Buying on eBay: Sport Coats Pt 1
A How To Guide by Acute Style
“Buy low, look fly” is the motto at Acute Style. I do a lot of shopping at thrift stores and discount retailers to get the look for less. Of all my haunts, eBay is my go to place for high quality wares on the cheap. Here’s how I approach finding sport coats.
The main drawback of shopping online is the inability to try before you buy. That’s why buying a sport coat on eBay is all about the numbers. When you’re searching on eBay, use your normal size as a search parameter. Keep in mind that a 38 R at H&M does not fit the same as a 38R from Orvis. So to ensure a decent fit, you must know four sport coat measurements: armpit to armpit (chest), shoulder seam to shoulder seam (shoulders), shoulder seam to sleeve cuff (sleeves) and bottom of collar to bottom of jacket (length). Take these from your best fitting sport coat. Here’s a measurement guide from Ask Andy About Clothes.
Most sellers on eBay will list these four measurements with every sport coat. If they don’t, I always contact them and ask for the measurements. I allow for a margin of error of at most ½ an inch. If they don’t respond or I get the sense they don’t know how to measure, I usually don’t buy from them. I’ve taken risk in the past and they rarely pay off. Proceed at your own risk.
Most sport coats won’t match your measurements perfectly. A tailor can adjust the jacket for a better fit, but it will cost you. It varies from shop to shop, but my guy in Manhattan charges $50 for taking in/letting out chest, $75 for taking in shoulders, $50 to lengthen/shorten sleeves and $50 shorten the length of a jacket.
When buying a jacket you need to consider the base price and alterations. I pretty much always pass on jackets that don’t fit me in the shoulders and body length. The shoulders are too expensive to fix and changing the length of a jacket can sometimes throw off the proportions. I’ll consider having either the chest or sleeves adjusted, but usually not both unless it’s an exceptional jacket. Alteration prices can add up quickly so getting the best fit with as little tailoring as possible is the way to go.
I hope this guide will help you get the best out of eBay. Good luck and let me know what you find. Keep your eyes open for my guides soon.
