are getting shadows on the eyes All of these things are small simple things that if I had thought about it at the time and had the funds to do so I could have re-shot and made these images as good as they can be. If I was able to do this again or if I had the time to re-shot these would be things I would make sure I have done. 

I don’t actually have as many final images for this as I would have liked to have for this project. There are a couple of reasons as to why I couldn’t have as many final images as I planned: - I couldn’t get as many models as I would have wanted - I didn’t budget well enough to keep buying the film - I struggled to get the models that I had into the studio to shoot for the images because of work and school - The studios at college kept getting booked up and I was missing out on being able to use unfortunately this is all stuff that could have avoided if I had planned for it fully ahead of time. This was my fault for not sticking to the plans that I had made for this. From not doing as many test shoots as I had planned to do I don’t have any images to really show that I have progressed from, from the beginning of this project. I had one shoot in which I shot on 120 which is another test shoots but I don’t have the images uploaded on my blog.  

Overall I am happy with how my project came out, I’m happy with how my overall images came out because I am proud of how the film came out and how I was able to put them together to create the images that I have for my finals. The written work that I have done could have been a little bit better but these are things I should have worked on over the whole of this project. I believe that this project went well overall and I am happy with how it all came out.

Digital Manipulation

All of the digital manipulation was the same for this project so I didn’t want to keep uploading the same thing for each different edit. I would use the spot healing tool and the clone stamp mainly. Then towards the end I would just put them both on the same page and crop at the end to make the images as they are.

Contact sheets for my FMP:  For each of the different models that I had I made them all their own contact sheet as I refer to them as their own shoot. Eventhough I would have shot 2 models on one film I didn’t put them together so that you can clearly see all of the finals have come from.

Attempt on 35mm: I decided to have ago shooting on 35mm film for this as well so I was able to see what the outcome would look like and to see if I preferred the outcome of these images compared to the 120. Looking at the images I decided that I did not like how they came out as they were very dark and had to be edited a lot in photoshop so that you were actually able to see the models faces. Where I shot outside on location had a lot of effect on how the images came out where I wasn’t able to control the lighting, I didn’t get the look that I was looking for and the images have a lot of unwanted shadow where I didn’t think about where the sun was going to be when shooting the images.

If I had spent a little longer on these images when shooting them I believe I could have had a better outcome than I did achieve, where I was thinking about it as only a test shoot and a first attempt at what I could have used as a final I didn’t put as much effort in as I could have.

I believe that these images aren’t the worse images that could have come out of the film and still work/still are effective to what I was trying to get across but I would not be using these as final images for my fmp. I have decided that I will not be shooting on 35mm and will stick to 120 for my finals.

Artist Study - Moodboard - Rankin

Artist Study - Rankin - Image three

When looking at this image I find that one of the first things you look at is the line down the middle of the photo where Rankin has made it look like it is almost two different images. By doing this he is drawing your attention to the middle of the photo and then to the model on the right. The way that he has done the image in black and white has made the image effective because there is nothing else to distract you from the model.

I believe that the lighting in this image is more natural, the way that only one half of the model has been lit up and the way that this has been shot on location makes me believe this. Even though the other side of the model isnt in complete darkness this makes me wonder if there has been another light used to make this effect. 

When looking through Rankin’s work I don’t believe this is a typical image done by him because of the way the model is only on half of the image instead of using up the whole of the room. The way that he has shoot the image on location as well isn’t something that he does all the time so doesn’t make it a typical image.

I like this image but it isn’t my favorite by him, I don’t really like the way he has gotten the model to sit more over to the side of the image instead of being in the middle of the photo for a portrait shot.

Artist Study - Rankin - Image two

When you first look at this image you are instantly drawn to either the mirror where you are able to actually see the portrait of the model or the legs and feet of them. I believe that you are instantly drawn into these because they are the main points of the image. I think that this was Rankin’s plan as he has both of these things in the middle of the picture. 

I believe that the lighting in these images are a mixture between artificial and natural lighting. The way that you are able to see any lights in the image make me believe that there is also natural used and the way that they have achieved the shadows that they have also. I believe that artificial has been used because of the shadows also. I believe the lighting of this image makes it very effective and works well. 

When looking through Rankin’s work I don’t believe that this is a typical photo that he would take for his portraits. I couldn’t see another image that looks like this one when I was looking through his work. The way the model is posing though is a typical look for him.

I really like this image, I think it is something different and a different way to shoot portraiture. I believe that it is a really effective way to shoot. I wouldn’t want to shoot like this for my work but I believe it is a different way to shoot and would like to keep it in mind for the future.

Artist Study - Rankin - Image one

When you first look at this image I find that one of the first things that you are drawn into is the models hair and the ears on her head. I believe this is because her hair is the most colourful part of the image as the rest of it is either skin on black. The way the background is also a black makes her hair stand out a lot more. 

The lighting in this image is definitely lit with artificial lighting, you can tell this by the way that there are no shadows on the model at all, even where her hair is falling over here there are still no shadows being formed. I believe that there would have been a light hitting the background also to give it the look that it has just behind her to then having the rest of it also a lot darker. 

When looking through Rankin’s portrait work this is a typical image of his, the way he has gotten his model to look at the camera is a typical thing for him to do in his images. The way that he has the model using up all the space in his photo is also something he does a lot in his work. 

When I look at this image it catches my almost instantly, I really like this image and I believe there is so much that I like about it. The way the model is posing in the image, the lighting and the background. I mainly like the way the image has been lit, I think it works really well with the model and gives off a really nice look and feel to the overall outcome of the image. This is the kind of look I would like to achieve for my work.
