Writing tips: Let bodies do the talking

Body language is one of the most powerful tools you can use in your writing, especially when it comes to dialogue.

It reveals emotion without needing long explanations, and it gives your characters presence long before they speak.

Here are some physical cues you can use to bring your scenes to life:

Crossed arms / defensive stance → guarded, annoyed, uncertain

Fidgeting with sleeves / tapping fingers → nervous, impatient

Lingering touches / brushing hands → affection, tension, desire

Tightened jaw / clenched fists → anger, restraint, frustration

Averted eyes / looking at the floor → guilt, fear, embarrassment

Stepping back / leaning away → distrust or discomfort

Tilting head / raised eyebrows → curiosity, challenge

Shoulders relaxing / exhaling slowly → relief, vulnerability

When should you rely on body language?

When you want to show an emotion instead of naming it

When dialogue alone feels flat

When you need subtext (what they won’t say out loud)

When two characters feel differently than the words they’re speaking

When you want to make a scene more sensory and grounded

Are they really calm, or is their foot tapping like a warning signal? Are they truly angry, or is it just the way their jaw tightens when they’re hurt? Are they saying “I’m fine,” but refusing to meet anyone’s eyes?

Body language adds layers. It tells the truth when your characters won’t. It can add to the rage bubbling on their lips, letting the reader know when they're just about to blow up.

Use it intentionally, and your scenes will read less like conversations on a stage and more like real people breathing on the page.

How to use Em Dash (—) and Semi Colon ( ; )

Since the ai accusations are still being thrown around, here's how i personally like to use these GASP ai telltales. 🦄✨

Em Dashes (—)

To emphasize a shift / action / thought.

They're accusing us—actually accusing us—of using AI.

To add drama.

They dismissed our skills as AI—didn't even think twice, the dimwits—and believed they were onto something.

To insert a sudden thought. Surely they wouldn't do that to us—would they?

To interrupt someone's speech. "Hey, please don't say that. I honed my craft through years of blood and tears—" "Shut up, prompter."

To interrupt someone's thoughts / insert a sudden event.

We're going to get those kudos. We're going to get those reblogs—

A chronically online Steve commented, “it sounds like ai, idk.”

Semi Colons ( ; )

To join two closely related independent sentences / connect ideas.

Not only ChatGPT is capable of correct punctuation; who do you think it learned from in the first place?

Ultimate pro tip: use them whenever the fudge you want. You don't owe anyone your creative process. 🌈

Writing tips: He said, she said...

Readers don't tend to notice 'said', while it's there in the sentence, it doesn't give the sentence any life. It gets the job done, mostly...

Here are some options to try!

whispered / muttered / mumbled → soft or secretive

shouted / yelled / barked → anger, urgency

growled / hissed → danger, teasing, frustration

murmured / breathed → intimacy, vulnerability

snapped / barked / snapped back → irritation, defensiveness

laughed / chuckled / giggled → laughing, fun, playful or flirty

asked / questioned / queried / inquired → curiosity, questioning

demanded / insisted → authority or control

sighed / groaned → fatigue, exasperation, longing

When you're looking to replace said, think about why. You'll generally want to do this when you need the following:

when the tone of the line needs more context.

when you want to show emotion instead of telling it.

when your character’s body language, action, or expression can do the talking instead.

Take a look at the scene you're writing, is the character saying their line? Or are they yelling it? Screaming it? Are they enraged, or perhaps is their voice a broken whisper from grief?

That being said, you shouldn't always avoid using 'said.' It's easy to read in long sentences, and it keeps the focus on the dialogue rather than the rest of the scenes. That may be beneficial and a key component to parts of your story.

Neutral:

Stated - A clear, factual declaration. Replied - A direct response to someone. Answered - A direct response to someone. Inquired - Asked a question, usually seeking information. Explained -Clarified or elaborated on something. Whispered - Spoke quietly.

Happy:

Cheered - Spoke with joy and excitement. Giggled - Spoke while laughing lightly. Beamed - Spoke with happiness.

Angry:

Snapped - Spoke sharply, usually in anger or frustration. Barked - Spoke in a short, harsh, commanding tone. Growled - Spoke in a low, angry tone, resembling a growl. Hissed - Spoke in a whisper-like tone, often with anger or menace. Retorted - Responded sharply, often in disagreement or defense. Sighed - Spoke with a heavy exhale. Whispered - Spoke quietly (not inherently angry, but can be). Screech - Screamed in a long, loud, high-pitched, and often unpleasant sound. Sobbed - Spoke through tears. Cried - Spoke with sorrow or emotional pain. Cried out - Shouted suddenly due to pain, shock, fear. Whimpered - Spoke softly, with pain or sadness. Sniffled - Spoke while trying to hold back tears. Lamented - Expressed deep regret or sorrow. Sighed - Spoke with a heavy exhale. Choked - Spoke with difficulty, often because of emotion. Breathed - Spoke softly. Screech - Screamed in a long, loud, high-pitched, and often unpleasant sound. Shrieked - Screamed in a short, loud, high-pitched cry or sound, typically produced in sudden fear, pain, anger, or excitement

Surprised:

Gasped - Spoke while catching breath. Exclaimed - Spoke suddenly, loudly. Blurted - Spoke without thinking. Cried out - Shouted suddenly due to pain, shock, fear. Stammered - Spoke hesitantly, struggling due to shock. Uttered - Spoke briefly, often in disbelief. Breathed - Spoke softly. Echoed - Repeated something in surprise, trying to process it. Squeaked - Spoke in a short, high-pitched sound.

Fearful:

Whispered - Spoke quietly. Stammered - Spoke with hesitation, fear causing the words to stumble. Gasped - Spoke in a quick breath, startled or frightened. Pleaded -Spoke in a desperate, fearful tone, asking for something. Cried out - Spoke or shouted suddenly, reacting to fear. Breathed - Spoke in a shallow, tense manner, often showing anxiety. Begged - Asked for something urgently, humbly, or desperately. Squeaked - Spoke in a short, high-pitched sound. Screech - Screamed in a long, loud, high-pitched, and often unpleasant sound. Shy:

Murmured - Spoke quietly, almost too softly to hear. Mumbled - Spoke unclearly, here due to nervousness or shyness. Whispered - Spoke in a very low, timid voice. Hesitated - Paused before speaking, unsure or shy. Stuttered - Spoke with difficulty, due to nervousness or embarrassment. Breathed - Spoke softly.

Thoughtful:

Observed - Made a thoughtful or insightful comment. Remarked - Made a casual or insightful comment. Suggested - Offering an idea or recommendation. Noted - Pointed out something of importance. Murmured - Spoke quietly, (in thought, often to themselves) almost too quiety to hear.

Commanding:

Ordered - Gave a command or instruction. Demanded - Insisted on something firmly or forcefully. Directed - Gave specific instructions or guidance. Commanded - Gave an authoritative order; a directive, or control over a situation or group.
