Fave New Thing-The Green Polka Dot Box

I can’t tell you about the Green Polka Dot Box until I tell you how I found out about it. As you may know, I am into food. Generally speaking, I love to read about it, love to talk about it, love to cook it, love to eat it. I also am really into researching my food. I think it’s hugely important what we put into our bodies. I think that food could be a game changer in the world of preventative medicine. I think the government subsidizes all the wrong things within agriculture. Blah blah blah. You see where I’m going with this.

So, I’ve read a whole lot of books about food. This all started when I went from a meat and potatoes girl to a strict vegan about 3 years ago. That was all thanks to “The China Study.” At the time I had no idea how to be a vegan. I didn’t know a single other vegan, and I only knew a couple of vegetarians. So I bought every book I could find and I read constantly. The information I consumed was life changing. The book I am reading now is called “Voices of the Food Revolution” by John and Ocean Robbins. It’s a collection of interviews with the people who are fronting this shift in our diet, focusing on all the issues GMOs are causing. I highly recommend it. You can read more about it here:

Anyway, since I made this shift to being a veggie, I also made a shift to buying almost everything organic. And after this latest read, I am trying to add non-GMO to my must-buy list. That stuff can be a little hard to find, and it definitely has a heftier price tag. One of the suggestions that “Voices” offered was to buy your groceries from The Green Polka Dot Box. It’s much easier on your wallet than making Whole Foods your second home. They don’t have produce, but they have almost everything you could possible need for your pantry, some frozen, and some refrigerated foods. The prices are unbeatable. The variety is pretty impressive. My food was delivered in just a few days, and I got to do it all from the comfort of my own couch! My only complaint is that they categorize all the items as vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, non-GMO, etc. They do this so you can search for food based on your dietary restrictions which is great. However, I did notice that they had a few things labeled as vegan, that really weren’t. They were vegetarian, but they had gelatin or some such thing on the list of ingredients. So, if you are picky about that, check the labels as you would at the store.

Also, I did order a carton of almond milk, which due to our weather here in good old MN, froze before I brought it inside, and therefore was ruined. So definitely keep the weather in mind if you wont be home to accept the delivery!

That's A Wrap

I've been preparing for the holidays for months. Almost all year in fact. We started putting our holiday concert series together in March. I spent the spring booking musicians and music venues in between changing diapers and feeding my newborn baby girl, Grace.

After that, I worked on our kickstarter campaign, lining up corporate sponsors and making the album.

Once all of that was done it was time to SELL, SELL, SELL. If you're going to play 7 theaters in 30 days all within 90 miles of each other, you better hope that people show up. A LOT of people!

Were there days I thought I was in over my head? Um, yeah! Were there days I couldn't have been more thrilled to see how things were coming together? Definitely. In the end though, it's just a waiting game. How many records will you sell? How many people will show up to see the show? And more importantly, are they going to like this thing you've dedicated 9 months of your life to?

Well, they did!

It's all over now. I can't believe how fast it went. The chaos of the holidays is enough on it's own, but playing this concert series on top of all of that just made it fly by. The reception was even better than we could have hoped for. People showed up! A LOT of people! All the venues loved the show, and we sold TONS of CDs. During our last performance on 12/29 at the Main Street Stage in Anoka, part of me was so excited to be wrapping it up, knowing that we had made it through unscathed and free from embarrassment, and also looking forward to a much needed break for the next several weeks. Still though, we put together this amazing album, (something I couldn't be more proud of) but the season is short lived. We only got to play those songs 7 times to a live audience. So, I found myself sad that it was all over, and already looking forward to doing it again next year.

The collaborative effort was pretty huge for this whole thing. Kevin Bowe (as per usual) produced the record. Hopefully you have a copy and have been able to fully enjoy it! We had rotating musical guests at every show including: Peter Anderson, Justin Rieken (my new and super fab bass player), Kevin Bowe, Tommy Barbarella, Doug Rohde, Charlie Peterson, Lisi Wright, Andy Dee and Steve Kung. All that talent on one stage was really thrilling.

Every night something different was brought to the table. It was hard not to be distracted. I had to keep reminding myself to pay attention to what I was supposed to be doing and not the super cool solo that was taking place 3 feet away.

We also shared the stage with 5 different choirs from around the area. Almost 150 children ages 8-18 were included in these shows. Each group brought a different energy to the stage. They were so excited to have the opportunity. The band couldn't have been happier to have them. We closed the series with The MN Boychoir on our last 3 shows this past weekend. The power that comes from those kids is pretty amazing. It's hard for me not to get emotional when the choir kicks in.

The fans were incredible. On many occasions there was dancing in the aisles. Nothing makes me happier than people getting up to dance at a theater show.

I heard nothing but kind words from people. They especially enjoyed the slideshows we had put together with childhood photos of some of the band members, accompanied by stories of Christmas past.

Last, but most definitely not least...we have to thank our sponsors. We couldn't have done this without you! I am honored that you believed in us enough to back this project! Thank you!

Then there are our Kickstarter donors. You guys are truly fantastic! Every dollar that was donated went towards putting this album and concert series together. It was so great to have that kind of financial support on our first year out of the gate. THANK YOU ALL!

I couldn't be happier with how everything came together. Even before the last show wrapped, I started plotting for next year. There are so many things I want to do! Venues I want to play! It's going to be bigger and better than ever!

Christmas In September

The end of summer has just arrived. We’ve had our first couple of fall weather days. Christmas is still three months away....and yet, I’ve been getting ready for it since May! It feels a little weird, I must admit. This must be what Santa feels like.

Anyway, the reason I’ve been spending so much time prepping is this: the band and I have put together a holiday concert series - Alison Scott’s A Soulful Christmas. Seven shows all over the metro area, reaching as far as Rochester. We have a 6 piece band with rotating musical guests (Tommy Barbarella, Charlie Peterson, Doug Rohde, Steve Kung, Jillian Rae and Lisi Wright). We’ve got lots of new material - some traditional, some original, and a few of our favorite all-year-round songs.

It’s not just a concert series though. You guys have been on us to put out a holiday album for a few years now, and we think it’s time to give the people what they want! Plus, Christmas is my favorite holiday. Give me an apron, some flour and sugar, and I’ll be baking for weeks, only coming up for air to listen to my favorite Christmas tunes and buy way too many stocking stuffers. (Yes, I really do have a problem with the stocking stuffers!) We’re putting the final touches on the tracks now. Just a few more vocals and a special appearance by the MN Boychoir and Kevin can tie it all up with bow.

Just last week I had the album cover photo shoot with my friend George Roedler. The photos turned out great! We did the shoot in my parent’s house. That’s where I wrote all of my first songs. In fact, it’s where I wrote most of my first album, Wish On The Moon. So, it was fun to come full circle and get back there for my new album. Especially since the holidays are all about family, it seems to mean more.

There is a greater purpose to this whole extravaganza. I grew up in the Wayzata Public School System. Wayzata is a district known for having really great music programs. I was truly lucky to have so many opportunities to discover my musical self while I was there. I’m worried that my daughter won’t get that same chance. Funding for music and the arts continues to be cut. We could be on the verge of losing the arts in our schools all together. THIS CAN’T HAPPEN. There is NO WAY that I’d be a professional musician today if I hadn’t been exposed to music since I was 5 years old. It’s too important. So, I’m going to do everything I can to keep these programs around.

My mission is to raise awareness, and if I’m lucky, even some funding for them. We’ve chosen a different local choir to team up with us for each of our holiday shows. We’ll be working with the MN Boychoir, The Honors Choirs of SE Minnesota, and three different public school districts: Zumbrota-Mazeppa, North High School in Maplewood and Lakeville South High School. Hopefully working with professional musicians will show these kids that their goals are attainable. If they put in the time and the effort, they can have successful careers in music as well.

I won! I won!

So, much to my surprise, Joe Brandmeier (director extraordinaire) sent me an email a couple of weeks ago that we had won a silver Telly award for our “Smash & Grab” video. Joe and his crew did an amazing job making this video for us, and while I always thought it was the coolest video around, we have never had any formal recognition for it’s awesomeness. Until now. Something spurred him to submit it, and WE WON!

Now, I’m embarrassed to admit that I had never heard of the Telly awards. So, I had to look them up. Turns out they honor the very best in film and video production. They cover online videos, programs and commercials. Also local, regional, and cable tv commercials, programs and segments. That’s A LOT! There were over 13,000 entries and we received the highest honor which is a Silver Telly.

Babies and Prophets

Well, I am a total slacker. I haven't written in two months! I promise to do better next time. Lots of cool stuff is happening across the board. I am 8 days away from my due date, and SOOO ready for this baby to come out. We've spent so long preparing and checking things off this endless to do list to get ready. Now we're done, and I don't know what to do with myself except sit on my butt waiting for her arrival. Time seems to have slowed down a bit. Still, I can't wait to meet her, to start a new chapter! The band has some exciting plans too, so stay tuned!

While I'm busy doing the baby thing, the rest of the boys are still out there bringing the music to the people. Kevin, Peter, and Steve (AKA Kevin Bowe & the Okemah Prophets) are kicking off their tour tonight at The Amsterdam in St. Paul only to take it all the way to the east coast and back. So, my biz partner/guitarist/manager/producer/self-proclaimed janitor

(that would be Mr. Kevin Bowe) put out an album in June as you may recall. It's pretty damn awesome if you ask me. Natchez Trace has been written up by Rolling Stone, No Depression, endless blogs, and is getting airplay all over this country and Europe. So, although he hasn't been doing many gigs as a frontman since I stole him to play in my band, he is now turning into a gigging machine! Quite timely considering my upcoming baby break. With an east coast tour right around the corner, he and the boys are getting prepped and playing all over town. His band is, well, my band. Peter Anderson on drums and Steve Price on bass round out the trio. I have to admit it's cool and simultaneously very weird for me to be watching them from the audience. I'm adjusting. Plus, they bring me up every now and then to shake a tambourine or my tail feather. Ok, maybe not my tail feather. But I've got the tambo thing down. Alison Scott & Friends 3rd Annual Holiday Show (12/18/12)

Hey All! The big holiday show is fast approaching and I can’t believe it’s only 6 days away. For the past couple of years we’ve tried to rally a bunch of our friends for our holiday show; this year is no different. We only go all out like this once a year, so here is the deal... The Laurels String Quartet is the “it” string quartet in town if you ask me (and many others). I first got the chance to work with them through the Elton John Tribute I played last Valentine’s Day. I found them beyond awesome, asked them to play on “Madman Across the Water” on my record, and then they joined us for my CD Release in June. Whenever we have them with us, I feel legit. Everything just seems so fancy when strings are involved and I love it. My cousin Adam Conrad has really started making a name for himself in this town as a composer. Originally from California, he moved here to go to McNally Smith College of Music. A move I completely (and unjustifiably) take credit for. We’ve asked him to arrange something for the strings for this show. Steve Kung, god of trumpet, may be familiar to many of you by now; we like to snatch him up whenever possible. He is featured on Chinese Whispers on the song “The Trains.” He’ll be sitting in on that and many others next Tuesday night. Last, but not least, my friends The Mirabelles will be joining us. I’ve known this duo for 10 years. I met Brandy Runyan, a fellow voice major, right when I started college. She was one of the first people to encourage me to start writing my own songs. Her partner in crime, Michael Oachs, I met soon after and I was blown away by his guitar skills. The two of them will perform one original song, and sit in on many of our other songs throughout the set. So basically, it’s going to rock your socks off. Babies, Babies

It's weird how much my life has changed in the past few months. Although, in some ways it still seems like it hasn't changed at all. I'm approaching 20 weeks pregnant which is very exciting. We just found out we are having a girl! Woohoo! I'm not going to lie, it's what we were hoping for. I've been lucky to have it fairly easy so far. I'm very grateful for that. So now, I'm flitting back and forth between moments of "oh....my....god...." and moments of "I got this."

In some ways, everything is different now. I spend my free time registering for what seems to be a never ending list of baby needs. Researching the best car seat or stroller, shopping for little girly things, and some not-so-girly things (you have to have balance!), figuring out daycare, and deciding if our current car is adequate, etc. It never ends. At the same time, everything still seems the same. There is this baby in my belly, but it seems so hypothetical right now. It definitely sank in a little more at the ultrasound. She looks like a real person! That's just weird. But still, she's living in there, and I'm out here. I still work just as much. Which leads to me hoping that I'll be able to find the right work/life balance after she comes. I'm hugely envious of the people who have that one figured out. So, I'll keep working on it. People seem to assume that I'm giving up music. WHAT!?! Women these days are doing it all, including having a career. I've spent 7 years building mine and I'm not ready to throw in the towel. I do definitely see the appeal of being a stay-at-home mom. I think it's beyond admirable for those who do it, and I'm sure at some point in my life I'll experience that. Still, for now, I want both things. I'm lucky to have a great husband who will help make that happen. I also don't think my parents will be devastated to have to babysit every once in a while, so I've got it pretty good. Without these things, my situation would be completely different.

I guess what I'm trying to say is this. I'm going to take a few months off in the spring to enjoy my new little person. But then, I'll be back. We've got another record to put out. One I'm super excited about. It's going to rock your socks off. I won't be able to spend every waking moment with my child. I know I'll always be sad to leave her, but I know she'll be taken care of. If she really needs me, I'll be there in a second. But I think it's important for me to continue my musical journey. At least for a while! So....working moms, especially the ones who worked right away, please send me your tips! I can use them!

My new single "Perseus" is finally available! You can get it on itunes or CD Baby.

I've had people asking us to release this song for a long time, so I didn't want to wait until we had a whole new record out. We wanted to get it to you asap. So, it will only be available for digital download, it will not be available in physical form.

Here's the story behind the song:

My family has a place we've been going to on the North Shore, right past Two Harbors, for as long as I can remember. We vacation there every summer, and if I'm lucky I can make it up in the fall too. My dad has always been really in to star gazing. He has some pretty impressive telescopes/binoculars, so anytime there is an eclipse or a visible planet, we're parked out on the rocks or the beach looking at it. His favorite thing is getting the whole family to take our vacation during the Perseid Meteor Shower. Especially when it lines up with a new moon. The family will be out every night around midnight, all bundled up with pillows and blankets, laying on the ground by the river hoping to catch a shooting star. Sometimes we're lucky to see one, other times we'll see 10. It's a tradition I've appreciated more and more as I've grown up.

I've wanted to write a song about the shower for years, and I finally did. I recorded this track solo in the brand new studios at IPR downtown. We did a couple of takes, and picked our favorite one. So, I suppose this is actually a live in studio recording. I hope you guys enjoy it. You can download the song here:

Here's a look at The Paramount Theater in Austin, MN. We had a really wonderful time there last night. It was our last grant show of 2012. We have 3 more in 2013. Really great fans! Sold tons of cds. I'm still selling them off the website. Gotta love that!

We had the company of this little pooch too. His name was "Riley the Sound Check Dog." So cute. He may have piddled on the curtain when we got there, but what can you do!?! We forgave him.

The Paramount looks a lot like the Suburban World theater. It used to be a night club, everything had been painted black. Luckily nobody ever tore anything down so they were able to restore it. It has twinkly lights built into the ceiling and everything. Really amazing.

Can't wait to get back there. Thanks to the city of Austin for having us!

Here are some shots from our recent shows at Bemidji State and St. Scholastica. The band has really mastered the road trip lately! It's time to buy a trailer. I may as well start sleeping at the UHaul place. I'm there every other day! And yes, this chick does drive a suburban with a trailer on the back. You should see them coddle me, but I can handle myself! :) And I feel like a little school kid again, packing my lunches in my mini cooler with my brother's name on it. Yes, the one my mother wrote when he was 8 years old. I must have stolen it by accident. Or was it!?! Thanks Sam!

We've got another out-of-towner in Austin, MN tomorrow night (a grant show at The Paramount Theater) and then it's off to Sioux Falls, SD on Saturday to play Old Skoolz. After this week we are all done with grant shows until after the 1st of the year. Still plenty on the books to keep us busy though.

Plus, my hubby is running his first full marathon on Sunday (Twin Cities). I have to come home in time to carry his sorry butt home and feed him some carbs.

Well, I'm off. Time to hit the maternity stores. The time has come. The belly won't fit in my jeans anymore. I can't decide if I'm more sad or happy. Talk soon!

Hey Guys! Here is an overview in photos of our first grant show in New York Mills! We were a little worried we wouldn’t have a great crowd since they had a home football game the same night. Apparently that is the thing to do in NYM, so it meant big competition! Fortunately we had an amazing audience. It was a really cool venue and we can’t wait to get back there. Thanks to Jamie (the guy in charge) for being so hospitable, and to our workshop attendees for coming to hang out with us pre-show! Next grant stop-The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth this Friday night, 9/28. Wish us luck!

Hey Music Lovers- So, I do have some exciting stuff going on this week! The band and I were lucky enough to receive a grant from the State of MN as part of the Arts Tour MN. This is funding a 7-city tour all over the state, mostly in smaller town/cities and mostly places we’ve never played before. We’re kicking off this tour this weekend in New York Mills! I have to admit, I’m still a little shocked that we were chosen to be a part of this. In some weird way I feel legitimized as an artist. If the state is willing to back me, that’s pretty damn awesome! We’ll be tracking the tour and adding photos/videos as we go so you can see what it’s like on the road. I’ve heard that some of these venues are truly stunning, so it’s pretty amazing we get to play in all of them. Also, as a part of each show Kevin and I will be conducting a workshop on either “The Art of Songwriting” or “Grass Roots Music Business and Promotion.” Usually these will take place the day of the show, just a couple hours before we take the stage. So, I'm new...please follow.

I'm new to this whole Tumblr thing. I'm never on the cutting edge of technology, and I'm ok with that. Still, a couple friends told me that Tumblr is a pretty sweet blog site, so here I am. If you don't know too much about me, I'm a musician, based out of Minneapolis. I've got a hubby, two dogs, a house, a music career, a teaching career, and a general love of food, movies, environmentalism, vegans, road trips and all things old school. So there you have it.
