Samantha nodded in vague understanding, definitely curious to learn more about Alfie's project as it grew into something more serious and real. "Come on now, Alfie, don't go twisting the meaning of what I was trying to say," she insisted with a little pout. He seemed to have a habit of doing that. "I really am sorry for waking you at this hour," she quickly added in an apologetic manner. "And so violently too... but of course you understand it was a life or death situation. I'm glad you could help the little one the way you did," her eyes wandering over to the bundle of blankets again. "And thank you for being so welcoming to me and letting me stay," she fiddled with the comfortable loose sleeve of his hoodie as she said it, looking up at him with an appreciative but bashful smile. "I'm very grateful to you."
Alfie let out a soft laugh, low and quiet, the kind that rumbled in his chest. “I mean, can you blame me for twisting your words? You practically handed it to me,” he said, eyes glinting with mischief. “Besides, at this point I’m pretty sure you’d miss it if I stopped.” It was practically a whole personality trait. He watched her with quiet amusement. There was something about the way she huffed and puffed at him that he clearly found entertaining, even if he didn’t say so outright.
Tilting his head, Alfie continued to study her with the keen eye that she'd already pulled him up on, a thread of curiosity curling beneath the teasing. “So what did you think of me before all this, hm?” he asked, brow arching. “Be honest. I’ve already been insulted by the best. You couldn't possibly beat some of the one liners I've had thrown my way. Comes with the territory.”
Then almost imperceptibly his tone shifted. Gradual and less playful to more serious and genuine when guilt seemed to gnaw at Sam once more. “Really, though… it’s fine. The wake-up call,” he said, shrugging a shoulder. “I’m used to running on not much sleep.” The way he said it made it clear that it wasn’t by choice. Just something he’d simply grown accustomed to. "So please, stop apologizing, Sam,” he added, his gaze holding hers a moment longer than before. “I would’ve done the same for anyone.”
A beat passed, and the corner of his mouth tugged into a smirk that prefaced his next comment.
“Well… any creature.”
