Since the late 1930s, men of Chinatown have been playing nine-man, their own intense variation of volleyball, which is featured in the forthcoming film, “9-Man.”

In the Amazon rain forest,  there is a tournament that is equal parts soccer and beauty pageant. It is one of the largest and most unusual amateur soccer competitions in the world, and perhaps the only one with a reality show.

 “In Brazil, every business promotion has football, beautiful women and beer,” Sampaio said. “If you don’t have these, it will not be successful.”

This spring on a reporting trip to Dakar, Liz Flock and I discovered that jellies - the clear plastic shoes we wore as little kids, now re-popularized for the masses by Juju, via American Apparel - are actually sporty shoes to the Senegalese.

After purchasing two dollar pairs of our own, men would stop Liz on the street and asked her if she played soccer. And it was the popular footwear of choice on Muscle Beach.
