Amelia had no idea why Alice would have been avoiding the lake, and worried that maybe she’d made a mistake proposing it for their afternoon stroll. “How come you haven’t been? We could always head another direction, if you don’t want to face it just now,” she asked with a frown. This particularly made her realize how out of touch with her friends she’d grown lately, that she didn’t even know what Alice was going on about. 

The love and reverence in Alice’s voice at the mention of Frank was so obvious, it almost hurt to listen to. But it was the good kind of hurt, the kind that reminded her that there was good in the world and that at the end of the day love like theirs was worth fighting for every day. “That sounds dreamy. I’m really happy for you two, he speaks of you like you hung the moon honestly. Although you’re wrong about one thing – you might be the one person in this castle who does deserve him. And I don’t think he could do without you either, believe me. Don’t think he ever has, considering the years he’s spent going on and on about you.” She smiled, a true and genuine smile if not a little sad, feeling touched by the warmth in her friend’s tone, which gave her the distinct impression that something close to fate was touching them in that moment. 

“Oh, nothing as exciting as a new romance. I’ve been… working on NEWTs, obviously, and Head duties with Frank. Things have been a bit more complicated lately for me, in the castle, but at least it’s consolidated one thing – I– I think I want to be an Auror when I get out of here,” she said hesitantly. Some of her friends were starting to know that about her, but she was always a bit anxious to bring it up with people who hadn’t been close enough to see the shift in her lately. Everyone expected her to be a teacher or a healer, to the extent that she’d had to face disappointment in some of her friends’ faces at the announcement she wanted to be a fighter. 

“oh amelia -- no” she sighed, the mortification kicking in - she was being ridiculous, it was a lake - not some cosmic negative force in her life, “i’m being weirdly superstitious” she chuckled, shaking her head, “seriously - some air by the lake would do me some good” earnest as she gave the girl a smile and carried out the doors.  

“he’s dreamy” she was completely and utterly smitten -- “amelia, i’m really not this much of a sap” she sighed, but wasn’t that just the reality of being in love - there was no control and she’s rather spend her days praising his existence in her life than be without him for a moment.  amelia bones was nothing if not genuine and those words just warmed her heart to a point that had her bubbling with joy, wrapping and arm around her, she hugged her side tightly, “thank you” she breathed out, it didn’t feel like enough but for her to say that - it meant everything, “i really want to kick younger me --” she admitted quietly, shaking her head at how ridiculous she had been - so hellbent that he didn’t want her like that, they had wasted so much time, “how didn’t i see it?” 

she didn’t want to bask in the past - no, she wanted to move forward and she was more than ecstatic to talk about amelia’s dreams, “amelia - really? complicated, how?” she questioned, stopping for a second as she was a mixture of concern and awe, “oh lovey, you would be a BRILLIANT auror--” she wasn’t sure what amelia had wanted out of life- it wasn’t ever something they had the chance to talk about, so she wasn’t one to assume, but hearing this - seeing how she led the school and carried herself, she knew that this could be brilliant, “amelia bones, you’re going to do so much good in this world -- this is just the first step!”

Marley chuckled. “Of course it’s not odd, Alice.” She told her with a smile. “It’s sad.” She said with a pout. “Can’t you just fail your classes and stay another year?” Marlene asked her friend. “You know you want to!” She said with a bright smile and a light shove. 

“marley love -- i sound like an arse saying this, but i don’t know how to fail?” she chuckled, “it’s like a thing, i just can’t do it - that and my parents might just lose it.  i’m going to miss you, of course i would stay if i could, but that’s growing up, right? things are gone in a flash --” 

“-- but you get another year, and i still have this one to make the most of, right?” she murmured, wrapping her arms around her, “how are things in the world of marlene?”

“a  victory  kiss?  why,  ms.  lightwood,  you  can  have  two––”  frank  grins,  jumping  up  from  where  he’d  been  sitting  to  gather  her  up  into  a  fierce  hug,  and  then  planted  a  kiss  square  on  her  lips.  “i  missed  you  so  much––  you  were  FANTASTIC  out  there––  did  y’see  my  sign?”  he’d  borrowed  some  craft  supplies  from  younger  students  to  make  the  red  and  gold  glitter-bombed  monstrosity,  with  letters  charmed  to  flash  and  sparkle  out  the  phrase  ‘light  as  a  feather,  quick  on  a   broom,  go  lightwood’.  what  he  lacked  in  slogan - coining  skills,  he’d  certainly  made  up  in  cheering  her  on  the  whole  time,  as  if  the  entire  gryffindor  team  consisted  of  alice  and  only  alice.

oh godric, his smile was contagious. she couldn’t stop the way she threw herself into his arms, hugging him just as tight -- smile merely widening against his lips as she wrapped her arms around his frame easily, she could stand on her toes all she wanted and yet reaching frank longbottom’s height was no easy task - merlin, had she missed him, “i feel like i haven’t seen you in ages--” the pout at her lips was childish at best, maybe she was being a tad dramatic, she had been just as busy -- but seeing him just reminded her of how much she missed him. 

“frankie - it was brilliant” adoration pouring into every word as she pressed a kiss against his jaw, “really - i may have lost the snitch at one point because of that glitter spectacle” she whispered, eyes twinkling as she tugged back every so slightly, “it was gorgeous and creative-- you didn’t have to do that” she added, she was still taken back by the little things he did, whether it was glitter spectacle or simply taking a second to walk her to class - even if it was out of his way, frank was the most attentive boy she had ever met and it still had her swooning. taking his hand in hers, she tugged him away from the crowd, “do you think you might be able to spare some time for your girlfriend, headboy?”

Bella gave the girl an unimpressed look as she started to laugh, she was serious and didn’t believe that Potter could get his team together enough to play a game like that without some kind of help. “Right, honor,” She replied with an eye roll, she knew as much from Emma that she tried to play the game fair but the Slytherin knew that with friends like hers on the team, someone was bound to go about cheating for the win. “Right, because Saint Potter has great leadership skills,” Her tone was incredibly sarcastic, she doubted that Potter’s right hand man, her own disowned cousin would play Slytherin without his stupid tricks up his sleeve.

“yeah - honour” she emphasized as she gave the girl a look of her own, “i know it’s not a word you’re really familiar with, but some of us do take it seriously --” 

“--and we clearly played better than slytherin did today, didn’t we? think he’s doing a FANTASTIC job” she shrugged, bitterness was always a fascinating sight, and as much as alice tried earnestly to conduct herself with kindness and patience - when it came to the girl before her, she was at her wits end.

With a sigh, Lily conceded, “I suppose you’re right. We have plenty of time to make the points up. Still, the boys better not make too much trouble this year, we can’t afford it. And I absolutely refuse to lose the Cup to Slytherin of all Houses.” She normally wasn’t one to participate much in House rivalries, but with the way some of the Slytherin students were acting lately made her less generous than usual. Grinning widely as she remembered their glorious victory, she replied, “Well, we certainly will if you keep on playing like that. You were absolutely brilliant on the pitch this weekend, love, what a catch!” Lily’s Quittitch-mania was known to very few, but Alice was one of the people she trusted with it.

Lily rolled her eyes good-naturedly and scooped up a pastry to nibble on while they talked. “Glad to hear it,” she said with a smile, thinking fondly of her friend. “I’m sure being Head Boy is stressful, but Dumbledore certainly made a wonderful choice. He’s great with the other prefects,” she said. Shrugging at the question, Lily answered honestly. “I headed off to bed early, I’m afraid.” Taking a moment to consider, she finally confessed, “I had a horribly bad feeling the entire day…like something bad was coming, you know? It was all very strange.”

“maybe don’t ask them to do that?” she chuckled wearily, “asking them to not make trouble might make them want to make trouble - it’s like dealing with children all over again - maybe mention it to remus?” if anyone could be discreet, it was remus. alice teeth sunk into her lip as she tried to muffle her laughter -- “lily love --” she admonished, “can i know what our dear slytherins did to anger your soul?” she mused, she couldn’t deny it - there was something horrifying about the idea of losing to slytherin - she’d rather ravenclaw or hufflepuff take the victory, but she couldn’t really place why her disdain was so strong at times - there was bellatrix - but she was just one of the few faces, yet the rivalry was stronger between their houses than any others. smile bright as her cheeks flushed the appraise - alice never really knew how to take a compliment, “we have a good team” grinning, “-- i had a good day” she added, “but thanks babe, really - means alot” she murmured, as she leaned over to give her arm a squeeze. 

“lily, he’s so good at it --” she gushed, eyes twinkling - maybe she was a tad biased considering she was his number one fan, but frank earned all the merit that he got, “really - you should see him with the first years - he’s so patient, you know? it’s not a chore to him - dumbledore made the best choice he could and he’s going to do it again when you get selected next year --” grinning as she waggled her brows. lily would be the perfect choice and she didn’t doubt that for a second. joy soon slipping as the concern sunk in, she scooted her chair forward to listen to the girl, “really?” she murmured, “did something happen?” she questioned - not sure how to ask if it was severus again -- “do you think something is coming?” she questioned softly, brows furrowing - she couldn’t say that she felt lily’s concern was out of place - considering what was happening in their very halls, it was a valid fear.

“No, of course not,” Olivia replied, this year was bittersweet for a lot of them about to leave and head out for the real world. They would be leaving the school they had been attending for seven years for something new, it was bound to be sad. “It’s understandable to be sad about it. You just got to enjoy it while you can and make the best memories to look back on.”

alice couldn’t help the smile that soon took over fully -- she knew the sadness wasn’t really out of place - but it felt good to hear someone agree, “i know -- i shouldn’t really be getting so down, we’re barely through the first term --” she chuckled, shaking her head as she tried to physically shake the feeling. “how are you finding it so far? make any worthwhile memories?” merlin she needed a laugh.

“I don’t think it’s odd at all,” Peter smiled, leaning back on the couch. “You guys were brilliant out there,” he grinned. Of course he’d been there to cheer on the whole team; but more so to cheer on James and Sirius. “Got any plans for once you graduate?” he inquired. 

“the team played really well --” grinning wildly, “really - for our first match, that was bloody brilliant” they deserved a pat on the back - especially james, he was a great captain. “if i’m lucky, magical law enforcement - specifically an auror” she knew she needed to sound confident, that was the key to getting what she desired, but speaking amongst friends - voicing her dreams, she couldn’t help but hesitate, she was scared. what if she didn’t land what she wanted? then what.

While she wasn’t a fanatic for quidditch, Bella did enjoy watching games but today it wasn’t even a game with the way Slytherin played. She didn’t want to be anywhere near Emma when she got off the pitch and instead she found herself exiting the pitch near some of the Gryffindors celebrating, her eyes falling on the seeker in the middle. “Just wondering what spells were used for Potter to get this win,” the brunette replied when their eyes met, she didn’t exactly believe some of the players cheating their way to win, Potter seemed like someone who would do anything.

alice couldn’t help but chuckle at her what she was insinuating - didn’t last too long before she realized that she probably wasn’t kidding, “that’s a joke, right?” shrugging as she adjusted her newly bandaged wrist, the pressure relieving her of the pain that came with the victory. 

“we don’t need spells to win -- with quidditch there’s an honour code, you win because you’re talented, not because beating someone is more important-- so important that you have to cheat” it had been quite the win, slytherin hadn’t stood a chance, and maybe she could understand why someone could think that, but they didn’t operate like that - they won because they played the sport well, nothing more - nothing less.

Amelia looked at her with quirked brows and a secretive smile — “oh yeah, I’ve heard all about you being a bit too busy…” recollecting the amount of times Frank had foregone whatever reason there was for their meeting, in order to tell her all about Alice Lightwood’s lips and sense of humor. She grabbed her friend’s arm as they exited the Great Hall and walked towards the courtyard. “Let’s just hang out at the lake for a bit, if you have time. The weather’s so nice and I don’t know how long it’s going to hold.” 

As they settled into step together, the Hufflepuff didn’t even know where to start. “So — tell me what I’ve missed. Apart from the obviou— well, no, actually, I want to hear it all. How are you, are you happy? Is Frank treating you well?” she asked although she had very little doubt in her mind about that. Merlin only knew how long the boy had been in love with her for. What Amelia needed was just good, easy, simple news. News of budding relationship and hopeful futures. She needed a happy distraction so desperately lately. @alicelightwccd​

Alice would like to think that she had gotten a handle on the teasing quite some time ago, the whispers of oh look is its frank, oh honey - you look like a puppy, alice - you’re blushing babe, she had heard it all and how adorable it would be to be alice longbottom and yet now that she had the boy - now that it was real, her cheeks still heated up that embarrassing shade of red at the mere insinuation of him, “come on lovey, the hogwarts gossip mill is ridiculous - you can’t believe everything you hear --” she mused, easily falling into step with her as they headed to the lake, “that sounds wonderful - i’ve got to admit, i’ve been steering clear of the lake lately, but i think it would be nice to see it before winter hits” she was being a petulant child, but ever since their first fight at the lake - she had a hard time sneaking off for a swim let alone wandering near it. it wasn’t cursed and rational alice knew that - but the part of her that was terrified, waiting for the other shoe to drop - that part clung to that subtle new found superstition. 

“frank is just --” she started, shaking her head with a smile that shone nothing but adoration for him, “i don’t deserve him” she murmured, she wasn’t in a hole of self- pity, no those days were long behind her, but she was grateful to have him - to be loved by him. “you know - i know that they say that no person should be your everything” or at least that was what her mum had said, “but with him -- i don’t know how i did it before him” she admitted. she could on for hours and hours about how much she loved him and how lucky she was, but alice never wanted to be that girl - the one that was obsessed with their boyfriend, the one that was scarce for her friends, “enough about my cheesy heart - what’s been going on in the world of amelia bones?” she questioned, giving her arm a squeeze, “i want to hear EVERYTHING --”

“is it odd for me to say that i already miss it?” the smile painted on her lips was a mixture of joy and bittersweet sadness that was kicking in as each day passed by - that was her last first game. it not only registered when she was out there flying to her heart’s content, but as she was digging into her preliminary auror application work - she wasn’t going to be here in a year.

Lily plopped herself down in a seat directly across from Alice, huffing in irritation. “Have you seen the state of the House points right now?” she asked incredulously. “We’re in dead last, Alice. Dead last.” Everyone who knew Lily well knew that she had a competitive streak a mile wide, and the disparity in House points was sure to have her blood boiling. “I’m seriously thinking about starting to abuse my prefect privileges and handing out points willy-nilly. Ten points to Alice Lightwood for being so lovely.” 

Sighing, she paused for a breath and looked at Alice with a rueful smile. “Sorry. You know how I can get. How are you doing, love? How’s Frank? Did you enjoy yourself at the Halloween Party?

when lily sat herself down right in front of her with that look in her eye, all alice could do was put down her copy of advanced potion making and listen up with a sheepish smile tugging at her lips, “well love -- it’s still just the beginning” she offered, knowing very well that dead last was unacceptable and that they did need to change it soon enough. a chuckle slipping from her lips  - eyes widening rather comically, “lily --” she admonished , shaking her head wondering if the hourglass had updated, “we can’t - it’s not right and we both know we’re going to win the RIGHT WAY --” she promised. 

“oh, i do and i’ve missed the fierce passion  -- it’s quite the sight” she teased, propping her chin on the palm of her hand as she shut her textbook, a break wouldn’t hurt. “frank is frank -- i think he’s doing just fine” or at least he was the last they spoke, it was rare to see the boy down, “just a bit busy - headboy and all” shrugging as her smile widened at the mention of the party, “i had fun, i’ve got to say helga hufflepuff was a remarkable woman - wish i’d seen more of you, what were you off doing?”

she had an entire house to CELEBRATE with, but all her gaze was searching for was him -- nearly skipping as she finally set sights on him, “so, mr. longbottom - am i going to get a victory kiss?”  smile bright, as she stopped right before him. 

between catching up with work and looking into her auror application - she hadn’t seen as much of him as she would like, then again alice could spend every minute with him and still not think it’s enough, “missed you --”

She was COMPETITIVE to say the least - despite her often sweet nature and kind words, the girl was as ferocious as it came on the pitch, eyes always on the prize as the mischievous golden snitch fluttered in the air - driving her to win. FIRST MATCH AND IT WAS ALREADY A WIN -- heart beating erratic as the girl allowed herself to step away from the crowd and breathe - it wasn’t too long till she felt herself nearly topple over with the weight of the person who flung themselves on her -- “dorcas meadowes, light of my life - are you trying to kill me?”

“Alice Lightwood!” Amelia practically screamed when she saw the other witch sitting by herself in the Great Hall. Alice and Amelia had always gotten along, being in the same year and of the same mind on a lot of things. She considered the Gryffindor to be one of the people she’d keep in touch long after Hogwarts. Unfortunately the stress and tribulations of seventh year had somehow led them to drift apart; which, as Amelia was starting to realize, had happened to most of her friendships over the past few months. Between Amelia’s new duties as Head Girl and preparing for Auror training, and Alice’s… well, that was the problem, really: she didn’t even know what the girl was up to these days. Which is why she hurried to claim the empty seat next to her with a mischievous grin. “Hey, stranger. How many apologies will be enough apologies to excuse the fact that I’ve been a horrid friend lately, but would like to catch up?” she asked in the sweetest voice she could muster.

Alice had been DISTRACTED to say the least, between the halloween festivities and frank - she had not been on the top of her game, that’s what had her head first in her transfiguration textbook very much catching up - she wasn’t BEHIND, no that would be unspeakable, but she would have prepped the upcoming week by now and already made notes about the chapter. as happy as she was right now, her auror dreams were still very much on the horizon -- just about to flip the page when she heard someone screaming her name, straightening up as her eyes widened and she looked about confused to say the least -- “amelia” she chuckled, as she gave the girl a wave. 

smile widening as she stared at the girl rather fondly - amelia had always been a sweet girl, she wasn’t surprised to say the least when she landed the roll of head girl - it was well deserved, she was bright and she had a good head on her shoulders, “i’ll forgive you if you forgive me --” she offered, sheepish smile at her lips, “you’re not the only one whose been a bit too busy --” gaze glancing at the last few pages remaining of the chapter. she had gotten fairly far and she could make up for it during free period, “i would love too” packing away the book swiftly as she stood up and grabbed a muffin, “what shall we do?”

“MY DEAR LADY HELGA,” He replied with a crooked grin, turning from an actual Hufflepuff student he’d been reprimanding for totally bogarting the sugar quills. “For me? THANK YOU, I guess your house really is the nicest–– five points to Hufflepuff,” Frank quipped as he took a sip of the undoubtedly spiked drink, knowing that at least he was well on his way to repaying all the points he’d taken from Amos mere weeks before. Then, he wrinkles his nose and looks down into the cup of what was really more alcohol than punch. “Tastes like a detention––– please don’t tell me who tampered with it, ‘cause then I have to stop drinking it.” A grin, and he ducks down to brush a kiss against Alice’s cheek, handing her the cup back and reaching to pour one for himself. “FLATTERY? You know that works on me–– five more points to the house with the most beautiful founder. Careful, or you’ll end up skewing the house cup results… and then I’ll have to duel you.”

the FLUTTERING seemed to be a normal occurrence at this point, she thought that after sometime - this would feel normal, that she would grow used to that crooked smile that was nearly always meant for her, she stepped forward and gestured for the puffle to run while her boyfriend was otherwise DISTRACTED, “frank --” she whispered, eyes sparkling with amusement as she shook her head, “you can’t just give me points for being pretty --” whisper was hushed and her cheeks were flushed as she stepped forward - nearly closing the distance between them, “GODRIC OR NOT -- the point awarded will still be coming from YOU --” she really never understood how he didn’t see it - how alluring his charm and charisma was, how even his acts of kindness had her in a pile of lovestruck joy - 

she couldn’t help the laughter that spilled from her lips as his nose wrinkled adorably - she couldn’t help but stand on her toes to press a kiss against it, “it’s - pretty awful” she admitted sheepishly as she took the cup back, “you would think that they would get better with spiking it --” she sighed, eyes widening slightly as she realized what she had uttered, “not that i condone it --” she added, teeth sinking into her lip embarrassed as she pressed her face against his shoulder. only perking up at the mention of a duel, “babe, don’t start something you can’t finish --” eyes glancing up at his with excitement as her fingers ran along his jaw, “maybe you should keep going - we haven’t duelled in a while --” she was completely and utterly hopeless when it came down to control, she couldn’t help but wonder if that need would ever be satiated, “i miss it --”

Plus, I’M clearly the smart one of the group, Frank is the coolest - after me, Alice is the nicest, and Amos… has a snake! So we’re super well suited.” Doe wrapped an arm around Alice’s shoulders. “Reminder. It’s my BIRTHDAY and I’m like super important so everyone is legally obligated to get drunk - yes you Longbottom - and have a fuckin’ fantastic time.”

“you don’t think you’re a bit biased? for the record- you’re the smartest and hottest --” she corrected with a chuckle as she wrapped one arm around the girl’s waist as she kept the other hand entwined with frank’s  - it was ridiculous, she could afford to let it go - they have been dating for weeks and yet any chance she got to hold his hand, she would never refused - they had time to make up for, didn’t they? “doe --” she chuckled, stopping for a second as she looked at the boy again, “she does have a point - you could lose a few buttons” she murmured, smile at her lips nothing but PLAYFUL -- “oh poor little atlas, amos however did you transfigure him? i thought he’d be hopping away for his life - really thought we’d have another lost toad crisis --”
