*Important Note: Some of these brands may or may not be sold in other countries that require animal testing by law in order for the products to be sold, but I don’t have the time to research animal testing laws outside the US as well as what brands sell in those countries. So I’m leaving this one up to you.
Okay, this has been in my drafts for at least 3 months now. Time to roll it out! Keep in mind, these are videos/bloggers that helped me specifically and there may be some videos/links that aren’t as useful to you. That’s okay! I recommend you get lost in the beauty blogger side of youtube at some point, it’s a lot of fun and you never know what you’ll find!
And on a last note of disclaimer: I don’t follow the personal lives/twitter feed/rumors about anyone in these videos. I don’t know if someone is problematic or not, I am simply recommending the video.

how did you get your hair bow for tsuyu so... perfect? did you just use hair styling products or is it held in place somehow? I plan on cosplaying her too so I'm really curious!! <3
Thank you so much! It’s a combination of fabric glue, got 2 b hairspray, a hair blowdryer, and heat resistant hair wefts (I personally like to use Arda Wigs the most.) And it’s attached to the wig via hair tie. I didn’t take very many photos of the process, so I’ll try to explain it as best I can!

How to make wings without a harness
Most of the time wings that are a bit heavy needs the support of straps that goes around the shoulders and under the chest to stay up against your back.
Harnesses works very good but if the dress etc have bare shoulders however the straps are going to show.
This is how I normally do wings in a way to avoid having a harness for those character designs. First of all this method will not work if the top/dress is loose fitted. The wings will require some support to hold them in place on your back. I find that corsets are the best for this especially if the wings are a bit heavy but I have also used it in tops without boning.
Start of making your wings seperated on two bars. Make sure the bars are made out of a stiff material since they are going to support the weight of the wings. If they end up being too weak and bend the wings will slope and gap away from your back.
For my angel wings in felt I used 3 mm thick aluminum bars to hold up my, a bit more heavy, wings. I then covered them in worbla and connecting them using some more worbla, This creates a good wing base and makes them stay with a good distance from each other.
In a similar way I attached an other pair of wings made out of worbla to a base, but since these wings are quite light a few layers of worbla was enough to keep them stiff and not bend. Make sure not to make the base too short since you will stick it into your back lining and don’t want it to fall out.
One of the most important steps when doing these kinds of wings is to bend the base a bit. Most backs are not 100% flat so put the wing base against you back and mark where on the base where a gap between the base and your back starts to show. If the base is made of a thermoplastic you can just heat it up and bend it at the marking into the right angle. Otherwise, like for the base with aluminum, you can saw it of and reattach them again to create the right angle. You can of course make the angling of the base before attaching the wings but I find it easier to do it after. When the base is done you can just stick it in to the top. I find that sticking it into the bra strap also helps the wings stay in place a bit better. I personally love this method since you super easily can take the wings of and back on if you want to sit down or walk in a crowded hallway without worrying about people bumping into you wings.

Here’s a little video of me making some foam into leather for my Raguna cosplay. By no means is this a tutorial, but I hope you all can use this for reference
Painting on Leather Tutorial
Found the right pair of boots for a costume but they’re the wrong color? Need a detail design painted on something leather? Or do you just need to touch up a piece that has gotten scuffed or marked up? Repainting leather is less difficult or expensive then you might think. I like to buy old jackets form the thrift store and recycle the leather for cosplay pieces. This mean I can get a significant amount of usable leather for less than $10, but often it is an ugly color. Sometimes the color leather I need isn’t even available to purchase on the market. To fix this I simply paint the leather with specialty acrylic leather paint.
Acrylic Leather Paint: Where to Get It
Angelus brand is the most wildly know and recommended leather paint. This brand comes in a multitude of colors: primary, secondary, neon, metallic, glitter paint, etc. I usually purchase mine off of Amazon. Prices can range from $2.99- $8.00 for a 1 oz bottle. Shop around and don’t pay more then $3 -$5 for a bottle. 1 oz may seem little but I promise that the paint goes a long way. If you have a large surface area to cover 4 oz bottles are also available. For $30-$40 you can get a 12 pack of 1 oz bottles in the basic colors. For $13-$20 you can get a 6 pack of 1 oz bottles in the neon colors. If you have a leather supply shop where you live try contacting them and see if they carry the paint for less. EcoFlo Cova paint is another brand that is available online and through Tandy Leather Shop. It has almost as large a selection of colors as Angelus and the price is similar. The wonderful thing about EcoFlo is that the normal bottle size is slightly larger- 1.5 oz. But 2 oz is the largest size available in most colors. In a pinch regular acrylic paint will work too. But I find that the Angelus brand seems to adhere better. Be sure to seal it or it will start to scrape off under ware and tear. I do not recommend using craft store acrylic paint to repaint shoes, it does not hold up well under stress.
How to Use Leather Paint: Tips and Tricks
Leather paint works the same way as regular acrylic paint. You can blend them to create custom colors, drying time is comparable, and you can clean your brushes with water.
Make sure the leather is clean. If you are painting on top of a pre-existing color you will want to strip the shiny top layer off with a little bit of acetone (i.e. fingernail polish remover) and/or fine grit sand paper (200 grit or finer). Be careful not to take off to much or you’ll risk pulling the pre-existing coat of paint off and creating blotchy uneven spots on the surface. I highly recommend using a scrap of leather to test out how much acetone/sanding it will take to strip off the top layer before trying it on the piece you are working on.
This type of paint can also be used on vinyl/pleather but not as effectively. It doesn’t adhere as well, requires sanding in the prepping stage and I find it doesn’t hold as well if the item is under a lot of stress (ex. shoes). If you are changing the color from a dark to a light (ex. the boots pictured above) you may need somewhere between 3-6 coats to make sure it is properly covered.
You can apply the paint using a sponge brush or a regular paint brush. A sponge brush leaves fewer streaks and creates a smoother finish but it will soak up and waste quite a bit of your paint. With a regular paint brush you risk streaks but you can control the amount of paint you are using with less wastefulness. The paint will also work well with an airbrush if you have one. If you water the paint down (especially with the EcoFlo brand) you can use it like a stain. If you get paint on an area of the leather that you don’t want it you can pull it off with a little acetone. I usually dab some on with a paint brush and then pull it off with a Q-tip or paper towel. After your final coat is dry you will want to seal the paint with a top coat. I use either polycryclic or EcoFlo. Polycryclic can be purchased at any hardware store. EcoFlo comes in a several different sheens: matte, super sheen, satin sheen etc. It can be purchased at Hobby Lobby, Tandy Leather and many online retailers such as Amazon.

ATTENTION COSPLAYERS:
I would like to make the paint brand “Angelus” known. It is a special paint that is for leather, faux leather, rubber, and similar surfaces.
This is literally the best paint you can buy if you love a pair of shoes, but they aren’t in the right color for your character.
This stuff coats VERY well AND the coats of paint bend with your shoes. This means no cracking!!
In the photos above I took black rain boots and painted them with Angelus Turquoise. As you can see, they don’t look black any more! It’s so good!
I managed to paint two boots with a little one ounce bottle of the paint, and I still have a third of the bottle left over!
The paint dries very fast, so you can put layer on top of layer on top of layer without it streaking.
You can get the paint on Amazon and it comes in every color!
I just really wanted to make this known!! :D This stuff is amazing!
https://angelusdirect.com/collections/paint
Don’t buy Angelus pain’t on Amazon, it’s like $6.99 an ounce. Buy it direct from their online store the poster above linked, the single ounce bottles are $2.95 there. Also, a little goes a long way, unless you have something HUGE to paint, you can probably do it with a small bottle. I barely dented the one I got doing all the black on this;
Things I wish I had known last year.
The Juliet Strap. Bridals best kept secret.
You’ll find them on most strapless bridal gowns, if the style allows for it, but you wont see much mention of them online.
I haven’t been able to find any tutorials, no explanation, just the occasional reference on a bridal site. Sometimes they’re wrongly called a waist stay, other times I’ve seen them called an elastic bustier, but Juliet strap is what we call them, and its less confusing. The manufacturers who make our dresses for us (I work with a bridal designer) have never been confused when we asked for a Juliet strap in a dress.
Its a wide strap of elastic thats sewn into the side seams and has a closure like a bra band. I’ve seen them up to about 8 inches wide, the one in the picture is about 3.
What does a Juliet strap do? It holds the front of the dress to you! If its wide enough, it will also act as a bit of a corset.
The strap helps hold the front up, and against your body. And keeps the movement of the front to a minimum. If you’re worried about a dress falling down, or not giving enough support in the front, its an easy alteration that will improve the fit. however, It works best with boning.
It would be the perfect addition to a bunny suit, or strapless dresses like Neo Queen serenity.
so THAT’S how wonder woman doesn’t fall out
OH MY GOD THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING .
SHINY, CELLOPHANE/VINYL/PLASTIC/IDK WIGS. THE HOW, WHAT, WHERE AND THE WHY.
You may have seen these somewhere recently on the internet. Be it here, twitter or facebook, adding cellophane or similiar to wigs has become a great trend to add that extra iridescent glow to the wig that needs it.
Now, not every wig requires this. But some characters, such as the ones on Land of the Lustrous (where these tutorials come from) may have hair that benefit from this look.
Tutorials roved hard to find but I’m confident that these cover most of the basics. And the resources are just ideas of what you could use not what you have to use.
Enjoy and be shiny!
