Dogs Of War

   She had to wonder what the girl was doing    in town, it wasn’t like this place was had lots    of new people showing up all the time. But    she didn’t ask, and instead just answered    their question.

                   “Oh, well I uh, I know a small hotel                      not too far from here. I could give                      you directions, or show you, if you                      would like.”

     A smile grew on her face. Hopefully Alex       wouldn’t be in town too long; she didn’t       plan on staying more than a week maximum.       But it might help to have someone who lived       here to ask a few questions to. About the       people here; about any strange happenings;       the usual.

          “That would be great. I mean -- if you can            show me to it.” A pause. “Can I ask your name?"

At the other speaking up, the girl doesn’t exactly know what to do. Striking up conversation doesn’t sound like he best idea, considering the weird vibe, but it wasn’t going to hurt anyone, was it? ( Besides, they seemed to be nice, at least, at this point. )

             “Y-Yeah, I’m uh, I’m fine. Are uh, are you?”

     Good. A response. It was something.       Something that, hopefully. would end       up diffusing the awkwardness. It didn’t       tell Alex why the other was so worried,       however. But don’t push, she reminded       herself.

          “Yeah -- yeah I’m alright. Just kind of            tired. You wouldn’t happen to know            anywhere I could stay around here?            Any sort of hotel or motel...?”

   For some reason, this person seems to give off a weird vibe.      So Iris chooses to keep her distance, an obviously worried        expression on the fairy’s face as she looks the other over.

     She sees the wary look on the others face,       a clear indication she should let the other       have her distance. Alex herself is slightly       unnerved. It was difficult to put her finger on       exactly why -- it could just be the tense       atmosphere. Maybe it would be best to clear       the air; to present herself as non threatening       as possible. 

          “Hi -- erm. Are.. are you okay?” Stupid question.

          “Well I’ve had it since I was born, I’m            pretty sure.”

      Rain was still curious as to why the other       wanted to know, but she didn’t question       the other. She seemed a little more comfortable       now anyways, and that made Rain a little       more relaxed.

          “Oh, cool. I can’t imagine a child with            fire powers was that inconspicuous.”

     Body language, a giant smile, a glint in       her eye -- it all showed just how happy       and relaxed she felt already. Alex didn’t       perceive the other as a threat. At least,       not at that moment. Pyrokensis being       used against you could be very harmful.

   “Negative to both questions. Nobody     can ever really know what’s going on     in her head, so to figure out why she     left or where she went is like trying to     find a very small needle in a very large     haystack.”

       She didn’t mind the asking, it was        just that part of her felt like she had       driven the other woman away by some       sort of means. It was necessary to get       over the feeling, however– she couldn’t       keep it around on any hunts, or risk the       creatures she’s tracking getting the best       of her.

             “Work, mostly. Helping some               other hunters, and whatnot.”

     She gave a thoughtful nod. There were       many people who had come and gone in       these past few months, with varying reasons.       From what she remembered of Janet last       time they had seen each other, she had       seemed completely fine. So to here she had       uped and left without much explanation it was....       strange. Curiousity was building but Alex       decided to ignore it for now.

          “I feel like I’ve been out of touch with            most of the hunters. Its a shame --            I’ve probably missed out on some stuff.           Anything big going on?”

     The Heavenhound was keyed into the larger       events. But the definition of a ‘big occurence’       changed from person to person. It couldn’t hurt       to find out what had been going on while she       was away.

          It almost feels weird, to go ahead and tell           someone she’s just met about her powers,           but apparently this person has powers too,           so why not.

                  “Oh, well that’s pretty cool, I guess. I’m                    pretty sure the word for what I have is                    pyrokensis. I have control over fire, and                    that kind of thing…”

          “Oh -- that’s pretty cool. How           long have you had this power?”

     Now her irritated confusion had      lifted, she felt geniunely curious       about the other and her power.      It was a trait of Heavenhounds      to be overly inquizitive.

      “Yeah. Not entirely sure she’ll         be back, either.”

      But she’d gotten used to the       quiet in the house, and had       even tried filling it by getting       a couple of pets– both, of whom,       were strangely quiet. Oh well,       she’d solve that issue later.

            “I’m– I’ve been better.              Tired, mostly.”

          “I’m -- I’m sorry to hear it.            Any idea why she left? Or            where she went to?”

     Curiosity led her to ask. It was      unlikely she’d go searching for       the other any time soon. After      all, if she had left, she had left      for a reason. And if she wanted      to come back, she would have.

          “Oh right. What have you            been up to.”

“If you’re looking for a certain blonde,  she hasn’t been around these parts  for a long time, friend.”

          “Oh -- right.”

     For a moment her thoughts wander      to where she could be, how she was.      This had been more of a social call       than any sort of business. It had been       a while -- maybe it was foolish to have       believed she would still be here.

          “But you’re here. How you doing?”

               Well that question definitely caught Rain off                guard. And considering she hadn’t done                anything that might reveal that she had powers                in the past few minutes, the question also                scared her a little. How would this girl know?

                     “P-Powers? I uh, who’s asking?”

     Oh no -- that was fear she could see in       the others body language. She hadn’t       meant to worry her. 

          “No, no, don’t worry. I’m not gonna hurt            you or anything. You could say I sort of            have powers too. And one of them... well            I can kinda... sense the power I guess?”

               he can sympathize – los santos is a big city.                the only reason he knows his way around so                well is because of how often he has to evade                the cops. best not mention that, though.

          “Some cafe not far from here            -- I think it’s called Blue’s”

     It was a new cafe, that had sprung       up overnight. Above, there was a       small apartment where she hoped       to find the person she was looking       for. Not an urgent case -- just some       business that needed to be taken       care of.

          “Yeah, I’m just a little lost.” 

     She had been looking for an       address somewhere around       the area. Or more specifically,       the being who lived there, but       he didn’t need to know that.

      Glancing up at the other, Rain raises an eyebrow       the question is a little random, and it seems a little       weird to her. “Uh, yeah, I’m alright.” She replied,       offering a small smile. “Are you okay?”

     In order to seem a little more normal      after such an out of the blue question,       Alex returned the smile. However she       was still wondering how to get answers       to what was truly troubling her. Could       she just... ask directly?

          “Good. I’m fine... I’m just wonderin’           something. Are -- Do you have some           sort of... power.”

          “Hey -- um, are you -- okay?” 

     Alex would rather have asked if she       was entirely human but, through       experience, she had learned that       question was considered extremely       strange.

          ❝ and i didn’t even get a chance to tidy up. ❞

               she chances a smile, glad there isn’t anything                serious going on. angels are always so stoic;                one look at their faces would make you think                someone had just died, and usually, someone had.

          ❝ so – you need to ask me something or are you just                gonna look around and see what’s up? ❞

     The smile was not returned, although       she was glad to see it on the others face.       Made this whole thing feel less like an       interrogation.

          “No questions -- no offence, but I’m not            sure I can 100% trust your answers.”

     Typically demons weren’t the most truthful.       Maybe this one was different, but at this       moment in time, Alex couldn’t chance that.       A lot of people could die -- it had happened       before. Plus she wanted to get out of here as       fast as possible. Which wouldn’t happen if she       found out all her questions had been answered       with lies.

               she surveys the hound with a tired gaze,                pale fingers running through bright red locks.                she can’t say she isn’t surprised, but she’s hardly                worried about the situation. she’s done nothing                to draw attention to herself in a while.

          ❝ —- i’m guesing you’re not here for a friendly chat, huh? ❞

     The hound stares back, eyes running       over the worn out form of the other.       This was possibly one of the most irritating      jobs she had -- checking up on the more       demonic of earth’s inhabitants. Usually       they’re hostile, but from what she can see,       there’s not much of a threat here right now. 

     That certainly made everything easier.

          “More of a routine check.”
