slideshow of finalish images
Final printed postcards.... I got them printed in town, and I found this experience frustrating as I gave up control. As an ode to mass production, I asked them to print their default postcard design on the back, which actually looks oddly shabby-sheek. The final set I chose were of 10 postcards. I noticed after printing that I'd made a couple of mistakes on one of the postcards, choosing the wrong file to put text on, and positioning it not where intended. I didn't notice this on the computer, probably due to a combination of poor eyesight, fatigue, and staring at a computer screen for too long. I didn't make a proof print before printing professionally, because I didn't want to pay for the extra printing costs, but I will make sure to proof print the final images in the future if I make more photoshop work, so it is easier to notice anything I don't like. As I found handing over control to the printing shop so frustrating, the long wait in the unknown, coming back several times ect I think I may go back to traditional work. I enjoyed working in the print room last term, so I might combine etching prints, screen prints, and painting into my work.

Now these are those black and white images overlaid onto these, using the luminosity layer setting in photoshop. I thought these looked great on some, mostly the more simple images, but didn’t work well on the images with a complicated composition. I want consistency, so I decide I’ll go back to using the font I made from my handwriting.

I want to add obvious captions to these images, but how should I go about it? This book, about artists who have used fax machines in their work, contains some great typography. There's a lot more text in these images than I think should be on mine. These images are interesting, because at first glance you see the shapes the words are making, rather than reading the text. I think i prefer the images with a single typeface rather than many different styles mashed together. Although the images in this book have been digitally printed, the images have a grungy hand made touch, reminding me of typewriters and old technology. It could be because most of the images in this book are monotone, or it could be that they have actually used old technology to purposely degrade the quality of the image, in order to give it a different feel.

It is hard to remember which words mutate in Cornish, when forming sentences, but luckily there is a mutation table, in the dictionary of which I have copy of...
Alice Wellinger
“Alice Wellinger is an Austrian based artist | illustrator. Beneath her editorial work she develops her personal art, which is surreal, ironic, dealing with the troubles of daily life and childhood memories.“
I came across this artist on the internet and I love some of the images. They are imaginative, and almost remind me of Alice in Wonderland. The shapes used in these images are very interesting because they have connotations with some of the aesthetics you would find in glitch art and Vaporwave themed photoshop edits. The square/rectangular shapes taken out of images remind me of a pixelated effect you can get with digital images. Another picture looks like a 3-d effect which is widely used.

Trying to work out how to say the things I want in Cornish... This is the harder part since in Cornish there are so many word mutations which means you cant just look up every word in the dictionary
I picked out the artists from this book, mostly because at first glance I love the colours in the work, and how they are used.
I especially love the colours in Ryan Heshka’s work, which are so bright and vibrant. He’s kept some simplicity to his work, allowing large areas of a single colour.
Nick White has also used some brilliantly vibrant colours, but has also made pictures on different surfaces, and brought them together in his work. In the future, if I continue to make small things traditionally, and bring them into photoshop, I could think about the wider range of materials I could use, such as drawing on newspaper or fluted card, even adding photos.
Sienna Hong creates beautiful minimalist narratives, where in contrast Francisco Martins creates very complicated imagery. I can see the difference in feeling between these two. Martins’ work feels very much like a perfectly fake happy fairytale, where Hong’s work is deeply melancholic. I don’t think this is just down to one being more minimal and the other not. I think symbolism is also involved. If I want my own work to have meaning, I should consider what symbols I use in the future. .

Postcards and postcrossing
Postcrossing is an online project, in which you get given an address to send a postcard to, and in return, someone else sends you one. With the Internet connecting people around the world, this takes things a step further by connecting random strangers with physical postcards, which feels a lot more personal.
I've collected many postcards and sent many this way. Is this away of me personally reaching to the massive outside world, which is so different from where I am, that I have yet to explore? Maybe, but this could be a way for my art to reach the outside world. The Internet is great, because you can share your work with anyone, but now with worldwide competition you can't guarantee that anyone will see it. Many people use postcards to advertise their art, events, holiday destinations ect. If I send my postcards out, someone is bound to see them.

I had some printed out because I need to check what the colours will look like printed compared to on my computer. They came out darker than I expected, so I will keep that in mind when finishing the designs.
I think the bottom one is too plain, but the top one is too complicated. Will have to see what happens once there is text on them.
I don’t think I like this one as much as the others, maybe it’s the texture of the canvas disturbing what could be smooth open space, maybe it’s the darkness around the edge, making this look a different shape.
