Amplify the angst

I've read a lot of works where writers try to add to angst by making the character experience one bad thing after another.

Or sometimes after resolution, it feels like the events never even happened. Like they just woke up from a bad dream and went about their day.

When that happens, the story feels flat. Characters don't get the development (or breakdown) they deserve. Letting one experience linger might prove to be more effective.

Make the experience traumatise them.

Let it subtly affect new experiences, new relationships, or follow them wherever they go. Just because it was 'cleared up', doesn't mean the impact goes away immediately.

Trust issues, memories, flashbacks, hesitation, stutters, CPTSD/PTSD or similar symptoms.

Don't provide resolution to the event, even after it ended. Drag it out across subplots, if you have to. Trauma doesn't heal in a day.

Emotion should exist after the goodbye.

Time heals all wounds, but regret eats us alive.

Could the damage still exist in the next scene?
