Individuation is a Jungian concept analogous to an Alchemist’s Magnum-Opus. It is basically the process of Unearthing your true-self and to shed away your outward persona. In alchemy the nigredo process is essentially soul death, or the death of the persona. In this the material/ego is broken down and putrefaction sets in. Thus what remains is the person’s shadow. However the shadow reflects the sexual archetypes (anima is the feminine to a male, animus is a masculine to a female) in the albedo stages as a grand purifier. It shows the spiritual alchemist an aspect well hidden. Then the citrinitas stage is the coming of the sun, or dawn. It is the illumination of the coming “self” which the persona or the lunar light doesn’t need to shine again. In Jungian psychology it is represented as a wise old man or woman and will show you to the self. Then the rubedo (reddening) stage is when the person fuses the ego with the true-self and becomes what they truly are, thus they found their inner philosophers stone. Thus a magnum-opus from within is attainable.
