Where the pressure resides
I am feeling pressure. I am feeling pressure to be healthy, and “all better.” Before I would have thought the pressure was being put on me from outside sources. Outside sources being things such as work, or people in my life. Now, I realize it is me putting on the pressure. I need to let go of the heady expectations I am putting on myself.
Prior to this journey I would think that work would be upset, frustrated, irritated, and disappointed in me for not being able to be back at work the day after break. The day I thought I would be back. I also would have thought that I needed to prove to them that I am really still sick. I wouldn’t want them to think that I was milking my situation, or being a “baby.” I would have felt like society would expect me to be strong, push through, make it happen, and if I didn’t or could that would mean that I was weak. That is so much pressure! I now recognize that I have succumb to my own demise. I have all these expectations of what I should do and how I should be because I think that these are the things that other people want from me, but I actually do not know that to be true. I just have made that my truth.
I have realized, and am still catching myself to change the pattern, that I just need to be the best version of myself that I can be and that is enough. Therefore, if I am sick, I am sick and there does not need to be a qualifier or guilt to go along with that to make it ok. It simply is just ok. My heart may want something different but that is a longing in my heart. I need to acknowledge those feelings, and then realize my heart wants the best for me, but what is best for me is to take care of myself.
Therefore, this mornings pressure to get better (so I don’t miss work tomorrow) is coming from a desire to be a good team member at my job, a want to feel healthy, and a desire to please. Two of these reasons come from a place of compassion and are inherently good, but the desire to please needs to left to the side. Now, I need to realize: “I am a good team member, and going to work when I cannot perform will only cause problems. Additionally, maybe prolong the recovery of my throat if I am using it all day when I don’t yet have that capacity.” And, “I will be healthy, but I need to give my body the time it needs to heal in the proper way. Also, my body is like no one else’s. Therefore there are not any expectations or rules to govern a timeline. I am getting better, and it is sweet that I care for myself and want to see my body healthy and strong again. It will happen.”
It is interesting that I have been able to change my perspective so quickly. I wonder what other areas in my life I will find that the pressure I feel is something I have conceived as an external pressure, when in fact it comes from with in. What has your mind developed to be an internalized pressure that stems from the external?
