Meet Your Meat

This is my second project during my final year of my course in 2012 - my final graduate project which merged two of my passions together: animal welfare and Interior Architecture. Below is a brief Synopsis.

This research project aims to look at the social tensions in factory farming by bringing the consumer back into contact with the farming and manufacturing process through an urban “eating machine”. Here; the presently distinct systems of animal consumption and processing are brought together through an urban farmers market, installation, butcher, restaurant and integrated cooking workshop.

Situated within the South Wharf cargo sheds; the site shares an intimate connection to the surrounding precincts from an animal consumption standpoint. Focusing on the first three stages; the resulting proposition aims to break the disconnection between animal and manufactured product by eliciting embodied empathy with the animal to facilitate a deeper appreciation for the meat we consume and encourage informed consumer choice.

The Bach Flower Laboratory + Garden

Brief synopsis of the first of two graduate projects:

The Bach flower laboratory and garden functions as an interior pavilion, haptically, phenomenologically and programmatically facilitating an escape from the sensory bombardment of Chadstone Shopping Centre.

Traditionally shopping centers pulverize the shopper with sensory and psychological information; however not all users are receptive to this bombardment. Thus the design is targeted at users of Chadstone who are experiencing psychological discomfort to this bombardment. The design fuses artificial and natural elements of nature and place science principals into a form that encompasses a hybrid garden and laboratory space where users may access consultation facilities and hand pick ingredients for naturopathic treatments addressing their unique psychological state. The design also offers users a sensory escape through its geometry via access to inhabitable spaces of solitude within the structure.

Wrapping up my job as an assistant tutor...

Today we wrapped up the crits for the Monash interior architecture first years. Some really great outcomes and I felt fortunate to be a part of the process as an assistant tutor.This semester the students conceptually explored ‘in-habitation’ through a series of design exercises and a final group installation.

Some of the installations are shown below - these and the rest can be seen this Thursday at the MADA exhibition @ 6pm (Monash University Caulfield).

Seeing these project outcomes made me miss the act of physically making & and has inspired me to perhaps make an installation of my own in the near future. Just need to think about what I want to create now that I no longer have a prescribed brief for my creative outlets…

This is the fun part of design- watching the ideas unfold into an exciting realization - whether its through your own work or helping another develop theirs.
