So what happened here is that Postmates glitched when I was ordering 6 Strange Donuts, and so my order was duplicated. What did I do with all the extra donuts on a night by myself? I cut them all into fourths and ate one section of each variety. So technically I ate three full donuts but sampled twelve. The next day when my roommate came back, he received a delightful selection of day-old donuts.

Dinner with my parents at home - Gulf Breeze, FL
My dad got this fish from Joe Patti’s and cooked it for us. Perfect with tangerine La Croix!
April 22, 2018 - Pensacola, FL
I’m not going to tell you where I got these oysters because 1. they weren’t very good, and 2. I want to talk about how weird the bartender was, and if I post the restaurant name, he might see it in Google Search and feel bad.
He reminded us of Jason from the Good Place. He kept offering me alcohol. He said, really I can just sneak a little in. I told him I don’t drink. He said something like, oh my god, life would be horrible without drinking. Then he told us this crazy story about how he drove across the country in 25 hours straight and his car burned up, and this was all because he missed his flight or something. Then he asked me again if I was sure I didn’t want him to just put a tiny bit of booze in my drink. I hope we get to see him again someday.
Oh, and the problem with the oysters was that they were warm. You don’t want that.

Katalina’s Cafe in Columbus, Ohio
This place was very tiny, with a counter to order at, and artsy graffiti drawn in pretty colors on every surface. The food was excellent. I had breakfast tacos. Bob got eggs that were cooked into sourdough toast. They had great coffee too. In a corner near our table, someone had written “jeffree star”.

Wow, this was the best Sunday night Postmates sushi.
The salmon roe is my very favorite. The eel is great, and I’ve grown to like that sauce they put on it. You can’t go wrong with spicy tuna. And rainbow rolls are magic.
When I was a kid, my dad would take us out for sushi. He’d say, get whatever you want, and we would. We would order so much, they’d put it on a big wooden boat and we’d all eat too much. Once when my parents were out of town, my dad left me his credit card and said I could take my sister and a few friends out to dinner. I took my sister Stacey, my friend Rhi, and her girlfriend Amanda out for sushi. We got a big boat. Get whatever you want, I told them proudly.

I miss days like this. Since the pandemic started, I’ve had new appreciation for my food journal. It seemed like a boring topic back then, but now it reminds me of this quote:
"It’s those things lurking at the background of attention, things that we took for granted at the time, which now evoke the past most powerfully."
That is from Ghosts of My Life: Writings on Depression, Hauntology, and Lost Futures by Mark Fisher, which was honestly a really challenging book to read. Also he committed suicide so I guess it was even more challenging to write it. I didn’t mean for that to come out as a joke.
So yeah, this was taken at Mokabe’s, which is hands down my favorite coffeehouse and one of my most comforting places to hang out. I got a blueberry muffin and an iced coffee with almond milk. That Jughead graphic novel was pretty good.

While on a road trip, Bob and I kept passing these weird signs featuring a really big candle. They pointed to a rest stop. We had to use the bathroom anyway, so we decided to check it out.
In front, as promised, was a giant candle. We walked inside the building and found it packed wall-to wall with regular sized candles. A separate wall toward the back was covered with framed photos of beauty pageant winners. They smiled hugely, immortalized with their curled blonde hair, teased and sprayed so it had a presence of its own.
Back in a corner was a counter where somebody sold a bunch of different kinds of pie. I got a slice of custard pie and a cup of coffee. Bob tried a bite of my pie and didn’t like it. But I liked it just fine. A country music song played through the speakers, about being a good husband.
I ate this burrito by myself at Lulu’s Local Eatery on Saturday, June 25, 2016.
This is the first meal Bob and I had when we got to Pensacola on Sunday, June 9, 2019. It is a poke bowl from Casino Beach Grille. Bob got the surf and turf. Pretty much anywhere you sit in this place gives you a great beach view. Their menu is a good combo of fancy food and bar food.
This was Monday, October 15, 2018 in Indianapolis. Bazbeaux Pizza. Bob and I stopped here on the way home, then it ended up taking a really long time. Good pizza though. My pizzas always look so strange because I order them without cheese. This one had crab meat, shrimp, black olives, and spinach. What a world!
Saturday, January 13, 2019 I got this at Corner 17 in the Loop. I woke up in a weird mood, cried a bunch for no reason, wore a beret and was reading a book that I hate.
Monday, October 23, 2017 - Brad and I had lunch at Lulu’s Local Eatery. We used to both be off on Mondays so we’d go out to lunch often. Mel came out and brought us an extra treat.
This was Sunday, May 10, 2015. I was at the house in Gulf Breeze with Melinda, Rhi, Stacey, Myranda, Suzanne, and Jacob. We got shrimp and the rest of these treats from Joe Patti’s. If you have not been to Joe Patti’s, go and get a pound of peel and eat shrimp to take home. And also get their tuna salad. And buy fruit from the stand that’s in the parking lot.
February 24, 2019 - breakfast burrito at a place in Columbus, Ohio. I think this was Portia’s Cafe. We sat at the bar. Then we went to Melted Music festival and saw Deerhoof. And then we went to a cool arcade in a mall.
April 4, 2017 - I was hanging by myself on the boardwalk. This was my first time back in Pensacola after getting sober and being single and all that. I drank a club soda with lime and felt like I was resetting.
Saturday, October 13, 2018 - this place is Ramsi’s Cafe on the World, located in Louisville. It has fun food and it’s open late. It’s a nice place to hang.
