13-year-old Michael Jackson’s 2nd studio album was released on 4 August 1972.
The album’s titular single was used for the film of the same name (and a sequel to Willard). The film was released in June and the single was released in July. “Ben” topped the US Billboard chart (for a week) and was nominated for an Academy Award.
The album sold more than 5 million copies and peaked at #5 in the US.
