She heard the footsteps behind her in the dungeon corridor, steeling her expression. Dread ran up her spine and she took in a deep breath. Merlin, she’d just wanted some hot chocolate and sweets from the kitchens. She thought she might break something if she actually had to talk to someone.
“If you want to walk away and go back to your common rooms, I’d personally much rather avoid doing the paperwork of docking points or detention.” she drawled, mentally crossing her fingers they would take the bait and escape so she could make it to the kitchens alone. It’s not like they had to know it wasn’t actually her night to patrol.
Nobody had to know how often Andromeda had pulled the prefect card to cover up her after hours wanderings. She was a Black. Abuse of power came with the territory. She might be struggle to pick up the rest of her family’s beliefs, but damn if she wouldn’t find at least one she could use.
With the chaos going on in the castle, Lily knew that it was frowned upon for her to be wandering the castle this late at night. She was a prefect after all. She needed to set an example for the other students. She couldn’t sleep and although, it wasn’t anything unusual, the nightmares had gotten to her this particular evening. The common room was much too crowded. It wasn’t much of a surprise that her feet carried her to the astronomy tower. She did a lot of her thinking here while looking out at the stars.
It was late and there was a chill to the air, but it was calming. Green eyes looked up at the stars and she sighed in contentment. That contentment was drawn short when Lily heard footsteps behind her. Pulling her robes around her frame, she gripped her wand in her hand. Out of habit and best practice. “It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” She didn’t turn around to see whom it was that had accompanied her; which was probably against her best judgement. Clearing her throat, she turned to face said person, “You probably shouldn’t be up here at this hour. You could get detention.”
“I would suggest we compromise. Either we both end up in detention and both have to do the paperwork for it, or we can both pretend we never saw each other,” Andromeda said with an eyebrow raise. The part of her that was there to avoid her problems was telling her to turn around and go back down the steps. She did not have the interest in being friendly with the Gryffindor, nor the energy to invest in behaving as she should towards a muggleborn.
The part of her that was still a Black and too proud to let someone else drive her away from her plans finally won out and she stepped out onto the tower. Astrology was her favorite part of Divination, even if she found it all to be badly imagined fiction - though she had made it this far keeping up the rude to enjoy her parents so she wasn’t about to admit it. But the one thing she did honestly love was the stars. Maybe it was because of her name, but there was a reason she was part of the astronomy club and a reason muggle astronomy books were hidden under the false bottom of her trunk.
She withdrew her star chart from her pocket along with her quill and spread it as she looked up the stars, hoping the muggleborn would take it as a dismissal but not feeling overly optimistic. Sirius’s housemates had always been irritatingly stubborn.
“No, please, keep talking.” Amycus said, not even bothering to look up from what probably could pass as notes if they weren’t in the language he’d made up with his siblings as children. “I was so terribly interested in what you had to say. It was just so fucking thrilling.”
Emotionally, Andromeda would have loved to collapse into the chair next to him with a huff, an expletive, and perhaps a wordless scream. But holding onto perhaps just two threads enough of self control, she instead sat primly down and simply allowed the horrifying stack of prefect paperwork to thud onto the table.
“I’m sure you can imagine how much more thrilled I am to have to work on this, but I’ll bet you five galleons and a pound of Honeydukes that I can get my half done quicker,” she challenged. As much as the fellow prefect annoyed her, the two had a system and at least she didn’t have to be nice about it.
harry potter challenge: 1/7 characters → andromeda tonks, née black
“andromeda was my favourite cousin. no, andromeda’s not on here either, look. andromeda’s sisters are still here because they made lovely, respectable pure-blood marriages, but andromeda married a muggle-born, ted tonks, so —”
Sitting on a window sill, Marlene gazed out to the lake. The leaves on the trees rustled quietly in the wind and the lake had the tiniest little ripples to it’s otherwise calm surface. How could something so beautiful be so fucking terrifying to her? She could stare at it all day long, as long as she wasn’t more than calf deep in the thing. To be fair, that particular lake was an easy thing to be terrified of, with all the things in there waiting to drag you down.
Marlene shivered.
She needed to get her mind clear. These past few days it had felt like she was in a box, just waiting for it to burst like it seems to be doing in the outside world. She needed a distraction, but with everyone so busy with studying or doing their own things, she wasn’t quite sure where to find one. How could nothing be happening while chaos wreaked havoc all around them? She hadn’t heard of anything particularly juicy yet and she was getting bored. Marlene was used to being the one that people went to when they had a secret they needed to spill, whether she wanted to hear it or not.
But just as she was about to abandon hope and wander to her common room, she heard the unmistakable creak of a floor board behind her. “Please tell me you have something actually interesting to say?”
Andromeda could easily remember feeling comfortable in her common room. It was where her sisters were. Where Lucius was. At 11 years old, she used to lay out on the common room to watch the creatures in the lake swim past the glass. She knew more about the creatures in the lake than almost anyone she knew, fascinated by the ones she saw.
But more and more the common room she had loved felt suffocating. She didn’t want to think of it as an act. But if she were willing to be honest that was exactly what it was, and to be enclosed with that farce by the stone walls and the water of the lake sometimes made it difficult to breathe.
Her plan had been to find herself tea and whatever desserts were leftover from dinner tonight and find her way to windowsill in some tower that would get her as far away from that common room as the castle would allow. It was not to entertain some Gryffindor she didn’t know beyond seeing her hang around her cousin.
“I wasn’t aware that I had any interest in entertaining you, McKinnon.” The cold drawl rolled off her tongue, more out of habit and ingrained instinct than any malice. She knew who she was supposed to like and who she was supposed to avoid, and this Gryffindor was very easy to place in those categories.
